I recently set up a planted 40 gal breeder as a tiger barb tank. It's currently got 18 tigers and 8 green tigers and has quickly become my favorite tank. They're beautiful fish and are super active, especially at feeding time. I've had zero issues with aggression or anything else, it's really been a great experience so far.

Finally have found a video that really hit all the marks for tiger barbs. I absolutely love them. I have found they are very hardy in my water parameters. I have them in a 55 gallon with a powerhead, and good filtration. They are absolutely gorgeous in a school of at least 10, imo. Mine school quite tightly. Just amazing in a tank with plenty of swimming room. A triangular aquascape gives you some interesting views and places for them to race through.

I bought a group of 8 when I first started keeping fish. I had an idea on how to take care of them but I definitely learned that they're aggressive. I'm thankful my group of 8 lasted till I learned I needed more and once I had a group of 14 they started breeding. I've never tested my water but then again I never really had to because of my tank setup. I've never lost a fish due to water quality. Lost plenty of fish to power outages tho! All fish keepers should invest in some sort of battery backup for their tanks. Tiger barbs are cool and have alot of personality and aren't shy. Mine love eating right out my hand.

@@jeffalbillar7625 thankfully I've never had any algae blooms. I try to keep my tanks as natural as possible and do as little maintenance as possible. Lots of plants and good filters help keep my water in great condition. A big tank helps too. I have a school of about 30 in a 55 gallon long.

@@HeadHoncho727 everything was going fine, but I had just put 2 pothos cuttings in and I decided to put a smaller light over the pothos, and over the tank by proxy. I should have used my brain and just went with what was working, and see if the pothos could flourish under an already working system. But, I ignored my thoughts, and I really didn't think that the smaller light would be a problem. I uploaded a video showing my tank and explaining everything. If you watch it, you'll see how I set the light up. I haven't lost a fish in a minute, and especially more than one at a time, so this was kinda sorta without a doubt somewhat devastating to me. I haven't turned the small light on since and the pothos is growing fast, so the lost fishes are that much harder to take because I didn't have to add the light.

I had a power outage and one of my green tigerbarbs was literally upside-down and flopped sideways wedged under a fake plant, looked super dead. Power came back on and he came back to life after 10 minutes. Now he sometimes will literally do backflips swimming in a 360 circle at rare times.
@voultronix7612 жыл бұрын
4ft tank plus . Dont mix the variants , they can shun the ones that are different. Good water is crucial ! When they get sick they pass it on very easily cause of the close schooling. I recommend those interested in getting to stick to an Asian themed aquarium just because Tetras are more ideal for a South American tank (less nippy)

@erikm83723 ай бұрын
It’s definitely good to get larger groups of fish, in general, and try to get them all at once, per species. Especially for nippy or aggressive species. Introducing smaller groups, potentially from different sources, at different times can add to stress levels and throw off their little pecking orders. For communal species, it’s not such a problem to introduce more fish later on, as we know they’re likely to be accepted. But for example, I had a betta sorority before, only twelve females in a 30 gallon tank, but I made sure to purchase all twelve female bettas the SAME DAY. I’d do the same with barbs. Introduce them to your tank as a complete group so they can immediately figure out their social ranking. So yeah, I agree that bigger schools are always better, when possible, and that’s true with the majority of fish species (or so I’ve found). More individuals will effectively "smooth out" the need for dominance or aggression. Smaller schools (i.e., less than 10) of semi-aggressive species will become brutal quickly as they feel the competition more for resources and, ultimately, survival. But for the peaceful species, larger groups will simply relax them and make them feel more at ease, thus becoming more active and healthier overall. Everyone said kuhli loaches will never be found? I had ten at one point, half black ones and the others striped, and they were active ALL the time… especially at night of course, swimming all over the place. The black ones are the more hyper ones, not sure why, while the striped ones don’t swim to the surface so often, but they def weren’t shy when they had a group. One day I want to have a tiger barb-only tank, or possibly a giant tank with strictly tiger barbs & clown loaches, or possibly some other botia. Zebra, dwarf chain, yo yo. The colors are just complimentary, with clowns & tigers 😊

I started keeping tiger barbs in early 1980s while I was an undergrad. Your video is on point regarding how many to keep and what size tank to keep them in. I kept them with cory catfish a some years ago and all was well. Fast forward to now as I recently bought 3 corys and within 2 weeks the barbs began to harass the corys to a point where all 3 'disappeared'.☹ Right now I have 10 tigers, 3 black rubies, 2 juvenile albinos along with 4 zebra danios and a rainbow shark in a 55 gallon tank. They all get along fine. The tigers go at each other just a little bit every so often but nothing serious. Black rubies are active but non aggressive. The rainbow shark checks up the barbs when food is present>>>Otherwise he goes about his business 'supposedly' eating algae all around the tank. I'm debating on getting a cichlid since I hear that they know how to hold their own (or maybe I should leave things as they are..."if it ain't broke don't fix it!). Thanks for a great video.

I'm really happy to finally see some good information on Tiger Barbs. I bought a group as dither fish form my SA cichlid. They worked well aggression wise but they were also gluttonous little a$$holes who out competed my green terror for food. They'd eat until their abdomens got distended and I'm surprised they didn't explode. The convict and firemouth were fine but I seriously think my green terror is stunted now. I finally moved them to their own tank and the little ba$tards are now on a diet. Lesson: only keep them with other aggressive eaters.

I got the school of 10 I currently have from a local breeder who made that same claim and honestly, my tiger barbs look better than any I've seen elsewhere and I see ZERO aggression from them (also haven't had a single one die in over a year having them). How many barbs can I put in a 20 gal tank? I see you are saying no for 20 gal :(

If you like barbs you could do cherry barbs in a 20 gallon? They have insane color!

I had 11 tiger barbs in a 33 gal long and 8 months later I only have 1 left. Wasn't sure how they all died as my water quality always tested good. But after watching your video it confirms my suspicion that they killed each other off.

Can u Put the green tiger barb in the same tank as tiger barbs? Also great video! keep up the good work.

I'm not sure they will school together, but having two sizable groups in the same tank could work.

I've always loved these fish since I was a child. But i've never had the space to accomodate a tank large enough to house them. I doubt I ever will either. The sheer water weight of a 45-50 would break through the floor in ANY home i've lived in.

So.. had some of these a few years ago, but they just kill everything and each other. Been wanting some more still though. I love them. I have a 20-long that only has a few fish in it. I'm thinking of relocating and getting some barbs.

You might be better off with the snakeskin barb in a 20 long?

I prefer green

Recently my uncle bought me (his choice, not mine, big yikes ahead) 2 tiger barbs and 2 neon tetras into my 10 gallon tank which I planned for one betta. The store didn't want the fishes back even for free and I cannot find nobody who would take them. I have no more space in my house for a bigger tank. I am afraid to buy more fishes, because overcrowding ofc. I don't have a stomach to euthanize them. Do I have some option to make them feel better, or am I doomed to see them live in an incompatible tank? They seem to be doing fine, but I know this is not enough for them.

Just keep your eyes open for someone who has a larger tank. For now just do the best you can.

I somehow got away with a 75 gal tank full of 8 tiger barbs 6 giant danios 5 black kuhli loaches a rainbow shark and an opaline gouramia and literally no one ever picks on each other. I do want to overkill with the filter and get more tiger barbs though.

I keep mine with a large school of Cardinal Tetras. They act like they're not there.
