Lady Catherine (that great old dragon Edna May Oliver) is far more comic and harmless in this version, but MGM broadened everything in this adaptation. Animated and bouncy, Austen comes across more like Dickens. Once one adjusts to this, it's a happy and carefree experience, and certainly the most fun of all the different versions.

Boy, they really took literally license. Lady Catherine had no such power over Darcy.

She didn’t have that power in the version either. You learn in the next scene that it was a ruse to see if Elizabeth was just after the money.

One thing is for sure. Although I like this version for the humor value, the costumers didn't do much research. Jane Austen lived during a time in England called "The Regency Period." That was during the Napoleonic War and the dress was much different than the type of wear the women are wearing. The Josefine dresses were popular and not Dickensian garb which became prominent during the early Victorian era.

They did it because they had a bunch of costumes left over from Gone With the Wind that they could use for free. Had they used proper period dress they would have needed to rent it, and at this point in time they couldn’t afford to.

There's no rule that says Austen novels have to be filmed with costumes from the period when they were written. Look at all the adaptations of Shakespeare plays in modern dress, etc. And although the dresses in this film may have utilized Gone With the Wind 'leftovers,' I think it was very clever to fashion them in the flamboyant style of the 1830s (NOT the 1860s time frame of GWTW) - these gowns fit the 'over the top' personalities of Mary Boland and Edna May Oliver's characters. I love this version of the story!

Greer is a great Elizabeth Bennett. Her mother is great too as is Lady Catherine. Judy Dench was horrible mid-played.Olivier was too theatrical. But as handsome as Darcy was supposed to be. 1995 good because it gave it some time. Mr Collins great in 95 version.

Edna Mae Oliver was amazed how the film script changed the famous role of Lady Catherine, a truly awful and imperious individual. But being an experienced actress of the greatest skill (the original Parthy in "Show Boat") she took it in stride. With that horse face (her own description), size and voice, she said you used to come home at night, look in the mirror, and laugh heartily at all the money she was making. She was very talented, very skilled and very smart..

Big departure from the book. This meeting is covered in Chapter 56.Lady Catherine never steps into the Bennett house but requests Elizabeth to accompany her on a walk outside in the garden. But more than just a change of location, the story has been re-written. Elizabeth already knew that Darcy had bought Wyckham off and forced him to marry Lydia. This was no great surprise to Elizabeth. Nor, in the book, does Lady Catherine threaten to disown her nephew. What this chapter of the book offers the reader is to see Elizabeth go head to head with the Lady Catharine. In this regard the movie falls far short of the novel.

Oh, they did! They just didn’t care. The movie was produced on a shoestring budget to build up MGM's coffers for what they thought would be a long and unprofitable war. By the way, the screenplay was by a staff writer: Aldous Huxley.

It probably is, but I have never enjoyed it much somehow. This version (adapted from a stage play, not directly from the novel), makes me smile, makes me laugh, makes me believe the five Bennet sisters have lived together all their lives and know each other; make me believe that Mr. and Mrs. Bennet have spent many, many ...... many years as husband and wife. I love Melville Cooper's Mr. Collins: there is something in his prissy, fastidious manner and delivery, combined with a certain subdued sprightliness that brings this silly man to life, and no other Mr. Collins quite does that for me.

They used what they had, to save money. This was made at the beginning of World War II (before it began for the US, in fact) and MGM didn’t pay a penny more for this production than they needed to. The costumes were originally made for Gone With the Wind. The studio made it out that Louis B. Mayer loved the costume aesthetic so much he insisted the date of P&P be moved to the 1850s, but in reality they simply didn’t want to spend money they didnt have to.

@@Ea-Nasir_Copper_Co And they still lost money on it. In the gloominess of a war, they were aiming for entertainment. Hence the humorous take on a classic story. After the long Napoleon wars, Jane might have enjoyed it if she could have seen it.

Edna May Oliver was a wonderful actress and well cast as Lady Catherine (Greer Garson's rather dull, IMO). But it's a pity this version of Pride & Prejudice was directed by a studio hack, Robert Z. Leonard, and not by a director who would understand the drama inherent in this scene which is really the climax of the book. This should be a battle between two very strong willed women and even between two classes and while Elizabeth has a sharp wit, it in no way should be funny.

The early victorian/romance period costumes were available at this time, and kept the filming budget down. While we all would have prefered Regency gowns, I love tbis interpetation of Elizabeth. Jennifer Ehlers Elizabeth was more controled . The humor of Elizabeth was limited to Ehles eyes . Knightlys Elizabeth was missing this aspec of the Character. Greer and Ehler were warmer.

I used to hate this version. Really, people need to get over the idea they are better writers than Jane Austen. Even if they are Aldous Huxley. But now I have to admit that aside from Greer Garson, the cast and direction are great. If only they were in a version truer to the book, they would be perfect.

Greer Garson may have been too old and the film may have gotten just about every major aspect wrong from the book, but I'm biased as its the first version I'd seen and when I think Elizabeth Bennett Greer is usually the one I think of first. Part of what I think works is that while Lizzy is twenty and Greer was in her 30s when she played her, the character is supposed to be wise beyond her years and more mature than her sisters (which meets halfway with the fact that Greer looked younger than her actual age). I think Greer's natural warmth goes a long way towards establishing what Jane Austen described as "a lively, playful disposition which delighted in anything ridiculous" and "something more of quickness than her sisters." I get why its not everyone's cup of tea but I just love it
