Rob you've absolutely astounded me with how you approach this, and it hits me that it's not because you are or are not an innately good driver, but specifically because you're an innately good learner. Looking at how you absorb and understand the information is a hugely inspirational example of how to grow as a driver and racer, and it's the same you've shown in growing as a mechanic, an engine builder, a fabricator, a company manager, and a content creator. It hits me that there are people incredibly talented at these things individually, whether it's learned by them or innate to them, but you've combined it all and still strive to keep growing!

Wow that really means a lot. It’s something I hope to be. I like showing people that I suck at things or they don’t come naturally and with some obsession I can become proficient. I hope it shows that anyone can do what they set their mind on. Racing is a lot harder than I expected. And I enjoy the challenge of improving quickly

Very smart move having an instructor. One of the smartest things I did some years back. BMW CCA, I had an in-car instructor with me. Talking me through the turns and pointing out where I was losing time. First session out I was using power to make up for my lack of driving skills. So I turn my boost from 24 down to 10. By the end of the weekend my laptop times were 6 seconds faster with low power. And it really blew my mind using the lift turn in. I kept having problems with with understeer in the tight switchbacks. My instructor told me maintenance throttle through the right hand, then lift off the throttle as I switch to the left. Could not believe how much better my car turned. Then using the throttle to rotate around. Once you have enough laps doing it, it will become muscle memory.

My teacher told me, don't exceed 40kph, but i want a clean quick line from you. I did as best i could, only peaked like twice and had an (understandably atrocious time). But then, she got in, she drove the car, kept the thing hair over 20, hair under 40 and got almost half my time. So that was my practice for a whole month. 40kph, same route, same thing again and again and while i never got that exercise down pat to the same peaks and valleys she did, i was down almost a whole minute, just because i understood my lines, understood what i'm supposed to do with my feet and hands. My let loose run had similar effects. Started off "decent" (not really) and then it turned into cleaner and cleaner runs. When you have good teachers they can see what you are, see exactly what you mess up and they "prescribe" the perfect "medicine" for you. Going to driver's ed, is like going to the doctor to get cured. Funny thing is... it wasn't just laps around the track that got better, but my driving too. Before that prep year i was good enough, had a couple of ice slips in the winter, close calls. It's been ... almost 15 years now and i have not slipped on black ice or ice-y roads since. The amount of confidence you gain from these lesson is mind blowing. You understand the car after and don't treat it like a tool, but more like a living, breathing animal that needs a good symbiosis to do things just right.
@kcdesignconcepts5216

@@aserta yes very important. Learn how to do it right, consistently. Learn the basic driver techniques and work your way up to the more advanced. The more you practice these techniques the smoother you will be, the more stable and balance the car will be at any point on the track. Once you have the fundamentals pretty much nailed down you can start increasing your speed. I am the chief engineer for Hyde motorworks. I'm sure Rob can relate , trying to put the engineering and fabrications out of your mind and focus on driving. I struggle with that very badly my first couple sessions out on the track. Because I built my car from the ground up, I'm constantly thinking about each and every part , what is doing in that moment, what it could be doing better, how I can make it better, and of course the all-important will it hold up under the abuse. This goes for the engine and the rest of the drivetrain, suspension and reinforcements, brakes and brake cooling, and the entire chassis as a whole. Once in awhile think about an electrical problem. Usually after quite a few laps and everything going well that kind of fades to the back of my mind. But I'm still paying attention to every little noise or something abnormal in the behavior of the car. Luckily so far that has mostly been the loose nut between the steering wheel and the seat. 🤪

22'50 critical learning. Took me forever to figure out how to be fast. It's not just being on the right line, for me I had to completely change what my brain is telling me to survive and instead to 'listen' to the car and tires. Not what they were saying, but what was coming through the seat and wheel. This kid is a great instructor as he's bring Rob along at the perfect pace for Rob. Keeping him safe and pushing at the same time.

Holding the steer angle and steering with your right foot is one of those things that makes the difference between a driver amd a DRIVER. I cant tell you how many times ive spun out just to come to learn the throttle is also used to steer. At that point, its all audibly diffrent. You can hear when the gears are going into high rpm, mid rpm, and low rpm. You just need to pay more attention to the sounds in each gear. Also lastly but not least, its nice to see you keep your hands in one place and not getting frantic between turns and shifts.

@@falcon1209 As someone who has been in the hair loss space for a couple years (not by choice), your comment does not make sense at all. It absolutely is preventative. There's two parts to hair loss. There's finasteride which is the pesticide against hair loss and there's minoxidil which is the fertilizer for hair growth. If you just use finasteride you will very very likely keep what you have and if you use both you will very likely experience very good regrowth.

Where you catch back up a bit leading to the corners and then having to brake so much harder shows the difference as he immediately leaves you again as you have to build back up speed where he's carrying his through more consistently. I'm so glad u got some coaching under ur belt. This and getting advice and insight from other professional driver will really help u push ur driving skills. Best part about low power light cars are that u can push hard and really gain these driving skills and VD knowledge since the cars lap time is way more effected by it. Like u said u can't just put down some power to make up lap time. Every detail counts and that what's makes a truly fast driver fast. That's why F1 drivers start in go karts. U learn so much about the nitty gritty things that make u fast.

I just do iracing, but I learned really quick that braking isn’t just for slowing down, but for rotating the car. I’m hoping to buy a cheap little BRZ to start tracking soon to see if anything I do in the sim translates to the real thing. Great video!

Amazing take on how good a driver you are. Race craft is what we all learnt in this video, and I think we all know it is not that easy.😮
