This video will hopefully assist you in choosing the right tool to suit you and your style of stitching.
Due to its size and to make it easier to find the iron you want to see, it has been broken down into a number of parts.
In addition to this, you can download the specification sheet from. www.armitageleather.com look towards the bottom of the page for free downloads.

I just bought these so glad to hear what you say! I am using them to stitch guilty as charged!

This is the perfect steel for pricking irons. I’m glad the maker actually did his/her research and sourced a good steel, instead of opting for a steel that sound fancy, like some of these Chinese manufacturers that use steels like DC53 which is really good for knives since it has high edge retention but it’s very hard and brittle, has very low impact resistance and very low toughness and so it’s very likely to chip or break especially with those finer tooth design.

Always good and honest reviews. Thank you! I don't see these as having the value they are priced at.

This video nicely demonstrates things I hate about synthetic threads - gets opaque under tension, has minimal grip. Also, a far less pleasant feeling in hands... Anyways, a great review as always. Amy Roke still wins design-wise. Those clean lines...those curves :) . If I get rich doing leathercraft, I will buy a pair just for photo shoots, lol :). I have a pair of Kevin Lees, which are imho better(easier to use, can go through 6mm of leather with ease...), but the design is a lot more utilitarian.

In the Chinese Taobao shop, he sells lower than North America. I wanted to buy from there and told him how much shipping price to Canada and he increased the shipping price up to the North American retail price. I don't like his behavior. so I bought a set similar one from diff. manuf. at a similar price from another maker. Not friendly guy as others.

Yeah, pain to deal with. Do you know if someone sells the same linen-cotton blend thread as Amy Roke does, btw?

Love watching your tool reviews, its great to see an artisan working with tools he's not being paid to praise and giving an honest opinion. You've mentioned steel grades in some of your videos, when it comes to choosing a tool that you want to use on a daily or at least semi regular basis, would you consider this the most important indicator of tool quality or is are there other factors you find more important? such and feel in the hand? Or possibly innovation (i.e how companies like sinabroks challenged the way pricking irons are made). Apologies if this is covered in your Vimeo videos, but given the rise in online rdering capabiliies in the far east, is there the possibility of covering how you evaluate a tools quality and how you judge a tool steel grade (to a layman) in a video (Vimeo or otherwise, no doubt it'd be quality info worth paying for!) Kind regards, SJ

Hello, could you give me a advice in choosing pricking irons in 10 spi (2,7mm). I'm deciding between Vergez blanchard and Amy Roke. I know both irons are good and I have experience with VB 9spi and I was happy with stitch marking. Is Amy Roke stitch marking more consistent and clean over the Blanchard? Thank you

Hi Zdenek, If you have experience of Blanchard and want to keep the irons as a set, then this would be an option, however the quality of Amy Roke irons is outstanding and you would not be disappointed. They give an exceptionally consistent and pleasing stitch. Hope that helps.

Hi! Great videos. If you could only have one, Crimson Irons or Amy Roke, which one would you chose? All the best

I have a crimson Japanese and crimson french style one. The Japanese one robust teeth and the french one is thinner teeth. Bought WUTA and the stitch look great, but the teeth are thinner and weaker. again bought from a different company and the same price as the amy roke. I'm not always happy until I try most of them and lose money. (I'm not professional yet, never be a commercial one I think because of too much work and too little money.

I'm really confused. new to the craft. do I use chisel or iron and awl? European or Japanese? I'm looking for something budget friendly as I'm new. also I don't care about how they look, I care about functionality and durability.

Sounds like me 5 years ago, all I can say to you is choose a method and style and give it a go. Pricking Iron and Awl is not easy, stitching chisel is easier but less flexible for certain situations. I personally now do almost all my work using stitching chisels due to the fact my awl work is horrendous. lol It really comes down to the look and method of the stitching you like the most. I suggest watching a lot more of Nigel's videos or other crafters videos using awl or irons in making projects and seeing the differences.
