Highlights of Michael Owen during his Ballon d'Or winning season in 2000-2001 for Liverpool & England - he was simply unstoppable during his prime, a deadly finisher and insane pace put fear into the best defenders in the world. Where does PRIME Michael Owen rank amongst the great strikers of the past?

Because i was young and didnt understand serious injuries he went from being my favourite player to my most despised player. Dont outstay your welcome. A lightning fast lethal finisher in his prime, functional skills focused entirely on blasting a hole in your goalkeeepers net.

*The tragedy of Michael Owen is, he only knew one way to play: Race at defenders with supersonic speed, completely leave them flat footed or lying in the dust; the goalkeeper mesmerized, while he rounds them all and slots the ball into the net.* The crowds went wild and his Liverpool, Real Madrid (initially at least) and England managers loved it too. They kept encouraging him to play that way and unfortunately they never trained him in other aspects such as, one-two passes, crossing, heading, fake runs etc, nor did he learn himself. Speed running was the only way he knew. Unfortunately, doing this day in and day out blew his hamstrings and he was never the same and could not regain that speed. He therefore slowly devolved to mediocrity since he knew no other way to play, unlike other speed demons in their prime like Arjen Robben and Cristiano Ronaldo. Other speedy players knew other styles besides racing at defenders and leaving them in the dust and scoring, while poor Michael Owen only knew that one way. Poor guy even hired speed trainers, but his legs never allowed it again. I blame Liverpool and also Real Madrid for not fully developing him and overusing him in his youth and completely blowing his legs out. He could have been a legend and a world-class player, talked about for generations to come, if only he had better managers, in his formative phase. 😪

What on earth are you rambling on about. Blowing his legs out, you must have been on the gear when writing that . Haha

@@AshHalls it appears you don't know what you're talking about. Did you not see how many hamstring injuries he had, how many knee injuries he had? Did you not see how he deteriorated after that? He was great player no doubt, but he was a one-trick pony.

To say he is a one trick pony, you didn’t watch him play. You are the clueless one my friend. He could run in behind, goal poach, and his build up play was still good. Otherwise how can he play for 3 of the biggest clubs in the world. Obvious his career was ruined by injury, but to say it’s because he always ran fast hahah sorry mate, but that’s too funny

@@AshHalls snickering, laughing and mocking does not make you right. I have seen him play many times, for club and country. Of course he has done a few other things, but majority of it is speed running. You have your opinion and I have mine, that's all there is to it. There's no need for us to convince each other. Take care and goodbye.

Yeah because English players win the Ballon d'Or every season - journalists from around 100 countries vote and they all have a pact to vote the English player every year!

@@LJC1419 I mean Owen was decent but being decent player + being english pop star > being great player. Raul was robbed in 2001, that's a fact

@ungurmaour4301 what are you talking about him being English, what does that have to do with anything he was unbelievable, you obviously never watched from when he burst onto the scene and how good he was when he was at Liverpool. Your the reason KZbin needs to monitor comments.

He was a great player for 1-2 seasons of his prime, but considering the other players to win the trophy, he's easily the worst player to ever win the Ballon d'Or. He relied purely on his athleticism and instinct. The garbage that comes out of his mouth nowadays highlights how little he knows about football.

Im a United Supporter since the late 80's. And even I know thats a crock lol. And despite him playing for united for a short time he will always be a liverpool player in my eyes. but at his peak he was better than any player to play in Liverpool since lol.. outrages talent
