Can you guys advise me on the simplest, most durable ways to make pottery from clay? Please!

Nope but it looks like fun! But to be honest, a kiln has to be rather large (the walls thick to hold heat) and fire should be constant for two days then slow for half let it cool slow. Lots of charcoal and dry wood my friend! It’s no wonder that coal and oil were the industrial boom they were! Its like stored solar power! Green wood collected last week won’t work because it’s bad idk why Next time go shops pull them out of the fire like all look what I made! Tea pot you didn’t even make dozens of perfect little cups yeah man but you doing great work bro I’m happy to watch ads for you but you can have my membership money instead!

The most durable would be casting in a mold. Thickness grows over time passed. 2nd to throwing as you are in control of the thickness. In both examples the material is homogenous (one piece) . You could put a slab over a form for the same result. Put the form on the wheel and drape a slab over then shape and finish.

Good work !! ..greetings from Spain ! ;-) It all depends on the clay = Primary clay or kaolin: It is not very plastic, but it is the common component of clay pastes and glazes. Its glazed version, known as moloquita, is used in many clay pastes such as chamotte. Spherical clay: Secondary clay is also known by this name. In itself it is very plastic, too. When it is fired, it acquires a white color, which is one of the basic elements for the production of porcelain and earthenware. Earthenware: It is very difficult to find it in its pure state. In the usual cases, it is a mixture of secondary clay and other minerals that improve its quality. In its natural state it has a grayish color that turns white after cooking. Red surface clay: it is the most common among natural clays. Characteristic colored iron oxide, added to silica and clay, promotes vitrification. Refractory clay: it is known to be the one that was previously exposed to high temperatures. It is obtained from veins close to coal and can be used alone or mixed with other clays. It is also commonly used to make fire clay after it has been baked, ground, and reduced to grain. Bentonite: it is a mineral very similar to ceramic, which is usually added to various clays to improve plasticity.

I think making a pottery wheel would be more efficient than your current method. U could also utilise your water wheel to give power/movement to the pottery wheel thru some axels

yes, I will develop it in the future

@StuffandThings_3 жыл бұрын
@@PrimitiveSkillsnet When you do that, make sure you can swap it out for another tool. That water wheel could prove very useful for a grindstone so your tools can be more easily sharpened - after all, both should be the same shape anyways. Similarly it could be useful for grinding grain but perhaps its best to save the waterwheel for only the most tedious and essential tasks - it looks like you have other ways to deal with grain.

Apparently, the transmission of torque will need to be turned at least 1 time through 90 degrees, for this you need either a belt or gears .. Any of the methods requires a more powerful wheel ..

I've missed you a lot! You're one of my favorite channels by far! If you haven't made a pottery wheel, then maybe that could be your next build?? Using cement to make the wheel base and use rope and makeshift wood foot pedal to make it spin?? Would be an easier build out of cement rather than wood in my opinion and would greatly help in your pottery making skills and it would be faster to way to make pottery in my opinion...

I believe that if you bring up the temperature in the kiln slowly, the pottery is less likely to crack or break. On a side note, if there's enough clay available, I'd make clay roof shingles instead of using leaves for your roofing
@Tinker_Nerd3 жыл бұрын
Additionally, finding a way to make the clay cool down slowly would help too. Slower changes in temperature means less thermal shock, which creates less internal stress on the clay

crush the broken potery and mix them into your next batch, its called grog and prevents cracking. also you can make a primitive glaze by mixing wood ash, clay and water; dip and coat your unbaked pottery with this mixture and it will be more resilient and water resistent. cant really give more advice as we dont know the quailties of the clay you are working with.

Great work on the pottery with only a few things breaking given the "basic kiln" you can't set the temperature of to a set value.

Dig a hole in the ground, put a wooden cross with a hole in the middle over the pit. Sit on the edge of the pit with your legs in the pit. At the bottom of the pit you have a large wooden disc with an axis. You can now turn this wooden disc with your legs and thus also turn the pottery wheel above for pottery.

Crushing log buts of broken pottery to an almost powder and adding some to the clay- called grog- strengthens it. I don’t know how long you let dry before for firing. Must be dry. Chalky like when touched with tongue. You want it to be fully dry or it will crack in firing. Larger pieces do take longer to dry. I think you are doing a great job. Primitive kilns aren’t easy to master. They clay ratio and drying. It looks like you have the burn temps and kiln looks fantastic.

I have some clay pots picked up at yard sales, I made Zeer Pots out of them to keep things cool when the power goes out. it really paid off when Hurricane Michael, we was without power for 22 days, hit kept things cool that needed to be, also even helped out a neighbor about 4 houses away from us, we never really even talked, but both came up needed help, the woman was on medicine that needed to be kept cool so we let her put her meds in the zeer pot and he found some clay pots and showed him how to make a zeer pot
@alshirley34443 жыл бұрын
I found that the coil method works really really well you basically roll out a thin line of clay and wrap it as big as you need for a bowl or a plate or a cup. You then smooth down the insides and outsides then fire it. it holds up really well. If you need to make candles you can integrate that with the coils and it creates a stronger bond at least in my opinion
