Hey everyone Rho here! Today we're kicking off our ranking of the Primarch Horus Heresy journey's. Which Primarch's story had the most trials, triumph and tragedy?
Spoiler Warning to begin as today we will be mentioning events from across the Horus Heresy. As always I really recommend you read the stories for yourself first without spoilers as that's the best way to enjoy the lore for yourself!

I have to disagree with Kurze "not affecting the Heresy much." Without him, The Lion wouldn't have been held up and would have made it to Terra in time for the Siege. He's also the reason Sanguinius, Guilliman, and the Lion realize the Emperor is still alive, thus sending the Angel to Terra and his eventual battle with Horus. Plus him taking Vulkan captive leads directly to Vulkan reaching Terra. But something else people forget to consider: he saves Lorgar on Istvaan. If he'd let Corax kill Lorgar, the traitors would be down one of their most powerful psykers and their spiritual leader in Chaos. Not only that, but they wouldn't have gotten a demon-elevated Angron, and Lorgar wouldn't have been able to drag Fulgrim out of the Warp and back into the Heresy (he'd still be in that palace with N'Kari). So he definitely had a massive effect on the outcome of the Heresy, he was just acting on his own madness and reasoning instead of directly trying to influence it like Horus or Lorgar.

I really would have loved to see more of Gulliman's reaction when they were acting as support to the Alpha legion. the moment when guilliman declared he'd never work with them again.

While Horus was absent for most of the middle of the Heresy, his start and finish are so phenomenally strong, as to ultimately make him my farvorite Primarch. The best of them.

Imagine omegon was cypher. It would kinda make sense. Sneaky, untraceable and his need to speak to the emperor. Maybe to speak to his father. Working behind the lines and never taking a side but the side of the imperium

The crappiest story arcs (beside Ferrus for obvious reasons) are Leman for the loyals and Fulgrim for the traitors. They both do nothing besides destroying their own legions for no reason (it was quite criminal that what Russ tried attacking in Trisolian was 100% for nothing)

While yes, they both hurt their Legion (in very different ways) they are both great storylines.

@@Kristian.B.Kristiansen I think they are a great waste. Fulgrim is interesting until he kills Ferrus, then he is just insufferable (and his legion does nothing). Leman Russ story does not make any sense. After Prospero, where he loses one fourth of his legion (the ultramarines lose way more in calth), the wolves do nothing at all until they got ambushed by the alfa legion... being about three years between both events. Later on, they do nothing again FOR YEARS (there are just two main war actions known, Daverant, which we do not know what is it about, and Vannaheim, where they lose a planet to the Iron Warriors after destroying its industry). Then is when they attack in Trisolian achieving absolutely nothing (they do not slow down the traitors, they don't uncover any weakness in Horus that the Emperor could later use).

So if you compare the wolves with the dark angels or the ultramarines (the other loyal legions that were neither at terra nor at istvaan), what is their excuse? The dark angels have Thramas and the Ultramarines Calth (and imperius secundus storyline), meaning that two traitor legions (at least) were fully commited there to prevent the loyals joining in Terra. Nobody was needed to prevent the space wolves do shit, for whatever the reason (lack of a dedicated BL author, perhaps). It is very sad for me, as I am SW, but it is what it is.

@@andresperedo1275 You are fundamentally right about Russ and the 6th. They spend the Heresy being Horus's "useful idiots" against Magnus, not accomplishing much militarily and failing to stop Horus or help the Emperor miserably in that doomed attack. All true. I really loved that. I like the Grim ironic tragedy of "The Emperors executioners" completely failing him in the Ultimate test of a civil war. High tier drama. As for Fulgrim... can't agree there, as I love Traitor Fulgrim a lot.

@@Kristian.B.Kristiansen The issue is not that it would be a drama to fail, it is that it does not make sense and/or it is poorly explained. If Alaxxes would be immediatly after Prospero, then I will better understand why Russ is so lost. If, after regaining confidence after Alaxxes, the wolves would have some relevant triumphs acting their way, that would have lead better to the events in Wolfsbane. If the wound that Russ did to Horus would have play any role at all in the final fight, the actions of the wolves would have been rewarded. But as it is written, when you combine all the bits, there is no tragic story, but the story of a maniac with an army and no brains. Sadly.

The End and the Death vol. 2. Horus summons his ghost to show off, but Ferrus and Sanguinius takes the opportunity to catch up and talk about the War, the Warp and how the Angel definitely is going to die against Horus but really should try to kill the bastard!

Pls let us get Alpharius back. This will bring an even better journay, trust me. You all know, was it really Alpharius that died at Pluto? Let him come back to declare his loyalty to the Emperor once again, noone believes him, he proofes his worth, infiltrates some Chaos Warbands, gets some Alpha Legion Legionaires back by triggering the "loyal.exe" in their brains yadi yadi yada. Just to let him get back to terra where he *TATATAAAAAA* shows that he was fooling them all again and fights his way to the throne room with hundreds of Alpha Legionaires by his side. Just in the Throne Room the Emperor starts to speak with him, time fades and they have a conversation till the Emperor starts muttering *King, Back, Friend, Friend, Yellow, King, Back*. Alpharius phases back to reality and in the archway stands Constantin Valdor! challanging him to another duell. Epic Fight Scene, Alpharius mocks and taunts Valdor whom just parrys and avoids blows just to get some jabs in. When Alpharius corners him at the stairs to the Emporor Valdor drops to one knee and Alpharius declares that he will take his head like all the heads from his worthless Custodes before just so that Valdor raises up again and declaes "Now i finish what Dorn couldn't" Now all see that Valdor played with Alpharius and his already Primarch-like fighting prowess just multiplied in all the years off exile. "Epic fight scene² with Alpharius showing disbelieve" Then Valdor impales Alpharius with the Apollonian Spear, and says "Not even remorse" (stating to the powers of the apollonian spear to grant truth to the wielder from those it cuts) just to bring out his Miseridordia lunging forward and impaling the Heart of Alpharius. The few remaining Alpha Legionaires get cut down by the ariving Custodes under Trajann Valoris. Valdor rises over the Corps of Alpharius and meets the gaze of Valoris. Fade to black. Next Book Valdor Rises BÄM THATS HOW IT IS DONE! ^^

​@@NoxMortem Then you can always argue that everything is a trick of the Alpha legion, because nothing we know about them is reliable. That trick gets very old very fast, because then anything related with the Alpha legion loss all its value, each of their stories lose any tension they could have a there are zero stakes. It is narratively needed to have a line where you can trust what is going on with the Alpha. The question is where is that line, and I think the Alpharius death is crystal clear: If you don't trust what Omegon says, Sanguinius also sees Alpharius among the dead (and possessed) Primarchs.

The Alpha legion and Alpharius is what happens when you came up with 19 crazy legions and Primarchs and had nothing left creatively. It's super lazy and VERY uninteresting.

These four are definitely the bottom three. Ferrus Manus has no development at all - at best - and the worst kind of development at worst: entirely "Tell", without much (if any) competent "Show". I get the impression that the writers are intimidated by writing for Alpharius/Omegon because there's just no way that the two of them can live up to the hype without being too competent for the setting, and if you portray them as being just as fallible as the rest of the Primarchs... it turns the legion into a joke. GW painted themselves into a corner with the Alpha Legion, and Alpharius/Omegon turn into an ongoing "Tell - don't Show" as well. But they DO get a little bit of "Show", which puts them a bit higher on the list. As for Kurze... I'm not sure we get much development at all with him. But I also don't think Conrad has the kind of story that needs development. He's less a Character and more a Character Study - the descent into Madness and Self-Destruction that comes of a "Self-Fulfilling Prophecy". Either way, he's always been on a track leading to self-destruction, and there's very little evidence he could ever escape it. (Even if he wanted to - which there is very little evidence of as well) He started as a psychopathic monster who believed he was murdering (and worse) in the name of a "Justice" that he could literally foresee, and it ended with him being a psychopathic monster who allowed himself to be murdered to ensure that his "Justice" was proven to be the inevitable path of the Universe. There just isn't much room to develop in those narrow confines, so I'm not entirely sure he fits on a list like this. But we do get a lot more insight into him in the Heresy - more than the first three on the list combined - so if he has to be on the list, 16 is the place I'd be content with.

The drama, the warps madness, the reversal of power, love and restraint dynamics between Horus and the Emperor, Second Person Horus! the Angels phenomenal death, Lokens and Abaddon’s roles... Only some few "little people" chapters and a bit too much Dark Angels stand out as less than stellar.

@@Kristian.B.Kristiansen So, I'm only referring to the last three books. Yeah, I liked The Angel's death; it was pure Abnett writing. Loken's story was good. But I would argue that Abbadon did nothing but walk from set piece to piece; the warp madness was cool but did not need to be 1500+ pages to get the point across. Reversal of power? I can't comment on that one, don't know what you're referring to. The drama? Yeah, okay, it was dramatic, but again, it didn't need to be 1500+ pages. 2nd person Horus? Uhhh yeah ok it was fine but didn't do much for me.
