According to the writers, this is a different sub-species of Yautja from the same planet. Most Yautja have a jungle-like biome, but this guy is from the desert. So his body and tools are slightly different. Also, most predators choose to hamper themselves with lower tech to make more of a challenge.

This Predator, as you probably know, is a Subspecies to the other predators seen in the series. Their actual species name being Yautja, which I cannot pronounce. The older films showcases the foresty jungle predators while this one is more arid desert, hence why he’s more tan and lean and uses more “old school” weapons like dart launchers and a shield blade. Less efficient but more ceremonial or traditional. The dog also I believe was adopted specifically for this movie since she’s a similar breed to what would exist at the time, but since they were so good during initial filming they decided to put her in more scenes and she’s great, good girl.

I’m a biology student and we talked a lot about this movie when it came out. The Feral Predator is from a different biome of the Yautja homeworld as stated by the director. It’s essentially a desert predator rather than the subspecies that evolved in the tropical jungle biome. As a result of less cover from their planets’ two suns, this subspecies evolved darker and more scaly skin to protect against UV rays, similar to humans in Africa developing higher melanin content for the same purpose. The scales it has are possibly due to the desert environment demanding more pronounced reptilian traits to survive as well. This subspecies also has a different shaped head with more powerful jaws due to bone being a staple of it’s diet and based on the mask, a cultural aspect. The overly aggressive and more savage behavior could be explained by the sheer lack of food in such a sun-baked wasteland, requiring the Ferals to essentially take “eat it while it’s still there” to the next level. Another speculation made by my professor is that if a similarity to human evolution could be drawn, this type of Yautja could be the progenitor of the species, with the more well known classical Predators being the result of ancestors that migrated to more dense jungle habitat, allowing the cream-colored and more clammy skin that they possess.

This movie should've been in theaters! Honestly, I had low expectations because it was a 'straight to streaming' movie, which in my eyes is basically how we viewed 'straight to dvd or tv' movies back then, you automatically assume they're bad because they didn't get a theater release. I love so much how she set up the final battle, how she prepared & planned out the whole thing, reminds me of Batman lol. My only gripes were that I felt the acting wasn't the best & that most of the dialogue seemed poorly written. I hope to see the next predator movie take place in like the Samurai or Ninja periods in Japan, Joseon periods in Korea.

In the movies, Predator still sees in heat vision without his mask, and it gets better resolution with the mask on, as it seems that the mask filters out ‘background’ heat sources. In the Alien v Predator video games, you generally had a dim ‘normal vision’ mode, a heat vision mode, and a vision mode that highlighted Xenomorphs, which didn’t show up on heat vision.

At least, not in this way. IMO they wrote themselves into a corner by having it end up with the tribe. MVP, her brother *Taabe,* easily! And I just saw this quote: _"When Dakota Beavers (Taabe) auditioned for _*_"Prey,"_*_ he was under the impression he'd be getting a small part in his first on-screen role."_ What a debut! *EDIT:* I like the potential of not just different times and places in history, but also going into the future, a la _Aliens._ Finally, great soundtrack IMO. ··•●✺●•··

I like the idea of adjusting the Predator weapon tech based on where the Predators are in their own timeline and technological advancement, but I also like the idea that Predators just have different weapons of choice. Take the first movie where Jesse the body was the guy who had the chain gun. Maybe there's a predator who likes the chain gun, you know? We don't necessarily need a complex lore reason for the weapons to be different aside from "this predator thinks pistols akimbo is rad". It's just that easy. The one thing you guys almost said so many times, which is what I always say about this film, is that this Predator (like the first movie) is not afraid to TAKE ITS TIME. It doesn't barrage you with an endless stream of spectacle. At least not at first. It strings you along and makes you expect it and wait for it, and it sustains that expectation and suspense via "bomb under the table" for a long time, and so it's very interesting that so much of the first half of the movie is very chill, sort of slow, a lot of scenes with not only no action, but no dialogue. That almost feels ballsy in 2022. But it works so great, and makes the later action and chaos feel so much more explosive. Cheers, guys.

I will 100% give this movie my suspension of disbelief regarding the hatchet-on-a-string weapon (and some dodgy CGI here and there), because this was a fucking amazing ride! Right up there with the original, and easily the second-best of the series. I only noticed this on rewatch, but it looks like this Predator is deliberately matching the rough 'type' of weapon it is fighting against with each prey to what it is willing to use in response (*very* broadly construed, such as a bronze-era sling and an AK-47 both being projectile type weapons). Against tooth-and-claw animals (the snake, wolf, and bear), it only uses its retractable claw weapon; once the Comanche use hatchets and bows and arrows against the Predator, it starts using its spear and dart projectiles; once the French use a net and bear traps, it answers with the constricting net that shreds people and the slice-and-dice floating mines. I really appreciate the thought and care that went into this film, in terms of when it adds something really new and fresh (like the Comanche perspective), when it just leans into being a rule-of-cool action movie, and when it cashes in on the nostalgia ("if it bleeds...").

Also, probably my favorite thing about this movie is how well it works as a drama. You could literally replace the Predator with any other creature or monster or adversary, sci-fi or magical or whatever, and still tell Naru's story. In that sense, it's as good or better than the original film for what it is vs. what an Arnold action-hero 80s action film is. It's also fascinating to see the Luke Skywalker monomyth play out with a female character, which gives it its legendary, epic feel, and really earns that ending, where she comes back home not only victorious, but changed. She started out wanting to hunt to prove something to her tribe; when she comes back she has become her tribe's protector. (And, it's also ALSO amazing that it manages to insert social commentary about gender roles AND colonialism, to boot.)

The Predator in this movie doesn't have more "primitive" tech than the first one because it's a couple hundred years ago - they have interstellar travel. The Predator in Prey has more primitive tech because they scale it to the level of who they're fighting. We see him with a spear, with arrows and darts, we see him with a shield. He doesn't have his laserbeam-weapons from the first film because that would be OP. (I mean, he's still like the rich kid who buys all the best gear and then boats that he beats everyone, but still.)

This movie is fun. It's a fresh direction on a franchise that was tired, with the setting (and of course casting actual Native Americans in the roles). You're right, the dudes who are complaining about the protagonist being a girl are just being salty. Yeah, she's inexperienced and does some dumb stuff (but so does the Predator - it clearly gets mad and acts rashly too). But I liked how they showed how she was observant and learned from every encounter - in the end, after her brother had hurt it, she was able to finish it off by using strategy based on all the things she had seen and learned over the movie. Also, I loved the bit when she whistles to attract the Predator when she had the gross French trapper for bait - whistling at night is taboo in a lot of cultures because it calls evil spirits or monsters.

The straight to streaming gimmick was solely political. All the contracts and whatnot were drawn up before the Disney acquisition of Fox, so the deal was that after it's theatrical run, HBO Max (I *think*?) would be first in line to get the exclusive first run on streaming. After Disney bought out Fox, they went "Oh yeah? After *what* theatrical run?", went straight to their own Hulu, went "fuck yoooooouuuuuuuu!" and that was that.

That was an awesome reaction to an awesome movie! I completely agree with your assessment and analysis of this really good, interesting, unique film. It's exactly what this franchise needed. I totally agree with everything y'all pointed out, from the structure, to the storytelling, and the intelligent prowess of the protagonist. This was just really well-made all around. Dan Tractenberg did a really great job. I agree that this is just right below the original Predator, but just before Predator 2 as far as how good it is. It's really disappointing to see people hating on this movie just because it has a female lead. It doesn't focus the whole storyline in the fact that she's a woman, it's just the reality of the situation. This movie isn't pandering or Woke, it's so much more than that. There's nothing wrong with a female lead as long as they aren't bashing you over the head with it, I mean just look at how it was done right with Ellen Ripley from Aliens and Sarah Connor from Terminator 2. Great explanation of the film, guys. From now on if I encounter someone bashing this movie because of their preconceived notions, I'm going to refer them to this video because you guys explained it perfectly.

If you watch the animated credits until the end, you'll see that more Predator space ships came from the sky to attack the tribe

Predator 2 is the best sequel of the franchise for the lore, the culture and weapons of the Predator. Prey is a good movie, but is prequel of Predator 1.

Love it subverted a lot of your earlier predictions. Part of why it was so good. They did the expected, but also a lot of unexpected things.

There are so many differences in the way this film is made, than the ways it would have been made in the past. Hollywood has changed.

I'm not sure if you caught it. The end credits showed the complete story up to and past the end of the movie. The final scene were THREE predator spaceships arriving, did you catch it?

We did just by inference. I don’t think that’s the strength of the franchise. As soon as you start to investigate you get hokey SciFi bullshit, like Jaws/Halloween/Alien it’s a simple premise executed very skillful and creatively

And I love the end credits artwork. If you continue to watch the artwork, more Predator ships arrive, which could be sequel bate. Are they here to just pick up the Predator they dropped off? Are the rest of the village going to try and fight them off? Are they just going to leave them alone out of respect of the girl? Whatever happens, the Predators have to get that gun away from her, in order to give it Danny Glover's character in Predator two.

I know that in Predator 2 and Alien vs Predator, the Yautja come to collect the bodies of the dead hunters. They also gift the warrior who killed their fellow Yaujta a weapon, it's part of their honor code. My theory is they trade her a weapon for the gun, as they've probably never encountered it before.

You should watch the end Credits Where the rest of the predator ships came the Earth to collect the head and the gun.

#1. Arnold is Arnold. The original. Predator #2. Prey. Its right there with Predator...oh so close. #3. Predators. Dropped on a foreign world!!! Imho excellent. #4. Predator 2. Tied #5. The two Alien vs Predator movies Ignore the 4th one. Thought it was mostly weak/poor.

The only thing I think brings this movie down for me is the very end where she returns with the head and is greeted with smiles etc. That village has just had an entire generation of their young hunters/warriors slaughtered, a massive loss for everyone. Half of the people there probably just lost their sons. The first question should be "Where are the other hunters?" followed by the devastated reaction of parents when they find out their children have died. Compare that to the end of the original Predator where it's a sombre ending showing Dutch on 'da choppa' looking defeated as he's processing what's just happened and the loss of all of his teammates. No triumphalism at all.

if there was one scene where Naru like made a promise to the tribe to avenge their deaths etc it'd emotionally track.
