I think the reason the HD remaster works so well is that prime was built as a game that wowed you because it looked good. So, making an entire remaster with the ultimate goal of looking good is the pinnacle of great ideas for the game.

@Tchiko. Жыл бұрын
Didn't you notice the absence of the dynamic lighting of the laser beams? In the original the lighting of the firing is a major part of the visual character: with each shot you can easily follow the laser beam with your eyes because of the lighting of the scenery around which moves with the laser, even in daylight. With the charge beam or wave beam it's even brighter, each weapon have its lighting color. In that original method it provides a non stop dynamic firework show, and it contributes to the sensorial and claustrophobic atmosphere because each beam lighting gives proximity to the scenery, a physical presence of it, it allowes to feel the matter around us, its volume. We also can light some dark corners this way, it’s interactive. It contributes to the pleasure of shooting often in Metroid Prime, the feeling of incarnate the cybernetic bounty hunter with her crazy powers of lights. The original game was designed to emphasize that constant dynamic shooting aspect to fuel that feels experience. I understand the limitations of the new gorgeous lighting system, more static because precalculated in large part. But as a result it’s a different experience, less fun I would say.

7:32 This isn't "Someone somewhere" doing this. Nintendo haver always done this with a good amount of their games. I know some people will point me to the Zelda remakes on 3DS and a handful of other titles. Generally speaking, however, when they port or remake a game to a new system, they tend to *ONLY* credit the staff that specifically worked on that remake, and then collectively credit the old staff as "Based on the original work of _______". Like I said, they make exceptions, but generally this is how they do it. I'm not defending it, just that people feeling outraged about this now really haven't paid attention to the way Nintendo has handled things in the last few decades… The Super Mario Advance remakes do not credit Koji Kondo, for example, even though all of the music in these remakes is based on his work. They instead credit the composers and sound engineers who converted his music and composed the few original tunes for these remakes. Sometimes you will see a couple of old staff members from the original credited in the remake as well, but this only tends to happen when that person worked on both versions. As an example, David Wise was credited in both versions of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze for Wii U and Switch. This is because he wrote a new Funky Kong tune during the end credits of the Switch version (something he confirmed on his Twitter).

@tsukimilo Жыл бұрын
I'd be surprised if they didn't follow up with a Metroid Prime 2 remaster, the controls are exactly the same except for a few new weapons and even then, seeing as how they just reused the soundtrack and basically didn't touch anything storywise, with the engine already done for this game, it's applying the new coat of paint to the game, not saying it's easy, but it's a lot less work left than what they had to do for Prime 1 remaster. With Prime 3 I expect an HD treatment, the textures were already better because of the hardware; with how much work the controls and gimmicks would need to be ported it'd be a lot more of work compared to the first two games which they can't really afford with Prime 4 in the making and them wanting to release it within the Switch's lifetime.

Having played this game for the first time since the original came out in 2002, I love this game to bits. My only real complaint is: some of these areas are really freaking dark! And I remember in the GameCube version that you could illuminate areas with your beam shots alone. You can't do that in the remaster, for some strange reason, and so I'm left fumbling around in the dark, which is the bane of my existence in video games!

In terms of graphics, the remastered version is great. But there are some subtle changes in the game physics that makes Samus movement and interaction with the scenario weird. Samus movement in the OG Metroid Prime was on point and was something that worried me when I saw this game and definitely Samus movements are not so precise in the Remastered version as they are in the OG Prime. Samus movements feels floaty and not precise as they are in the Gamecube version, adding to that the weird collision in some platforms in which Samus now have problem to climb when holding the stick forward. The target lock system is also messed up. The gamecube version provides more control on the strafe and target lock as the buttons were analog and that is lost in this remastered version. I've been playing both GCN and Switch versions side to side and still the Gamecube version feels better in gameplay. But if you want to take a Tallon IV tour, definitely play the Remastered version.

As someone who has played 2d Metroid but never Prime until this new remaster, I think I prefer the new doors, just because they stick a little more closely to the way the doors feel in the 2d games. The emphasis on colored shielding, for me, makes it more plausible that the doors would open due to Samus’ energy blasts. When they look all metal and stuff with very little shielding, I just think “stop shooting the door! Use a keycard, or a handle, or something!”

I've watched like 20 reviews of the Remaster, it's beautiful seeing this much coverage. The game is everything we could've ever wanted. Seeing it run on emulation in 4k shows how insane it actually is. It scales up effortlessly and looks like a current gen console title. Please, Nintendo, please... don't just port Prime 2 and 3. PLEASE give them the same treatment (they probably won't).

Y'know, I'm a little curious about one thing. We know the first Prime game went with a more realistic look for Samus herself, a look this remaster honestly blows out of the water, when I looked at a screenshot of Samus in the scene we see her face, at first glance, it looked like a picture of a real person, it was honestly beautiful. But the next Prime games give Samus a more saturated look, more of a cartoon animated vibe, if that makes sense? She looks more like how she did in Zero Mission in those. And my question is, will they preserve that direction in the remasters of Prime 2 and 3, or will they stay on course with the look the gave Samus in this game?

Excited to see Metroid Prime becoming more easily available to purchase. With the GameCube library skyrocketing in price and the Wii U eShop closing, it was looking like an expensive series to get into. I'll admit to panic buying the Trilogy on the Wii U eShop last year before it disappears in March. I agree that this straddles the line between a remaster and a remake. They reportedly used the Wii version's source code, but a lot of the visual assets are new - or at least heavily modified - and there are some other changes, as you've pointed out. Speaking of, the doors seem to be a classic argument of form versus function. I agree the old doors look better, but I also agree the new doors are easier to spot and provide better visual signposting the player. What I love about your videos in general is that, instead of just pointing out the change and commenting with an opinion, you actually stop to consider why it's changed, what the developers' intentions were, and what impact that has. Credits, I fully agree with you. Yes, inclusing the original team makes the credits scroll longer (looking at you, Sonic Colours Ultimate) but it's the right thing to do. Game developers typically don't get royalties, you get paid your salary, maybe a one-off bonus if the game does well critically / commercially, but that's it. You don't have any ownership, stake or claim. So there's no financial consideration. But yeah, throughout this review, your love and admiration for this game shines through and I am so ridiculously happy for you. I'm waiting for the physical release, but I'm definitely going to be picking this up. :)

I wonder if the credits thing might be a legal issue. If those staff aren't at the company anymore, it might technically not be legal to put their names in there without specifically getting their consent. That would probably be possible, but don't know how that stuff works.
@PianistTanooki Жыл бұрын
That could be it, but I doubt it. Like he pointed out, Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask credited the original staff, such as the late Hiroshi Yamauchi, president of Nintendo until 2002, who left the company in 2005. Those, however, are exceptions. Nintendo doesn't normally credit the original staff when releasing a remake. They only credit the staff that worked on that specific new version, not the original. The Super Mario Advance games don't credit their original staff, such as Koji Kondo who worked on all the music for the originals. They instead only credit the people who converted the old music to the GBA, along with the few new compositions these people worked on. They did the same thing with Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, Luigi's Mansion 3DS, and many, many others.

I do have to say, just doing a copout of the original team in the Credits was a pretty scummy move. Nintendo and Mercury Steam did this with Dread as well. If Retro does this again with Prime 4, I will be honestly disappointed on their disingenuous actions. Regarding the doors, I think they look great! Yeah, they don't match the original, but the way they were designed here not only still looks good in my view, but it makes the doors stand out more in darker environments.

7:33 Why is it so important to give credit to the original GameCube team who made original Metroid Prime when they had 0 hand in making this Remaster? It's the Remaster team that made it. The original staff who made the original was referenced and that's good enough cause the orignal staff designed it. But that's it. Don't read more into it than you should. The original team wasn't there to put this Remaster together and the original team was shown in original game credits. Get over it.
@diamondbracelette4 ай бұрын
I'll strengthen your argument and then refute it. In film remakes they also don't credit the original filmmakers and cast. But they would credit the original author of the novel both films were based on. The original devs of any remastered game are more like the original authors of the game bc their original work is literally being used still. Not just adapted or reimagined. Even a full remake would blur the lines to not credit these devs, but it would be a lot closer to the film analogy of a full remake of a film. In that case a single shout-out to the original team makes more sense. But not here.
