Beautiful work! It’s not easy! Thanks a million for the advice on primer! I purchased a gallon of Gray Kilz water based primer at Home Depot and glad I did it has been my go to primer!! Does shellac primer or spray tend to be sticky and shiny to you? Do you think it alters the feel of the furniture surface slightly? That’s been my experience and concern. And I thoroughly prep and clean pieces prior to painting. Perhaps you can address that at some point along with “paint and primer in one” paints. Than you again for your videos!! btw I like the way you applied the topcoat! (That’s a whole other video)
@SabsRehabs3 жыл бұрын
I don't really buy into the all in one paints. I still prime and topcoat for extra protection. White shellac to me feels very much like water based primer. The clear shellac definitely changes the was the surface feels. It makes it smooth and glass like, so you for sure need to scuff sand before applying paint no matter what paint you are using. I don't feel like shellac primers dry sticky though.

I just did our posts for the house outside and I use Bullseye 123 it looked good and then I put the Finish coat on it and it bled I had to use the stripper take it all back off resend it down to bare wood and then I use Ben's primer and it worked it was a very costly mistake I would never use Bullseye 123 primer ever for anything love your peace it turned out beautiful thank you for your tips on primers

I hate doing double work. I used to always use 123 primer as well and it kept bleeding on me. Now I only use it in certain cases. Shellac is definitely the way to go.
@BibbyLou992 жыл бұрын
Awesome video Sab, just wondering with the black dresser you did, I could see some (what I would call) cracks within where you had painted black. Is that also due to not priming?

Great tutorial, you're very thorough and I appreciate that.. I almost painted a vanity that color, I wish I did now seeing yours.. I love that piece you painted.. So now I have a question. Why did you use the white primer on the whole thing instead of the (big gun) clear primer? What's the difference besides the color? I need to know for my own understanding.. Thank you so much for sharing with us all you're so sweet 💜 God bless
@SabsRehabs3 жыл бұрын
The clear shellac is by far the best to block bleed through. I find myself using it more and more. The only down fall of the clear shellac is there is a 4 hour wait time to paint and it can be hard to find at my local hardware stores right now. So, I try to get away with the white shellac if I can. If I am going to distress or the piece looks like a bad bleeder I skip the white and go straight for the clear shellac now.

Hi, I love all the gorgeous colors you paint your pieces. Most flippers advise sticking to neutral colors in order to sell. Do you already have clients for your colorful pieces? If not, do the more risky colors sell well in your area?
@SabsRehabs3 жыл бұрын
For this piece I had a client. I do pretty bold colors and to date everything has sold that I have done. A few pieces have sold months later but for the most part my pieces sell pretty quickly. I also sell on Etsy so my pieces can go anywhere.

i don’t really have an outside space to work in that isn’t in direct sunlight so using the shellac based primer doesn’t seem like an option but I do have the zinsser bin 123. the piece I am doing now is an old old Martha Washington cabinet. Do you think 3 coats of the primer would be the equivalent to the shellac based one??
@SabsRehabs3 жыл бұрын
No. If it is water based and not shellac and not a light piece you take the risk of it bleeding. You can try the bin 123 but in my experience coat 3 will also bleed if coat one of primer does.

What kind of brushes (type and size) or roller heads (kind of knap or foam and size) do you use for each different kind of primer?
@SabsRehabs Жыл бұрын
I prefer to spray or roll my primer. I spray my water based through my gun. I roll in my Bin shellac primer with a microfiber roller. Shellac eventually eats foam rollers, so I use microfiber and lightly sand between coats.

Do you always use chalk paint? I was having trouble with black chalk paint, got frustrated and went over it 2x with Behr interior latex paint. Then did the top coat is the same one you showed here with a little of the black mixed in. Is it okay to use latex on a piece and/or with a water based primer?
@SabsRehabs3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can use latex paint on furniture and with water based primer. I use latex paint sometimes. But I started with chalk paint so I feel most comfortable with it. I will have a video in a few weeks though where I use latex paint. Most of my metallic pieces I do are latex paint.

I am working on a piece now that has bleed through. I had to sand back an area and broke through the existing mahogany finish. I sprayed the spot with shellac, not the whole thing (dark wood, dark paint regretting it now), and started painting. I could see the spot when the paint was wet, but it disappeared once dry. Thought I was good until the first layer of ultra flat Polycrylic . I sprayed it on and not only did that spot show up but the finish also looks like tiger stripes. I used Behr chalked paint also. lightly sanded the poly, thinking that maybe I "missed" those areas with my spray gun (I know it was even when I spayed it though, ugh) and added another coat. Did not work. This piece is for a client, and I'm not certain how to fix it. Should I sand the whole piece back, and start over? Any advice would be very much appreciated. New to your channel, and love your content. Thank you so much.

I would strip and sand back that side of your piece that is bleeding and then clear shellac it, repaint it and seal

I would clean it with a vinegar and water mixture. Sprinkle baking soda or corn starch where the oil spill is and let it set overnight. Dust off the powder. Seal the inside and outside with clear shellac and then paint. I hope that helps and that it works out for you!

Nothing works as good as Shellac based. The problem with Shellac is you can't spray it. It ruins your spray gun. The benefit of a gun? You're done in 1 minute. But the water-based stuff you can gun is 1/3 as good as the Shellac based. I literally have to gun a piece 3 times to stop the bleed through whereas Shellac based on the same piece is usually one coat. Spray cans? Can't use. Not at $10-$12 a can. Makes a piece too expensive for flips. I only use spray cans on the smallest pieces where it's not worth cleaning the spray gun.
@SabsRehabs3 жыл бұрын
Have you tried running ammonia through your gun to clean after Shellac?
