On the story of masculinity throughout the films issue it also gets to masculinity in Taabe, where the traditional bad ass form of masculinity can be openly loving and supportive without suffering any sort of social bullying. He doesn't have to be hard and unemotional. He can love his mom and his sister without any sort of mask or "aw no don't be like that" "you'll never be able to do it" when in front of his boys sort of behavior. That's progress, too, IMO.

@@PierceArner i knew it was the same gun but i didn't think about how it got back into the hands of the Predators. RIP Naru.
@PierceArner2 жыл бұрын
@@beppo2814 Not necessarily. Given this film's love of the source material, there are a lot of details to consider that have far more interesting possibilities. The comics had the origin of the pistol coming from a story about a pirate crew stranded on an island where the Predator hunted them. The crew mutinied against the captain, so he fought them off being aided by the predator, but was shot in the back before the two of them turned on one another. The pistol was a gift to that predator, who was the same Elder who gives it to Harrigan in _Predator 2._ While _Prey_ established a different origin for the pistol here, it's entirely possible that it's given to one of the Predators as a gift in lieu of a direct trophy, in the same way it's done later on in _Predator 2._ That seems even more likely with the tease of multiple ships arriving in the credit sequence, given what the other films have shown about them, but also in how _Prey_ established the tension between the French & Comanche, despite both being humans. While the regular Predators are fairly often shown to be amenable towards temporary cooperation with humans against a mutual threat like in _AvP_ or _The Predator_ not all of them are. _Predators_ made it clear that the larger Super Predators hunt the regular Predators, and even the crucified Predator in that film is used in a very similar way to how the French used Naru & her brother in _Prey._ The Feral Predator in _Prey_ is physiologically different from either type we've seen before but seems significantly more like the Super Predators. Given the type of hunters that they are, it seems like they'd be the type to send down the Feral to hunt on more primitive worlds, and only come down en masse if there was something capable of killing the Feral. That's precisely what looks to be happening at the end of the film. Given that the motif and theme of _Prey_ is centered around "hunting something hunting you" and the end of the film having Naru move the tribe to higher and more defensible ground, it seems focused on expanding the circumstances they're faced with. Since she received the pistol by temporarily trusting the French translator, and also needed the Predators' own technology to win, she's in a prime position to act as a way to understand the same dynamic in the Predator castes. Just like the Frenchman explaining the pistol, she needs a Predator to be able to understand how to use their weaponry, especially after moments like the spear collapsing shut preventing her from attacking with it means she can't rely on it without that. There's no way for them to hold out against hunters equipped to kill other Predators, and looking to hunt something capable of killing one. The Predators in _AvP_ were also established as working with tribal humans to build the ancient temples, so there's also precedent to follow for that as well. Assuming that the Comanche do strike an alliance with a Predator against that larger threat, her giving up the pistol as a sign of trust seems like a natural one to establish that bond or as a show of respect in a way that would add appropriate weight and context to that gesture in _Predator 2._ It would also follow the same elements of alliance and threat of invasion that _The Predator_ was going for, but within a far more contained incident, where that particular predator being an Elder could be the whole reason that a heavier focus never got directed back towards Earth until much later.

This movie did something the other predator films didn't, hearing her war cry at the end there tears me up every time I see the scene because I felt the sacrifices she had to make to get that victory. And I say that as someone who doesn't tear up when it comers to movies. If you've worked hard at something in your life against all odds when it felt hopeless and then you finally get to that moment where it pays off, then you can relate to her in that moment. this was such a breath of fresh air for the franchise. there are different classes and subclasses of the Predator species (Yautja). this is a Feral Predator. they preferred the fight more than anything, minimum tech, and weapons. Predators also evolve depending on their prey, and where theyve hunted. so since this is the 1800th century its safe to say theyve been to earth before this. thats why in Predator (1987) we get a hunter Predator with a evolved tech and weaponary. this Predator could also be a subclass called young bloods, untested, fairly new to the whole hunt. lastly when Tabai bests the predator and it cloaks what he yells in the dubbed version is, "Cheater.." so glad yall reacted to this!!!

Guaranteed that this Predator was a Young Blood, but he does have at least some experience. Considering he's hunting solo, maybe this is his Blooding hunt. Love that you mentioned the "Cheater" part. The woman's tomahawk on a rope is a variation of the medieval Okinawan weapon: the kusarigama, a kama (or small scythe originally used for farming) with a length of chain attached to the base of the handle. The other end of the chain ended in a weighted ball. It was used to either entangle the sword blade or arms of an attacker. The kama would then be used to attack. Another variation would be to throw the kama (like the woman does) while holding the chain... not looking to impale the opponent, but to possibly cut/slice them from a distance.

I wasn't aware of this as I'm not a hardcore Predator lore guy, but someone in the comments mentioned that the plasma cannon is an "earned upgrade option" as the Predators are going through their training and trials to become better hunters.

The predator had to cloak because he knew Naru’s brother was going to wreck him. That’s saying a lot about Native American warriors.

I came to the conclusion that whoever dislikes this movie can't be my friend. :P I was around 9 when my dad bought our first VCR as a present to me and my brother, and Predator was one of the first movies I ever rented, back in the summer of 1990. Predators was ok as was Predator 2 but as Aaron Ramsey would say "Finally some good fªcking Predator."

@Heroes Reforged Just a little tidbit, the French Guy that taught Naru to fire the Gun, that was Raphael Adolini and he gave his Gun to Naru. The SAME! Gun that the Elder Predator (Greyback) gave to Mike Harrigan (Danny Glover) at the End of Predator 2.

I loved it, I loved that it brought up Easter eggs from previous predator movies. Like the gun the guy gave her and showed her, which is the same guy that was given to Danny Glovers character in predator 2 when he defeated that one and the other came in to get his body. Then the predator gave him that same guy as a reward for defeating his comrade.

The working fan theory is that Feral (this predator) is a member of Grey back's (the elder from Predator 2) clan. He has subspecies on his ship in predator 2. (That yautja'e name is Scout)and the gun that french man gave to Naru is the same one from the end of Predator 2 that Greyback gave to Harrigan. You take all that plus the fact that the end credits shows more Yautja ships coming back and you can infer it was probably Greyback coming to collect Feral's body and Naru probably exchanged the gun with him or some other similar situation which would lead to him having it to give to Harrigan

Prey is up there with the original Predator and Predator 2! The three together make the perfect Predator Trilogy! The flintlock call back at the end closed the loop for the three movies: the original, the sequel and the prequel amazingly well.
@samx362 жыл бұрын
I'm with Hector; I get that not all the movies are amazing-but we can still enjoy that they are an aspect of the greater subject. The Predator might not satisfy everyone, but for some people, it brought them into the franchise. Same will be for Prey. My favorite is Predator 2, which is very flawed but just works for me in a gratuitous violence kind of way. The human storyline ran by-then with-the Predator's and it just worked.

That comment you mentioned in the beginning, where someone said the Predator would kill her immediately because she’s just a Native American woman…that’s exactly how she ended up surviving so long to learn enough to be able to defeat it. It underestimated her as a threat. And she used that to her advantage. Edit: I commented before I got through all of your commentary, and I love your discussion on how the Predator films showcase different times of masculinity in different points and contexts of American recent history, and how this adds something different. Very interesting, and I agree wholeheartedly.

So, the flintlock’s origin is now different from the comic. Greyback now either got it as a trophy from this tribe or via a different path. I hope that gets explored in a sequel to this.

I've been a fan for over 30 years of the franchise. This is actually a pretty clever and brilliant prequel, it connects all the pieces together without trying to overwork it or overexplaining things. The fact that the predator itself has more primitive weapons makes total sense from a tool evolutionary perspective. It is set 300 years before the first one. Naru is badass and I really felt her rage in the end. Great actress she is a familiar face for those who have seen Legion. The entire cast, the VFX team and the director made an exceptional hommage to the lore.

I knew the Predator had to go when he killed the wolf. You don't touch my clan and think I want you to live! 😂And I knew it was the traders right away when I saw the buffalo, just knowing their history and how they treated the buffalo of the Plains, it wasn't surprising. This movie still moves me to tears with the Native representation. From how Naru is introduced and the family life with the tribe, I lost it when I saw a woman tanning hide in the background. And hearing the traditional language, woo! Brought me to tears. This movie was so well done and it showed so much respect to the Native people that has sorely been lacking with this type of depiction. But it's an epic Predator movie and still makes me heart race every time I watch it, and the score is absolutely gorgeous. The dog was a huge high light and it's amazing that this was her first performance in a movie. Just an instant iconic movie and have been looking forward to your reactions put on KZbin! Mussi cho guys!

As someone carrying much Choctaw blood and an acute knowledge of our history (learned independently, not from US schools of course), I was right with you when they showed the skinned tȟatȟáŋka. I turned to my wife and I said "That's not the Predator, that's f*cking trappers". Those shots hardcore pissed me off - as did most of the scenes with those filthy bastards. I was so glad when they got their comeuppance! We watched the film in the Comanche version with subtitles, and even though most of the native language was looped in and it often wasn't the actors speaking it, just hearing it provided a much more real and immersive experience. Also, I loved your good-hearted go at it...so it's spelled mahsi cho 😊

@@toddjordan2198 I was glad too when it was their time with the Predator and then the camp fight with Naru was incredibly done. I haven't watched in Comanche but I know it's going to hit differently just hearing a traditional language done with respect in a film. I'm Northern Tutchone from Yukon, Canada. That's actually how we spell it here. There are other dialects in the Yukon that spell it "Massi" but it's really incredible to learn that we have the same "thank you" and come from different Nations. This movie is the Rouge One of the Predator franchise. Only way for me to describe how it's the best movie clearly but like predator 1, empire strikes back has that nostalgic aspect that makes it the best. I mean it's empire, but Rouge One is clearly the better film to me. That's how I feel with this film. I love it more then predator 1, but the first one is so iconic and nostalgic, I have a hard time saying it's better then the original haha Idk if that makes sense but it does to me 🤣

I love how the predator growls. It sounds robotic here because its helmets nose(well, lack of) instead has layered holes, he growls and the sounds gets pushed through that nose area like a speaker almost. When he over pressured the mask, it starts stuttering. Making that robot noise. Well, this is my theory anywas.

If we get a Samurai-era Predator movie, I can only image the cinematography they can achieve. I almost see the final battle between our hero (a Ronin maybe? trying to reclaim his honour?) and the Predator. A super wide shot, the two characters in silhouette, heavy rain, booming thunder, with an incredible score in the background. I guess basically just fuse Ghost of Tsushima with Predator and we've hot a hit!
@thevoidbringer89252 жыл бұрын
That could work really damn well! Also a Nordic setting too - maybe make it like a sort of a very loose "Beowulf"-inspired story (with the Predator as Grendel or smt). They need to fully adopt the Assassin's Creed type of jumping through different eras - there's so much potential for different stories and settings.
@frostmawedits98792 жыл бұрын
@@thevoidbringer8925 Hell yeah! I would love one set in the Nordic era. Would be so interesting if they find a way to tie it into the mythology, at least from the characters' perspectives - thinking it's some sort of test from the Gods, but in truth it's just an alien hunter.

Super Late. But, for everyone wondering how she beat a Predator without tech, refer to what the brother said about her injuring the lion. Then the brother was able to beat the injured lion. The brother then delt a lot of damage to the predator before the final battle with the sister. It was a great movie. It's number 2 on my Predator movie list after the original.

negative people on the internet: This girl is too small to take down a predator! Predator (1987): Even Dutch couldn't take it down hand to hand, he had to outsmart it like Naru did. "What about in Predator 2, Mike Harrigan took it down" apparently in the Novelization of the movie, the City Hunter was just fatally wounded, and willingly allowed the Elder Predator "Greyback" to behead him instead. Oh and also, when Taabe fights the Predator and it cloaks away, he actually yells "Cheater!"
