I'm in Arizona in the US where prickly pear grows wild and we just use the flame from the stove or grill to burn off the thorns and stickers off the fruit, no need to make a bonfire. We also eat the green pads, we call them nopalitos which is a Mexican term as we live right on the border of Mexico, and sliced up and cooked with meats or scrambled eggs they can be quite delicious!

Thank you so much for the tip with the plastik bottle!! Years ago I collect them, smart I am, with protective cloves!! Not considering that I had to pull the other glove with my uncovered hand when taking it off. Result: 2 hours looking for the spines and pulling them out, which is not easy because they are so small and transparent! Like fiberglass !! Since then I only buy the cleaned fruits. Will try the recipe. The only problem is that when peeling it ends up more in the stomach than in the container😇

I have one prickly pear cactus. I don't know exactly how old it is, but for the last five years now it has produced fruit. 2 years ago it had over 200 fruits which we picked and processed for jelly, we had 3 gallons of juice leftover fourth last year. The fruit I picked last year was given away to those who wanted to use it. I just counted how many fruit would potentially be there in August and I stopped counting at 300. I'm glad I saw this video making wine with your prickly pear fruit. I'm going to have to try this.

I tried it once and it came great... the only thing i did different was that how you shown people to peal the cactus fruit is to eat it....to make wine i simply cut the pickly pear fruit alongside all the way down then i simply scooped the inside with a spoon, i also do not waste anything from the sides... you still need to crush it before starting to ferment it if you cut it as shown in the video..

Your method is very similar to the ancient Indian process of preparing herbal medicines based on mild alcohol used as preservative. Grapes were always used as the base in any alcoholic medicine. Yeast was never added separately but grapes and a type of flower was believed to have "alcohol seeds" (yeasts and bacteria essential for fermentation). So probably you made one form of "Cactus Potion".😉 🙏

I have always wanted to know how to make home made vinegar, interesting point he makes stating when removing the already fermented fruit into the other container, that if it gets too much air it might cause it to turn to vinegar. Vinegar is really an important needed substance for canning, and preserving, and is a process that we need to know how to do. There is a lot of lost knowledge that we need to be passing down to our children, too. The Native Americans, Cherokee, anyway, tell that we are responsible for our children, and their children, to know all of the things that we know. Our children are to be taught all of the ways of attaining food, preserving it, storing it, and to pass it down, even if we are not currently using it.

To remove the glochids i mix calcium hydroxide into water, and let the pears sit for 12-24 hours, this completely dissolves the glochids without damaging the flesh of the fruit. If you only use water they will start to grow back.
