The reason the colors came out muddy is due to the primary colors you chose. Contrary to belief the actual 'red' primary color is lighter and pinker, and the 'blue' is a lot lighter almost a cyan.

@@Alexaviera28 actually, black is not used in watercolors as it most black pigments are opaque which kinda defeats the purpose of watercolor

I really appreciate the fact that you use japanese nihonga supplies for watercolor. but could I encourage you to try using a more appropriate brush for defining large areas? it's called a saishiki, and along with menso it is one of the most basic brush to use. a third one would be the komadori, used for gradation by only loading it with water and going over edges of color in order to soften them. I'm sure you already knew all that, but I just stumbled upon this video and thought it was really neat that you use japanese painting furnitures, so I wanted to give you a heads up. cheers!

I'm really enjoying water colour painting/doodlings and I would like to eventually do some to decorate my pen pal letters so I have been doing some research into purchasing the brushes and paint and just like you said, I figured that I should buy the primary colors until I become better and confident and then look at expanding, just in case I'm really bad at it and then wasted money on it, good tip though 👍

My first watercolor palette was a modest 12 half pan Koi palette. You are so right about starting with a small palette for color theory. It was so fun experimenting mixing my own shades until I got the color I desired. It is a great learning experience on what to expect when you mix one color with another. :D Great review. the altoid tin is such an inspired idea. Maybe it will fit 6 half pans for a bigger variety for travel? :D

I am getting the 30 ShinHan tomorrow, but they are to be used from the tube for a course I am taking here on youtube. I was really trying to figure out (with no half pans), how to round out Decadent Pies, LOL! And I get to try something new. I could not believe they are 2.50 each.I enjoyed your sketchbook too! However, I just wanted to point out: you were good and you only got better. :-) Still an admirer of your clay work and won over by your painting and more, I am ;-) Stay awesome ^^
