Lifelong Chicago native here. I'm in my 60s now. I resented Boston and Bird as the Bulls struggled. Now, after living thru Jordan, et al, and watching these videos, I have new respect and admiration for Bird and Boston. Funny how age mellows. Kudos to Larry Bird. Helluva player.

I keep writing it. But please keep an eye out for the game where Bird literally picked up a guy and threw him into the first row. I swear I saw this game as a kid and haven't been able to find it since. That game the refs were letting fouls go. Guys were literally hitting him, smack him, nothing was being called. Late in the game I think Larry knew he had to take matters into his own hands and picked up the guy and literally threw him into the crowd (first row of seats). He didn't get called for a foul on it either! LMAO! I've never seen anything like it before or since. Back then you only got to see replays on the sports segment on the local news and it was either on there or on the replay (sometimes they played a repeat of the game on late night TV) and I had my dad watch it because I couldn't believe it, but my dad saw it too. I would love if you could find it. I just love your videos. One of the few channels that I drop everything and just watch when I get the notice. Keep up the great work!!!

If it existed, we would've seen it by now. Memory is a funny thing and people oftentimes recall things that never happen. There's even a term for it when a *crowd* of people believe they witnessed something that never occurred; the Mandela effect.

And it was nice of them to reciprocate and make Bird a Hall of Famer, because without his teammates he may not have gotten in. When the guys you say Bird made Hall of Famers got old, Bird didn't win any more titles. Bird had better teammates than Jordan and won half the titles. Bird is great. I have him as #3 on my list. But don't get him confused with the GOAT, Mchael Jordan.

Great video!! People forget how good Bird was!!! As a rookie Bird was the main reason Boston went from 29 wins to a 61 win season = a 32 game improvement. Bird won ROY by a huge margin over Magic and was 4th in the MVP. Then for the next 8 seasons in the MVP = before the heel surgeries - Bird was 2,2,2,1,1,1,3 and 2nd again in the MVP = that is dominating the league!!!!

I like this. Granted the highlights between MJ and Bird are before MJ's greatness and Bird's retirement, everyone should be able to conclude they were both great! I have Bird as my all time best #3. I can only imagine ludicrous combos for all NBA teams with him at the 3 position regardless of the year. I have always been interested in how Larry would transition into Jackson's triangle, knowing he didn't have Pipps athletic talent, but Phil made it work with Shaq, so you know that Larry could have made it work as well! I like to imagine, (and I know it's controversial) Gary Payton, MJ, Ppp, Bird, and, Olajuan as a my ultimate starting 5 based on their versatility, (except the glove) he's not posting up, but that team should have the ability to contend with a team made up of Kobe, Magic, James, Duncan, and, (insert center here). Yes Kobe @1 Johnson @2 James @3 Duncan @4 and whoever you want @5 (Kareem, Shaq, Russell, Wilt, I don't care) I think my first team beats my second team. You can add bench players and maybe make a case, but I think my fantasy starting 5 would win a whole lot of games! The defense on my 5 is legendary! And the agility! I know Magic could play all 5 positions and I'm giving that second team LeBron who potentially could play all 5 positions along with any center that's ever played minus "The Dream" and Duncan! I just see my dream team dominating on both sides. Either way, these 2 starting 5's would be very hard to beat. I see guys like Steph as 6th men all time based on how they play regardless of era, if you can't be multi dimensional than you're coming off the bench as a gadget I'm sorry!

I think Larry Bird should say: "HELP" because he got his ass whipped with a 10-0 deficit to MJ in Scoring Titles. Larry and the Celtics beat the Chicago Bulls in 1986 & 1987. Michael Jordan had 49 pts in Game 1 and 63 pts in Game 2. Playing against a team that was 40-1 in Boston during the 1985/86 season. Also, they had 5 Hall of Famers. Boston was the overwhelming favourites to win both series, and they did.

McHale would be a HOFer no matter what, I don't think he could carry a team but I think he would be a more prolific scorer on a team without Bird, that's people's opinion who played against him also. The Man of 1000 Moves was an earned nickname.

I keep thinking that if Boston couldn't sign Bird before the 79 draft, the Lakers would have drafted him instead of Magic. And the Lakers stocked with hall of famers already would have crushed everyone in sight for over a decade. It wouldn't even be fair. But Bird had to carry another team just like he did in Indiana State. Boston had a lot of old timers and a dearth of talent. There was a lot of criticism on GM Auerbach. And history would have been different if Red couldn't sign Bird on time. Red may not have his stellar reputation if the Celtics lost Bird and Red had to get a compensatory pick in the 79 draft. The Celtics would have fallen into obscurity. If I was Jerry West who was the GM of the Lakers at the time of the 79 draft, I would be tempted to tamper in the negotiations and send a message to Bird that he would be pay him more than anything Boston would do if he just let the deadline pass. If Lakers got caught, they might see a fine and draft picks but WTF you have the best player in the world to play with a team thats fully stocked already. For gods sake, he would be playing with HOFers and not have to carry an entirely bad team. Can you imagine Bird in that Lakers line up? OMG. That would be best team in the history of NBA hands down. Unfortunately for Bird, he has to carry the second worst team in the league. But as you say, he brought them a championship in two years! TWO years. Unbelievable. Nobody, in the history of the league did that. Not even close. The GOAT of the GOATs.
@Davivd2

You went too far when you disrespected the Celtics and said that those guys were not hall of famers. Robert Parish was legit. Dennis Johnson was an allstar in Seattle. Charles Barkley says Kevin Mchale is the greatest post scorer that he ever played against. We can dig up footage of anyone dropping easy passes. Every player does it. That doesn't mean that they were carried. I fucking hate Danny Ainge with a passion. He's a dirty cry baby. But he was a great bench player and clutch as clutch gets for the Trailblazers and the Suns.

My take, which I don't expect anyone to care about, is that in the _sport_ of basketball, the greatest _athlete_ of all time is Michael Jordan. In the _game_ of basketball, the greatest _player_ of all time is Larry Bird. My father would pick Bill Russell, which I'm OK with. Russell didn't have amazing stats, other than rebounds (which were inflated in his era), but he changed the course of games just by being on the court. Bird did that as well, of course, but Russell managed to get nearly a dozen championships, and wasn't stopped by even Wilt Chamberlain. Aside from the GOAT debate, I think it's impossible to dispute that Bird was the most complete basketball player ever. If only he weren't so daft off the court, and had hired someone to work on his mother's driveway (or whatever it was), and hadn't lost his temper in a bar. No telling what he could have accomplished without persistent injuries and with another half dozen years on the court.

Keep in mind Jordan didn't have any good players his rookie year andup till his 3rd year No way Jordan could have turned into Hall of Famers, Dave Corzine more like Floor Corzine. Bird Had DJ that won a championship with Seattle before he became a Celtic. Robert Parrish was a better than average center, Danny Ainge was a really good player and ended up on championship type teams after Boston, Portland, the Suns. Kevin McHale was a great addition to the Celtics in Bird's 2nd year. when they won it all.

Yes. And got swept. Besides that, i think that stat line goes more in Larry Bird's favor! If a rookie can score 63 points on a 5 hall of famers team, in their absolute peak best year, that also means that team wasn't THAT great. Specially on defense! A team with two 7 footers, but Bird was the best rebounder. Team with a finals MVP point guard Dennis Johnson, yet Larry was the best assist provider. And was also the best shooter. Bird was the only real hall of famer of that Celtics team. He just grabbed 5 seats on the hall of fame. The Greatest Valuable Player ever.
