About The Boys: THE BOYS is an irreverent take on what happens when superheroes, who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians and as revered as Gods, abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good. It's the powerless against the super powerful as The Boys embark on a heroic quest to expose the truth about “The Seven,” and their formidable Vought backing.

2 ways to see this. 1. He wants Ryan as a successor, so from his perspective he wants his son to be like him, the strongest man in the world. 2. He had such an awful childhood, he’s trying to undo that by giving Ryan what he missed out on as a boy, but because he had no true childhood, he doesn’t know what to give him.

I love how the theme for this season is the "past" Kimiko has to confront her past in the Shining Light Liberation Army, Frenchie is confronting his past with killing Colin's family, Hughie is dealing with his estranged Mom who abandoned him and his dad in the PAST. Everyone is dealing with their past in some way. Homelander with his experimentation, Butcher with Joe Kessler being the spitting image of his past "hard" self. Starlight with Firecracker/Sparkler. I find it interesting how homelander is the adult but he acts like the child here lol. Conversely, Ryan is almost like the adult who has trouble explaining to his kid why he did something like “cheating on his spouse.” Then homelander yeets something across the room like the child he is. --- Edit: After posting, I agree that 'cheating on spouse' is not the best example and that was my immediate thought after posting but my ipad was glitching, so i couldn't edit in the moment. I meant to only illustrate that ryan “saw someone behind homelander’s back.” The idea of cheating can escape an innocent child who would think ‘why would anyone ever do want to do that?” In a similar fashion, the concept that Ryan wants to see Butcher escapes Homelander. Homelander rages out while Ryan has trouble explaining to Homelander. Of course, there are better examples, because while cheating on your spouse can have underlying reasons that an adult can conceptually understand that a kid yet cannot (such as lust), the reasons are not justified. There are better examples because here Ryan's reasons are understandable and socially acceptable.
@user-zu3en4ch3t
@user-zu3en4ch3t 7 күн бұрын
I guess, unlike cheating on your spouse, which is not acceptable, what ryan did was more understandable. I used that analogy because Ryan saw “someone” behind Homelander’s back. The idea of cheating is something that can escape a child’s understanding. That’s what i meant haha

Something I haven't seen anyone talk about that l found really interesting is bottom left reflection of Homelander, which actually seems like a morally good person. It’s trying to calm him, encourage him to be better for his son etc. That's why l think deep down Homelander has decency in him. BUT the thing is, his other half’s are too powerful and him being drunk on his unimaginable power makes it difficult to achieve any rational thought with that part. I think Homelander knows about that too, he knows that deep down he's human and just a lab experiment. But because of that he hates himself to such an extent that it leads him to resent his true human nature and instead stick to his godlike identity.

They did say in season 1 that as a kid homelander was very sweet, and even in his diabolical episode, he was still trying to save people without hurting anyone. It would be a good idea that John would eventually lose his super powers, which would fundamentally make him reconsider his attitude towards himself and the lives of other people, and his kind side would help him understand what he once was good, and his evil sides will fade away over time, because Without super powers, they will not have arguments to force John to continue to consider himself God and people as toys. But I think the writers will simply brutally kill him at the hands of Ryan/Butcher or someone else - this is in the spirit of the series. Otherwise, it would be very cool to see Homelander’s difficult moral transformation and great acting.

Homelander is experiencing the average situation of "kid has a father and a step-father and wants to spend time with both of them" that is very common in everyday life. It hurts to see Ryan want to be loved, and Homelander trying to love him. The problem is Homelander is so narcissistic and traumatized from his own childhood that he won't let Ryan be his own person and is just living vicariously through him in this creepy way, trying to force Ryan to have the childhood Homelander himself missed out on ("I've given you everything that I ever wanted!"). He doesn't understand that Ryan needs what Homelander didn't have, but also needs to be his own person. At 1:45 you can see how much of a traumatized kid Homelander is. He's literally crying and can't even look at the authority figure he's imagining (amazing acting, by the way). He's reverting to John, the boy who was so severely abused, because he knows what he's doing is wrong and he feels so guilty over his behavior. It's why he's hearing the voices in his head. But his sociopathy has been abused so deeply into him, and his moral compass is so messed up, he doesn't know how to fix it. And he enjoys the power that ocmes with dominating people so much that no one is willing to love or help him anymore, so he's utterly on his own, and nobody is going to help him understand how to be better. They're too scared. I think deep down Homelander loves Ryan. But he's so damaged he can't show it well, he's too sociopathic to accept he's abusive to Ryan and everyone else, he's too power hungry to let anyone close enough to help him, and ultimately he's too narcissistic to allow himself to change even if he did. It's honetsly sad if you look past the humor and fear his character brings to the screen.

Great analysis! It would be very cool to see how Homelander changes, for example, as a result of the loss of super powers, but most likely the showrunners will simply kill him in a cruel or ridiculous way, like Noir, and we will not see a set of amazingly played scenes - from experiencing the bereavement of his own " godlikeness" to healing and accepting oneself as a normal person.

If he wanted his son to have a happy childhood and live a good life he should have stayed away from him and his mother. That was the best thing Homelander, as a father, could ever do for Ryan.

I lost my mom when I was 17. By that time she already gave me a great emotional foundation, so that I know what real love and nurture is. But at the same time, 17 is young enough so that I also know what its like to be without a mother in formative years. So I have this I think unique perspective that only people with similar experience have, that I can relate to emotionally damaged orphans like homelandar, while at the same time not being like him. In sense that his experience of being starved for parental figure is painfully familiar to me, and I have full understanding of the void inside him, but the difference is I can fill that void with the sense of stability and love instilled in me as a child, this is a substance I can always go back to, while he has nothing to fill it, no substance, literally nothing to go to, he doesnt even have the idea of how it may look or feel. I try to imagine being born into that void I felt at 17. You have no material to build yourself, nothing, just void, and wow is it scary...

For those of you saying living your child everything you've ever wanted is bad, don't have kids. You have to be crazy to not look at the bad things you had in your childhood and not try to keep your child from experiencing it. It's the natural instinct of a parent. Where Homelander is wrong is he's not considering what Ryan wants. But him not wanting Ryan to be alone or without a family is not the part that's narcissistic. Him wanting ti be Ryan's ONLY family is the part that is narcissistic.

I can’t help but feel bad for John. Never had a father or a mother or a childhood. He truly believes needing love is wrong. He tries so hard with Ryan and he can’t understand why Ryan has anything to do with Butcher at all. To top it off, John developed mental coping mechanisms cuz he’s been that isolated and alone his whole life. The fact a company could do this to a child proves our society deserves to fail.

On another note "i have given you everything ive ever wanted" could be taken in another light? Homelander is incredibly messed up and will remain that way, but here we see him express a brief vulnerability here to Ryan. He'll never be father of the year, but he at least wanted Ryan to have a "father". Something he never got to have.
