The Church of Ethiopia is one of the most ancient in all Christianity, dating back to the Apostolic era when the Ethiopian nobleman Frumentios was taught, and baptised by Apostole Phillip and ordained as bishop in order to carry the Gospel back to his homeland. Unfortunately the equally ancient Churches of Nubian and Meroy located in today's Sudan, perished after the Mameluck invasion , 13th ce.

If you meant "Frumentius", He was not Ethiopian but a Thracian who originally came from Constantinople, He was the one who converted the king of axum following the example of Constantine the great. The first christian empire was Eastern Rome, and Axum came later following the foot of rome.

@@teddyissak2720 1. There was no Constantinople at the 1st century 2. Frumentios was a convert to Judaism. There were no Thracian converts, while there were plenty of Ethiopians, and still are a few. 3. The text of the Acts mentions him as an Ethiopian .

Before hundreds of tourists start overrunning these sacred sites, these people should set in motion a program that preserves the cultural and religious integrity of places like this. One problem with tourists is that they strip these locations of their sacred status. Italian cities are now ruined due to the overwhelming numbers of foreign visitors who are often there for just a day or two.

@@dnwitte I hope you are correct in imagining a future without tourists ruining everything. But look at Nepal and the big increase in people going there. They switched the rhythm into double time at about 2:14 before slowing back down at about 2:34. Then they went back into double time briefly at 3:02. Was that the joyful part of the text in the chant they were singing?
@JK-ws6qr Жыл бұрын
This is called a ‘wereb’. Usually 2 lines long. Each line is repeated twice. At the start they are both said slowly 3 times. Then when the line is repeated it is chanted faster. The rhythm gets faster when they are clapping you will notice. And then onto the next line the rhythm slows down again. When they repeat that line they clap and the rhythm speeds up. Then back to the first line and so on.

A veryy brief explanation btw
@annakimborahpa Жыл бұрын
@@JK-ws6qr Thanks, so it is the same text in both the slow and fast sections. This gives me the appearance of a litany, which is a series of petitions for use in church services or processions, usually recited by the clergy and responded to in a recurring formula by the people. So is this 'wereb' a litany (petition) like the Kyrie Eleison (Lord have mercy) that is chanted in both the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches?
@JK-ws6qr Жыл бұрын
@@annakimborahpa ‘werebs’ are essentially hymns. They contain Biblical events, passage of sacred books, patristic works, hagiographies, homilies, etc. The author of these (Saint Yared) divided services of the year, not only the seasons, but also with tract of Biblical history. The hymns talk about the Creation, the prophecies related to the birth of Jesus Christ, his life and teachings, and subsequent spread of Christian faith. These were all mostly composed by Saint Yared in the 6th Century and have been passed down through our forefathers. Now looking briefly away from ‘werebs’ and looking at the bigger picture and where they are from. (They are small hymns taken and said during a much larger service called ‘mahlet’.) However ‘werebs’ can be said on their own if ‘mahlet’ cannot be carried out due to lack of knowledge etc since ‘mahlet’ also falls under a larger category called ‘aqwaqwam’ which is the study of Yared’s entirety of books. The Book of Deggua (Ge'ez: መፅሃፈ ድጓ, De'guaa, means "lamentation") is a hymnary guideline of the Ethiopian and Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Churches. The Deggua or hymnary is attributed to Saint Yared, a scholar who lived in Aksum in the 6th century. During the course of the centuries Hymns have been added by various composers. He was caught up into paradise and there received the precepts that were to guide him. These precepts are contained in the Mezegeba Deggua (Treasury of Plainsongs). Yared prepared Deggua in three modes of chanting used by the church that is known as Ge'ez, Ezil and Araray, represent the Trinity, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit respectively. The book has 5 volumes. Digua, Tsome Digua, Miraf, Zimare, and Mewasit. Tseome Dugua which is part of the Degua is written about fasting. Therefore it is sung only during Lent. Hence its named Tsome Dugua (Songs for Lent). Me'eraf is sung on Sabbath vigils, for prayer, praising the Lord or when hymns are performed. Zimare is sung after communion in honor of the Holy Communion. Mewasit is for funeral services, requiems and for Easter Eve. Quidase is performed during communion. To prepare the above mentioned book (that is the Deguaa, Tsome Deguaa, Meraf, Zamare and Mewasit) together. St. Yared laboured for nine years. This is still taught today. Mostly taught by a ‘merigeta’ (a rank in the EOTC) which means ‘teacher’. They teach deacons and they go on to become ‘merigetas’ / ‘teachers’ themselves if they wish. The study of all volumes is generally called ‘aqwaqwam’.
@annakimborahpa Жыл бұрын
@@JK-ws6qr 1. OK, so in the video they are repeating lines of a hymn and their speeding up is to heighten awareness of the text's meaning. 2. Can I assume that St. Yared is the dominant Church Father in the Ethiopian Church from which their tradition of liturgical music springs, since other composers have added to it after him? 3. It seems St. Yared's youthful encounter with the caterpillar provided him the inspiration for a life of tireless work on behalf of the Ethiopian Church.

Lalibela is a miracle that proves the location of where Religion was born..I miss Ethiopia..but I see westerners have tampered already with our building structures by adding these ridiculous steel structures thinking that they plan better than God himself.. And our priests are too impressionable by the west to forbid such things..which have ruined the holiness of Lalibela..

Those are temporary lightweight structures installed to protect art work that has become seriously degraded and buildings that are in imminent danger of collapse due to seismic activity and water damage. The church is working in collaboration with the government of Ethiopia. The property is administered under the regional and the Lasta district culture and tourism office. There's no western conspiracy to tamper with your structures.
