When you want to upgrade a car audio system the first and sometimes the hardest step is figuring out how much it's going to cost. How much is a car audio system? What is considered an entry level car audio system budget and what is considered a high end car audio budget? What process should we use to pick subwoofers, head units, amplifiers, speakers, and other gear in order to maintain our budget? What car audio expenses can sneak their way into a project? Let's discuss!

I would love to see you build a system for a 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee summit edition with the 19 speaker Harmon Kardon sound system as I am planing to order one later this year and I want to add majors bass to it and lots and lots of power I was thinking JL audio W6v3 x2 with a RF P1000x1bd as the mono amp and idk about replace it all 19 speakers lol let’s see how you build that system with a fully integrated Navi and dvd system built in to the Jeep Grand Cherokee summit edition with 19 speaker Harmon Kardon sound system

It can be done. Maybe depends on your car and type of music...prob a bunch of other factors. I spent $385 on my system for my '74 Challenger restoration. I listen to rock & metal mostly. System includes a head unit (Kenwood KMM-BT728HD), a pair of 6"x9" (Boss P69.4C), a pair of 4" round (BE423), and a pair of 4"x10" (Boss CH4330), amp (Rockville dB45), and amp kit (Rockville RWK42). I used $100 XMAS money to bring my actual down to $285. I am installing myself so not figuring any labor cost cause if I wasn't putting the stuff in I'd probably be watching KZbin & I don't pay myself to do that 😊. I know the stuff I bought is probably lower end but I am not trying to rattle the neighbors house with big ole subwoofers and I wanted something economical. The real hard core audiophiles can pick it apart I am sure but there you go. Well under $500 and it plays music...pretty loud.

Two years ago as a total novice at car audio, I spent $2400 on components and materials. I did all the work myself after watching too many videos and joining several forums where I could ask technical questions and receive credible advice. If I were to count my time as a professional carpenter, the price would have been close to $6,000. It's one of the best investments I've ever made in myself. And my system still sounds amazing so every time I climb behind the wheel, I do so with a big grin on my face.

Great job Mark! This is a much needed topic of discussion in the KZbin community simply because few people think to include it. I'm working on a system for a 2008 Lexus IS250 and it's gone well over my initial budget plans. A lot of that was because I haven't done a car audio install in many years so I'm having to purchase quite a few tools and special parts. And I did PRO AV Install for 15 years so I have a ton of tools already. But there's many specialty tools needed in Car Audio that I had to invest in.

When you buy certain things , such as car engines , boats, bikes, and audio equipment , there are price points which yield large improvements for smaller increases in price. Generally when upgrading from the lower end to medium end equipment you see the most bang for your buck. From medium end to high end you tend to spend a whole lot of money for little gain . With all the surrounding noises from the road it would be very difficult to hear these improvements in sound quality , you might hear them if you are parked with all your windows up. I believe most people would be very happy with equipment that is priced in the 2K price range, not including installation. Your " Big Bass" with entry level gear is a fine example of such a thing.

To yall complaining about price.. you can build a solid system for a grand. His prices are spot on. But like anything in life, you get what you pay for. If you want to be cheap and spend 300-600 on a system with trash DS18/Boss/Ignite/Walmart specials, then sure, go ahead. But when it sounds like shit, or takes a shit after a few months, don't be surprised. The key to this is just doing your research, find good sales, and DIY as much as you can. There are also very good house brands (Dayton/NVX) you can use for budget builds.

Nothing wrong at all with that! Quality has a price, and the great thing about car audio gear is if you hold on to your factory gear its pretty easy to pull all the good stuff out and keep it for the next car if you go to trade in the old car and put that factory stuff back in! I used my first "high end set" of speakers in three different cars! All of which were beaters, but I still have those speakers! The cars are lost to time!

Properly installed in 95% of cars with a "premium" option the aftermarket will sound better. All OEM premiums systems still 1) have to be light 2) have to use a limited amount of the vehicle's electrical capabilities. These two factors alone quickly diminish the potential

I have a 10.speaker Alpine premium system with an 8" woofer, 3 tweets on the front stage etc. I replaced two of the 2.5" front dash tweeters with just Infinity reference 2.5's. the immediate sound quality difference was massive. I have no doubt when I'm done it will be many times better than "premium" sound. P.s. the tweeters (2.5" "tweeters" with cones) I removed were insanely light, cheap, untreated paper cones. This $2k sound option used speakers that likely cost less than $10/pair.

As always...Mark is keepin it real. I'm sure many of us have made the most common mistake being overly ambitious and under funded at 17. The problem being that it gets pricey quick so having a stack helps. Golf is not a cheap sport to play and you wouldn't improvise using a broom because it's way cheaper. 😉 In general, in regards to car audio you can expect to get what you pay for. There is no such thing as a lot for a little. I'm not saying you have to buy the most expensive equipment but it definitely isn't cheap.

Can you do a video on premium factory sound systems vs aftermarket options. In the past every vehicle I've had I've always immediately changed the stock speakers but my recent purchase has a premium sound system with about 16 speakers and it sounds good enough to the point where I think a budget build would only make it worse. I've already added about 2k in bass and just itching to upgrade the rest but wonder would I be wasting my money since it already sounds good to me.

Never skimp on installation. Cheap speakers installed well and with good sound deadening will sound way better than an expensive set of speakers with poor installation and no sound deadening. If I have a choice I try to keep speakers out of the doors as trying to deaden them completely is almost impossible, I will always recommend putting a 3" or bigger high up on the dash and then mid-bass under seats or in footwells, keeps the sound stage high and you get less rattles.

holy moly Mark! i'm pretty sure we could use a pre fab ported under seat qbomb box 149$ with a couple of shallow skar or rockford subs for 200$ & get more than enough bass inside that truck cabin...I know this cause I've done it. head unit & interface for about 650 total, speakers in doors another 300-350, 5 channel rockford at 2 ohms on the sub channel another 600 & amp kit plus rca's etc. another 100 bucks.... just over 2k total

I posted this on a video from September 2020, but I wanted to also get this out on your most recent video so that I have a better chance of feedback from you and the audience. I have never installed an audio system. And like most of my other projects, of course, I think of a very complicated system. Since I didn't know anything about enclosure sizes or components that are considered for these builds, I have been watching many of these videos the past few days. I have been finding them very helpful. Things that I still have not had answered are things like, "where do I need to be putting each speaker, and in what orientation?" and "what does the actual wiring process look like in the car and the placement of the amps?" I saw some of your videos that were explaining the different locations and orientations for subs and one that explained how to position the tweeters in the a-pillar. It may be due to the fact that I just started looking at videos a few days ago, but I haven't seen much info on anything in between. I would like to if that isn't something you haven't done. I have watched the videos explaining how you chose the size of wires, and how things connect, but I would love to see the process when you are working on the whole system wiring on the car. Like I said before, I thought of a very complex first project. I am planning for my next car build. Even though I don't have the car yet, I like to have a fairly thorough plan before I even purchase the car. One of the aspects of the build was a cool idea, but I realized that, for it work how I want it to, it would require two different sources. And yes, that means separate sound systems. I am definitely okay with hearing some feedback and criticism. However, I will warn you though, all I need is the to be a possibility in order to go through with my projects.

Thanks for the feedback. It's a hard challenge for me making the videos because if I go super into every last detail people say the video is boring (as they already know the basics). There is also the challenge that people start to think that the video is only worth watching if they have that exact car. For these reasons I try to keep things more focused on the general theory and topics and direct to my past videos for some of the more specific details but maybe I can figure out a way to have more of the detailed stuff in the future. Just know as a content creator its nearly impossible for me to please everyone, and usually its the folks that aren't happy that have the most to say.

placing the speakers is relatively a step by step process. though time consuming, it can be absorbed from videos. wiring is what give me pause. anything done wrong or less than optimal means issues such as noise in system. even in my car, the first audio shop which was supposed to be experts (they weren't) introduced noise and could not figure it out. car is perfect now, never selling it!

As usual very informative! Thanks Mark. I would like to see an entry level system build because that's what I am planning to do in my 2017 VW Golf. (2 tweeters, two in front doors, 2 in the rear, and I'm thinking of a one 8" or 10" sub in the back while saving useful space. I'm aiming for 200 or 300 watts tops (without wow & flutter base).

A big tip to take away from this video is how I talked about focusing more of your budget on those front speakers. I've done many systems where I don't even bother with the rears as they aren't nearly as important as up front and rather put that money there. But sounds like a good plan!

It’s crazy to me how expensive it has gotten to upgrade in modern vehicles. Even with cheap Chinese equipment (SKAR etc) you’re still spending a ton on conversion/bypass/adapter equipment. Which manufacturer makes the best OEM gear? I’ve heard great things about Mark Levinson from Lexus.

I have been watching your youtube videos and love your work. I just need a suggestion. I am running a set of Alpine X65c components in the front, a Rockford Fosgate P1-1X12 sub from a Pioneer PRS D4200F 4 ch amp which gives 75w per channel at 4 Ohm and a set of Morel Maximo ultra coaxials at the back which are run of my Jvc head unit. The doors are 2 layer damped with acoustic foam rings at the back and front of speakers The mid bass is great but the sub bass is not keeping up and I am looking to improve that. The Rockford sub can handle 250w 4ohm I am looking to add a mono amp to give 250w to the sub. The mono amp I am looking to get is the kenwood X502-1 which puts out 300w 4ohm or the Rockford fosgate r2-250x1 which is 250w on 4ohm. Will that be enough or I am also thinking of swapping the sub with a dd audio le-m10 which can handle 250-500w 4ohm. Would that dd audio sub be a definitive improvement or I just need the mono amp? Thanks

Ok this is the cultural limit of the advice I can take from a video. These videos are quite packed with good information. My issue is that I, being from eastern Europe, cannot relate to the USA/Canada budgets. The "entry level" budget presented in this video is more than my actual monthly wage 😂 and I'm one of the "privileged" ones that are included in the mid-class. Therefore, the budget will have to be much more strict. I will continue to watch the videos for educational purposes though.

I'm just being realistic. I have many questions from folks that think that they can get a fully amplified, DSP controlled, 4 speaker system plus sub for $200 and its just not realistic. While I'm sure it's possible to buy "aftermarket" gear at such a price it's not going to be anything better than factory and IMO the values in the video relate to what actually will start to move the needle in terms of performance
@adyandrey23andrey

@@CarAudioFabrication you are absolutely right. You cannot expect any quality from a $200 system. I believe you cannot even buy a complete new system for that amount, no matter how low end. Considering the financial limitations, it should be better to start from something and build your way up. First a decent quality sub/amp combo. Then add a good speakers amp, then speakers, then DSP if really needed. I believe you actually have a video explaining this. This is easier and more friendly on the wallet. But again, I'm speaking from my point of view, in regards to the available budgets. Thanks Mark!

I'm getting ready to start upgrading my system in my car. It's a newer one with a head unit that can't be upgraded. The bass is the weakest point so I'm going to put a 10 in my trunk and get rid of the factory sub. I have an amp but it doesn't have high level inputs, so I bought an lc2i to work with the signal I have. I'm questioning that decision now though. I wish I would have went with the DSP instead because I already know that I'll probably be slowly upgrading the entire thing. I went with the LOC because I'm starting with just an amp and sub. It's just been so long since I've done this that I fell way behind on the latest and greatest way to do things.

I would be keen to get your reaction to a sub $1k upgrade like this.
