This practice is my morning ritual. I feel so alive afterwards. The moving meditative journey is hypnotic and a mental clarity. It’s an absolute full-body/mind high. Exhilarating. It has saved my body, mind, soul from the inner turmoil I’ve experienced the majority of my life. I am 32, and almost a year of consistent practice has completely transformed me. I hope to study in Mysore one day with R. Sharath Jois. “The teacher will appear when the student is ready.” I practice and pray every day that that day will come soon 🙏🏼 😊 Happy practicing, my fellow yogis!

Wow, this brings back so many memories. In the 00s, after the birth of my second child, I started practicing Bikram yoga. I was naturally flexible so I progressed very quickly and soon grew bored of the same 26 poses. Yoga blogs introduced me to Ashtanga. At the time there was only one Ashtanga teacher in Atlanta, John Meredith, so I began practicing with him. I still remember the very first class i took 'Intro to Primary'. My arms have never been so tired and sore. But I was hooked. I practiced reguarly with him for about a year and a half. The binds and bends came easily to me, but strength was always a struggle (as were mula bandha and uddiyada bandha!). I was able to jump in and out of poses, but never did I ever land as lightly and with such control as these yogis. I was just trying out second series when circumstances dictated that i had to return to full-time work. The studio was about thirty minutes away from my house, and full Primary takes about an hour and a half, so practicing with John was pretty much a half-day commitment which I was unable to sustain. I switched to distance running with yoga at home as a supplement to my running. I tried to keep up Primary at home, but with two young kids and without the yoga community, I just couldn't. Fifteen years later and I have lost much of my flexibility due to running injuries and frozen shoulder after an injury at the gym. But watching this lovely practice brings back all the good memories of that time in my life.
@catherineshaw11223 жыл бұрын
The Bikram 26 pose class is the beginner's class. He learned from Ghosh, and Ghosh also had an intermediate and advanced level series. Tony Sanchez has resources to teach them all. But to say the 26 pose class was boring so you had to change to another school is odd. It's the same as Ashtanga yoga primary series in that it's where one starts, but more levels do follow that.

I know your comment is old, but having dealt with frozen shoulder I know how painful and frustrating that is. For me, what worked was getting back to Ashtanga, because the sun salutes opened up the chest and shoulders. My frozen shoulder was a result of collapsing into my chest when I slept on my side. The muscles had shortened. By stretching the chest, the problem disappeared. I hope this helps someone.

If all this looks unbelievably advanced and something you could never do, take heart. I started out not being able to do much of anything, but after years of astanga I could do 98% of what you see here as well as these guys do it. The key is practice 6 days a week, eat very little, and cut out running and other activities that tighten muscles. No form of yoga will make you flexible and strong faster than astanga. On the other hand, you must know how to practice to avoid hurting yourself, which is a real possibility with this yoga.

Yoga is a gift from God to mankind. Through Yoga practise, anyone can work towards physical, mental, moral and spiritual perfection. This video demonstrates a form of Hatha Yoga, which is a physical form of Yoga involving stretches, balances, and other physical challenges. This type of Yoga is probably the most familiar to the general public, although there are many other types of Yoga, such as meditation, Pranayama (control of breathing), and chanting. In fact, anything can be Yoga, if it is done yogically, that is with full concentration on the present moment and action, full devotion and humility, and no thought for the future results. Yoga as such is the true religion, and all religious practises have aspects of Yoga integrated within them. A particular method of Hatha Yoga is shown here, call Ashtanga Yoga. This is perhaps the most vigorous and arduous of Hatha practises. It aims to stretch and flex all parts of the body in all directions. As practitioners advance, it introduces difficult internal muscle controls, breathe controls, a reining in and control of the senses, until the whole being is poised and controlled, including the mind, which is stilled and one pointed. Dedicated and determined practise of this Yoga give a strong lithe youthful body which is never over muscular or disproportionally developed. The lungs breathe deep and strong. The cardiovascular system is smooth and steady. Digestion and elimination is rendered quick and complete. The senses become acute. The mind becomes sharp and concentrated, and memory is steadily improved. The practitioner gradually realises his or her fullest potential. I send my love and respect to the late great guru featured in this film, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, and to his guru Sri Krishnamacharya, who both together created this ingenious system. Let us practise fully and daily and all is coming.

Ashtanga is at the root of original yoga pracitice and a very disciplined routine. For most, the primary series will suffice for the rest if their lives, and that is wonderful. Part of our practice is letting go of comparison and developing your practice for yourself and improve for yourself. Pattabhi Jois and many of his compatriots in India will not allow you to continue beyond Surya Namaskar it your form and breath is without mastery. The Astanga series, in its disciplined and most pure form, is very demanding, esp as performed here with demonstration of palms together and high dristi.

Well, despite the disclaimer/warning, I'm still going to use this at home. I'm moving to a part of the country where the closest yoga studio is an hour away, and there's one girl locally who does classes at the Y, but I'm kind of a snob about my practice. There's no guarantee she practices this kind of yoga. I've been to classes that leave me unfulfilled in terms of relaxation and physical demand. I'm glad this is up. It will help my home practice.

No words for this. This was the first time I did this practice in my life. I am completely new to yoga, I have been practicing only since last december, nothing before. This class was amazing. Of course, I was not able to do all the poses, and I cannot do the fancy, strong transitions. But, best 80 minutes for a long time!

haha, naah, I did not, also, I am not sure I will ever be able to... I have a very bad left ankle, which prevents me from jumps. So I step back and step up! :)

Én is ezzel a videóval kezdtem, aztán találtam egy termet, ahol hagyományos módon oktatnak budapesten heti 6szor minden reggel mindenki a saját ütemében csinálja a sorozatot, ameddig megy neki addig az ászanáig gyakorol. Nekem sokat segített a közös mégis egyéni gyakorlás

This is not meant as a class to begin with. This is solely for demonstration. But if you finished, you must be practicing already? This is a very advanced practice. The students here spent years getting to this level. Be careful.

Natalie, this practice happens over time. So, if you start slowly with modified positions and transitions it's VERY pleasant and relaxing. Joyful even. In my opinion, if you aren't smiling you aren't doing it right.

Wow, what discipline these practioners have. I have attempted this practice many times and each time is different. Today a feeling of frustration over came me as I was not as strong as other times but with persistence and dedication all is possible! I will aim at making this a consistent, if not daily practice! Thank you for the upload, metta and namaste 🌹

Kelly Watts for us it's free from since time immemorial , passed on from one sage to another and to masses. At 4 i joined group of kids who were trained by our guru for free for few years. The first gift i received from my dad was a book on yoga at 8. For me it's look so odd to see how it's been commercialized. 40 EUR / hour !!?! For one session... that too by those who just treat it like a gymnastics.

ASMRyouVEGANyet? No its not racist. It's an observation and an accurate one. That is a sad trait of much of white culture. (Btw I am of pure Aryan features, and pure Aryan ethnicity except for part Cherokee. I have observed thus trait of my ethnicity since early childhood sadly.)

I know of other places that have it all wrong too. I had to walk of a class when we were instructed to do jumping Jack's with rubber bands around our ankles... the "teachers" making it up as they go along. Needless to say... but I'm saying it... I was asked to not come back.
