Twickenham's volume always kicked up a notch when he got the ball. The South Africa 36-0 hiding was a great game where he kept fighting and punching until his hamstring gave up. Really had an all court game by that point - kicking, defence, catching alongside his unbelievable step and acceleration. The Barbarians game, his final Twickenham one, felt like a fantasy with the world cup winning Springboks against a team with Giteau, Nonu, Conrad Smith, and Jason Robinson. I still can't believe I got to see Nonu, Smith, and Robinson combine and he really showed how much of a legend he was with those 2

The crazy thing is by time he got to Union he had lost some of his speed and agility compared to when he was playing League at Wigan in the late 90's. The guy was a phenomenon.

And this is just the second half of his dual-code career… some of his runs and tries for Wigan in rugby league were incredible as well.

More incredible tries when he played for Wigan Warriors, beat the best of NRL in their own back yard. Such a dynamic player ⚡

@@kuikyroje for sure I see a lot of Robinson in Cheslin and I mean that as a huge compliment. Same with Shane Williams. Cheslin's probably got a wider side step while Robinson that shotgun blast acceleration but these are the guys you show up to rugby to see.

The best back three player England ever had, every single time he had the ball in hand the volume went up, he could run faster sideways than most people could in a straight line. I was six when he scored the try against Australia, but I'll never forget my uncle leaping out of his chair and nearly putting his head through the ceiling and watching him scream come on into the Camera
@TomFarrow-oo5wm9 күн бұрын
He was a remarkable athlete and by the time of 2003 he'd developed a real instinct for union too. He'd still be an incredible winger now as his 100m was still better than Jonny May's or Christian Wade's 100m times. And that's ignoring that his real talent was the step and acceleration over the first 20m.

Never get tired of that run against Wales in the QF. Turned the game around.

The greatest off the mark, show of hand, acceleration and courage there's ever been in a winger/fullback. Still feel he doesn't get the credit he deserves. Walks into any greatest world XV easily.
@samacw9 күн бұрын
He changed team's tactics, because they knew that any kick his way could get returned 30 metres or more. Lewsey added to that with his pace and willingness to run and it really helped England in the territorial game in that golden era.

Only three people I’ve seen with a similar step - Cheslin, Shane Williams, and David Duckham who regularly dummied the cameraman- which happens here at around 3:42 Honourable mentions to Phil Bennett, Danie Gerber, Blanco, Serevi, Carlos S, and Jonah who in fairness was altogether a total one-off in other ways as well.
