Priests speak out: the moral case against vaccine passports

Over the weekend, a group of over 1,200 church leaders from a range of denominations sent an open letter to the Prime Minister. It warned that vaccine passports raised serious ethical concerns and risked creating a ‘surveillance state’ that would ‘bring about the end of liberal democracy as we know it’.
We spoke to two of the original signatories - Rev Dr. William Philip, of the Tron church in Glasgow, and Rev Dr. Jamie Franklin, curator of St. George in the Meadow in Nottingham. In this interview, both offered a scathing assessment of the concept of vaccine passports and explained why they could not support it.

This past year has reminded me of those long nights as a young person spent trying to understand how people could have allowed atrocities like the holocaust to happen. I truly couldn't imagine a single person I knew at the time being complicit in something like that. This past year, however, I have come to understand something fundamental about human nature. People will justify the mistreatment of others as long as it is done in the name of keeping them safe. The thing that makes this passport concept seem particularly problematic is that this notion that it will keep everyone safe is totally unfounded. Vaccinating everyone with vaccines that all share the same immune target during a pandemic is an experiment. Still, repeat it frequently enough and people will buy into it.

Finally. The closure of churches disturbed me more than almost anything else - and I'm not even a Christian. The central problem is that the Church's archaic bronze age mythology doesn't resonate with educated people any more. Compounded by its rejection of the complexity of human sexuality. I was a staunch Orthodox Christian and God was everything in my lifetime BUT when I was assaulted and kicked out (literally) by the Priest’s Assistance and Janitor(not a Christian) at the church of Vouliagmeni in Greece in the midst of the worship and holy communion for not wearing a mask and being vaccinated, even though all the priests and some of the worshippers were not wearing masks at all, but nobody cared. I was the only Asian Japanese guy there and that Priest Assistance Singled me out! Literally assaulted me by grabbing my shirt and punching me on the face! The Janitor kicked me on my left leg so hard, it damaged my Sciatic Vein and my shin was bruised badly. It was extremely painful and I still couldn’t walk properly! They then shove me down to the floor outside the church!!! A fat woman was also helping the two of them drag me out and then threw me to the ground! Eventually, the Father came out to stop them! I lost my faith completely! How did God allow his own children and servant to be assaulted so badly in his place of worship!?! I came to a conclusion: GOD DOES NOT EXIST!

I grew up in a Christian environment, because of what I saw in church(hypocrisy) I became later on an atheist. But now I am a born again Christian, because after many years, realised that He is real. If you focus on mortal beings, (many that claim to be Christians and don't bear fruit plus their actions aren't according to what they preach), you are going to feel disappointed. Even real born again Christians are gonna fail because we are just mortal beings saved by grace and imperfect. I went to boarding school and it was exactly like lockdown: no contact with the outside world, detentions, quarantine in sanitorium if sick, no hugs with elders, letter of permission needed to leave the house. This was a fab discussion... I am not a regular church goer but recently went just to be uplifted as things were getting on top of me. No singing. Too much space between chairs and masked in a very large church! I left in tears. I said to the chap on the door ‘What would the Big Man think of all this! Elderly people not allowed to socialise and having to book a seat online! ‘ This is obviously a spiritual war, and I do believe we need to ‘go inside’ and work on ourselves to get through this! As a Catholic I feel the Church hierarchy has let us badly down over the last 12 months. They should have been a beacon of hope and had an opportunity to preach the message of salvation and life after death. Death is not the end. Instead we got church closures and even now numbers are limited and obligatory masks and don’t socialise after mass and leave the premises ASAP.

Fantastic interview. I am Roman Catholic and you have said more than our spineless priests have said about locking down churches. We have missed our second Easter and all because the holy church has pandered to the state. These priests will all have to give an account for this when they meet their maker

Agreed, a great interview on an extremely important issue. I too am Catholic, and I've been dismayed and disheartened by the total lack of faith-based leadership from the Bishops. In fact I wonder if they have any real faith in the Risen Christ, and his presence in the holy Eucharist. The first thing our local parish priest did at the start of lockdown last year was to stop all home visits to the sick and elderly and lonely... He's not visited anyone since. Of course the hospitals forbade priests from visiting the dying, but NOT A SINGLE BISHOP OR PRIEST objected to this callous, inhumane policy. When the churches finally reopened, ours was festooned with hazard tape, big NO ENTRY notices, and officious stewards with great vats of sanitiser accosting worshippers in the porch, instead of the traditional self blessing with holy water. Holy water is banned! So is music, and incense. Prayers muttered through masks, no meeting and greeting allowed, and a few months ago a new regulation: now we are forbidden to kneel!! I politely challenged our priest about this absurdity, and he said it was to "maintain social distancing". He wears a mask plus a perspex face shield while distributing communion. People are juggling the sacred Host in one hand while walking away, pulling their mask down fractionally to consume it - the other week I saw someone drop the Host to the ground. He just picked it up and stuffed it in his mouth. No reverence at all. And all in the service not of God, but of government health and safety measures which are dubious at best. I'm glad that some church people are speaking out courageously now, especially against vaccine passports. But where were they a year ago? I had to leave Mass in tears recently, looking around at the silent, cowed, muzzled remnant there, the masked priest at the altar, the ugly tape and notices, the plastic aproned stewards marshaling us to and fro... It's the end of our once great Church I fear. I can't imagine us coming back from this, what with the variant after next, the next pandemic being planned for etc. It's appallingly sad, and it makes me angry, but we have no-one to speak on our behalf.

Well i did put comment on before and said i would not say all the priest said to me but after reading comments i am saying i met the priest while out shopping he asked me if i had the vaccine i said no i am not having it i would rather put my trust in Jesus Christ he then said well myself and 2 popes would rather put trust in the vaccine and then said you will be passing the virus on to all the rest of us i was shocked and upset and told a lot of people i did not think he shoud be a priest and i wasn,t on my own when he spoke to me

I am German, and I look around me, see unfold the spirit of the 1930ies as if people had been waiting impatiently to be stripped off their own responsibility and common sense, and to finally have a reason for it. Fear. Fear is the legitimization for the gathering in groups that can then go and beat the crap out of a common enemy. The adherence to it here is mind-blowing! My entire family has bought into the narrative, and my dad used to be a history teacher! He doesn't see it, which shows just how ready we were to fall for it, after all these decades of stupidifying the human. I guess it comes down to greed and money, as naive as it sounds. We have lost the connection to something higher - and the churches have taken over (and initially away... let's not forget that) the role of that invisible link between us and that higher power. Maybe there is something in this here. Maybe they are given a chance to live the teachings of Jesus by example, for once in our History. And by all means, it feels good to see them speak up!! I stopped going to "church" since the plandemic because I cannot stand the social distancing, mask wearing, temperature checking in a church. I'd rather worship alone.

I live in the US. I have not seen my grandchildren, who live in Germany, for 1 1/2 yrs. My daughter messaged me last week so very joyful because France is considering letting Americans in IF you have been vaccinated. So she wants to make plans for us to meet in France. I am not getting the vaccine, for a host of reasons. This is driving a wedge between myself, my daughter & her husband. I miss my grandchildren.

@UnHerd - I'm very impressed with your interviews and with your choice of guests. I don't agree with them all, or with everything they say, but it is very useful and healthy to hear these various points of views that are not given much respect or attention in the mainstream. I also feel that you ask questions in a pretty unbiased way, without any agenda other than to gain a more in-depth clarity on the subject matter and give us, the viewers, an opportunity to think and learn outside of the dominant media narrative and social 'norms', and be able to formulate our own views, or better still be flexible with our understanding, based on a wider perspective of relevant information. You need to watch how the Polish pastor in Canada dealt with a church invasion by health officials and police (compared with a police invasion of Polish service in Balham London). A Polish Canadian who understands how fascism and authoritarian dictatorship operates sent them packing like dogs. There's no room for politeness in this argument any more because it's always taken as a sign of weakness

I agree. Another thing that is un-Christian is burying people naked in plastic bags, with their clothes on top of the bags, in coffins that are not kept in the church for the sermon but buried in the ground in less than 5 minutes after being brought into the cemetery from the hospital, like some highly contagious plague victims. I witnessed that first hand with a relative (that wasn't even a cvd death, but heart attack) and it hurt my soul. The priests who go along with such despicable, un-Christian rules are part of the problem as far as I'm concerned.
