In every adaptation, I've been mostly okay with Mr. Collins. This actor playing Mr. Collins did such an amazing job at making me feel so much disgust at once during his introductory song...oh my god. Good work to the singer as well as whoever wrote the lyrics, I hate him lmao
@tabithajohnston313 Жыл бұрын
His song was, by far, the best! So many of the other songs felt disingenuous or pretentious, but that song was funny, accurate to Jane Austen's portrayal of the character and free of any misunderstandings of society in P&P's time period.

I really enjoyed this for the most part. But Lizzy's solo rejecting Lady Catherine's demands--it's totally inaccurate. The Bennets are NOT poor, they are not common either. In the book, she says "Darcy is a gentleman, and I am a gentleman's daughter." She is gentry, and so is Mr. Darcy. True, the Bennets don't have the same level of wealth that the Darcys do, but the only reason the Bennet girls have such small dowries (and the book makes this very clear) is because of the entail (which ties up not only the estate but the money for Mr. Collins), Mr. Bennet's neglect in saving a sufficient amount for his daughters' dowries, and finally, the fact that there are 5 of them to split up what little dowry money is available. And lest modern audiences feel contemptuous of dowries, which smack of the buying and selling of women, those dowries were the daughters' inheritance. In that old-fashioned English system, the oldest son (or other inheriting male relative like Mr. Collins) would get the bulk of the estate including the money, the younger sons would be provided with enough money and connections to get an education and join either the clergy (in a high end parish with a good living) or the military (as an officer, again with a comfortable living). The daughters' inheritance is the dowry. And only the dowry. Which is why it is supposed to be substantial--it was her contribution to her future family's income and situation. That dowry is meant to help set the daughter and her husband up in a comfortable, and hopefully profitable way. All in the husband's name, of course, unless the marriage contract specified that certain funds were to be reserved for the children (especially any daughters' dowries) or for the possibility of widowhood, or for the wife's allowance. The gentry class was never supposed to participate in trade (business). They had to make all their income passively--from real estate and investments, or be rejected from the society of those with similar lifestyles, education, and income (read: lose potential mates for their children). That meant that marriage was crucial, and a good dowry was critical. Which brings me to another gripe. Elizabeth's statement that she doesn't know if she ever will, or even if she wants to, marry and have children is just not accurate to the times. That's a modern woman's view, and one that doesn't take into account the very limited choices women had in the early 19th century. Elizabeth's alternative to marriage would be to live on one of her married sisters' charity for the rest of her life, to never have her own home. That's assuming, of course, that at least one of them married well enough to support a spinster sister. Darcy and Lady Catherine consider Mrs. Darcy crass because she is so desperate to marry off her daughters. But that is in large part because if the Bennet sisters DON'T marry before their parents' deaths (and remember, people didn't live as long in those days), they will be homeless and in poverty. If at least one or two are married, they will at least provide homes for the remaining single sisters. The thing is, Darcy knows this. And while he likely doesn't know the details of the entail, he probably knows enough to understand the situation. So he is indeed being very judgemental about Mrs. Bennet. Lizzy does defend her mother in the book--much more so that in this musical, because she knows the motivation. She's still embarrassed by her mother's obnoxiously obvious matchmaking (especially because it's so crass that it might actually be doing more harm than good), but she knows how important it is that she and her sisters marry. Unlike modern times, the parents' social network was key in finding appropriate spouses for their children. Everyone in that time and place and social situation knows that money and social status are important considerations for marriage--but everyone is supposed to marry for love too. In fact, someone marrying outside their station in life is considered destined for a miserable marriage no matter how much they think they love each other because their situations, educations, and financial expectations are too different. Mr. Bennet also bears considerable blame for the situation. He didn't HAVE to sign the entail. But he married a wife whose judgement he didn't trust--and perhaps because of that he felt he couldn't trust his future daughters' judgements either (accurate, in the case of Kitty and Lydia, though they're very young to be expected to have good judgement). Granted, he did it thinking he and his wife would eventually have sons. He also could have put aside plenty of money for dowries--which he didn't, believing a son would arrange it from the estate. But that was short sighted. And he never should have let his 15 year old daughter spend all the time she did with soldiers or go to Brighton at the the invitation of an officers' wife. The safety of that situation would be questionable even today (think of it as sending a sophomore in high school off with a bunch of college kids for a Spring Break trip with no birth control), but in that day and age it was not acceptable at all, and he, as head of the household should have forbidden it. Though again, probably Mrs. Bennet allowed it hoping Lydia would marry one of the officers--they were likely of her social class, though younger sons without expectations of the same kind of lifestyle that Lydia grew up with. This show did an excellent job of showing the effect of Lydia's misbehavior on the the rest of the Bennet sisters and any prospect they had of marriage. As unfair as it was, Lydia's behavior would have been assumed to be an outgrowth of how she was raised, and most people would assume that any of her sisters at any time might do exactly the same. I loved the actors' potrayal of Elizabeth, Mr and Mrs. Bennett, Lady Catherine, and Lydia. Darcy has a gorgeous voice, and the duet with Lizzy was beautiful. The set was great. Though Mary's announcement of the setting of each scene was a bit weird and unnecessary. There was a bit too much tell instead of show in some parts, but all in all, it was very enjoyable. Modern enough to make it understandable, and true enough to Austen show why it's a beloved classic even 200 years later. The costuming was excellent too--except for Lizzy's dress at the end--what is up with that weird geometric batik? That's a fabric I would expect to see in a 21st century beach dress, not a Regency gown! But I really like how the older ladies (Lady Catherine, Mrs. Bennet) had clothing styles more reminiscent of previous decades--the late 1700s. Just how an older lady might hang on to styles she always loved rather than adopt her teenagers' more fashion forward looks. All in all, I really enjoyed it! 4 out of 5 stars!
@tabithajohnston313 Жыл бұрын
Some excellent points! The playwright's and lyricist's lack of attention to the details in the book and of Regency society ruined this musical for me, unfortunately. And I was rooting for it to be great, too!😭 An entail could last for up to three generations, however. Since Jane Austen does not say Mr. Bennett signed the entail himself, it seems best not to assume he prematurely overly estimated his high Y-chromosome count.

Is this objectively a good musical? No. Have I watched it several times? Yes. Most of the time they just...start singing, out of nowhere. No lead up, no building up, just the feeling that a very annoyed director was standing off stage telling them to start bloody singing already! It can be very jarring. Honestly, most of the songs are very "Compser's First Musical" (except Her Ladyship's Praise, which does indeed slap). There are lines or melodies that I like, but as a whole, not even the songs I like feel polished enough for an audience. Mary just announcing the setting gets more hilarious as it progresses (and probably not in the way intended). Actually reconstructing that 4th wall might be the best fix for this play. It does not feel like the characters are talking to each other half the time, but are instead just talking to the audience. Which does not help sell any of the relationships here. I can see the bones of something good here, and there is certainly enough character to it that over the years I have watched it 3 or 4 times, but to be anything more than passable, carried along mostly on nostalgia for the feelings audiences already entered the theater with, it would require some reworking of both the book and the music.

Thank you! I agree wholeheartedly. I just went to see this show live tonight at my town's local summer theater company, and I just don't think it does the original story justice. @@jamesthrasher431 for this version there are parts certainly enjoable to me, but some roles being overly dramatic just make me feel off and kinda cringe🥲 tho i imagine its very difficult to decide what to put into songs, when the original plot is mostly subtle communications arts of a rather simple love story.. but a very good musical to me just brings new perspectives when we dig deeper into characters when they sing:)

They fell into the trap of "female heroine ahead of her time needs to be rejecting all social norms". I don't think I read anywhere that Lizzy wasn't interested in having children or marrying. I always felt like she just didn't consider it a realistic expectation because she wasn't as pretty as Jane and also knew her family's poverty made a good marriage unlikely at a time when most people married for money. I think she would've happily married Wickham if he hadn't turned out to be a gold digger and immoral asshole.

This video showed up very unexpectedly in my recommended section and I clicked on it, not expecting much at first. However, I'm delighted to say that I very much enjoyed the entire musical and have already sent the link to my mom who's an Austen fan as well. I think the actresses/actors/singers did a great deal to have the characters come alive on stage and I was positively giddy every time I encountered a dialogue snippet from either the 2005 or 1995 BBC version (or the book of course). While it was no easy task to include the entire book in only 2 hours of play, the most important aspects were present as well as the overall character arcs. I further enjoyed getting glimpses into Darcy's perspective as these are obviously not included in most adaptations and I helped to flesh out his character a little bit more as well as his devotion to Elisabeth. I personally would have preferred a little more dialogue between the songs/ longer scenes as it felt a little rushed at times. Nonetheless, I liked the songs that were written for each plot point and I admire how some have been re-used slightly differently in their reprises to accentuate change or callbacks within the stroyline. Overall a great job, thank you for uploading!

What is the most positive about this to me is that musical is the perfect medium for Pride and Prejudice where male characters do not particularly talk and thus misunderstandings occur, but now we have songs as the outlet for those unsaid feelings, especially since they are placed so well. One cannot go wrong with Austen's text and the lyrics are good, but the music lacks in depth and orchestration and it is just too modern for the original text. I also really liked the juxtaposition of arranged marriage and happy marriage which comes right from the start and frames the narrative context. Pity Lizzy doesn't have time to change dresses, particularly for the balls.
