About This Video:
With the wet season here, it's time to plant this years crop of yams. The previous yam garden, a large basket type enclosure, worked well in discouraging predators from eating the growing tubers. But with time the cane enclosure rots. So I switched to a method of protecting yams by planting the seed yams under a pile of rocks. Early tests prove that this method protects them from being eaten. The rocks are too heavy for scrub turkeys to lift and wild pigs seem not to associate the pile of rocks with food.
So the next step was to make a garden consisting of individual mounds fortified with neat stonework. This was done by building layers of stone circles around the mound while adding soil with each layer. A yam bulb was planted in each mound during this process. A wooden stake was placed in each mound for the yam vine to grow up and horizontal rafters were tied to the top of these stakes to give the vines something to grow across. By the end of the project the yams had started growing with some coiling around the stakes.
About Primitive Technology:
Primitive technology is a hobby where you build things in the wild completely from scratch using no modern tools or materials. These are the strict rules: If you want a fire, use a fire stick - An axe, pick up a stone and shape it - A hut, build one from trees, mud, rocks etc. The challenge is seeing how far you can go without utilizing modern technology. I do not live in the wild, but enjoy building shelter, tools, and more, only utilizing natural materials. To find specific videos, visit my playlist tab for building videos focused on pyrotechnology, shelter, weapons, food & agriculture, tools & machines, and weaving & fiber.

The wet season started and so fire related projects are harder to do. So I planted this years crop of yams using a different technique. The stones covering the mounds protect the yams from predators such as bush turkeys and pigs. The birds are to weak to lift the stones and pigs don't see the piles of stones as food. In time the yam vines will completely cover the structure. Then they will produce smaller yams on the vine and larger yams under the ground.

How can I just be discovering this channel? Why has KZbin never recommended it to me? You'd think just by the number of Ricky Mack videos I've watched and the number of times I have commented on the physical excellence of Jason Cowland of MMT, that they would know how much I would (ahem) appreciate this other Australian guy. And what he does.

If your yams are like most, you don't need to keep the yam tuber attached to the sprouted eye. Simply remove the sprouts off of the yam, and keep them soaking in water. Within a week or two, they will have sprouted roots. This is a slip. You can then just plant the slip. It ensures that you don't end up with a rotting tuber at the base of the plant. Keep up the great videos.

Suggestions for videos, if you find yourself out of ideas. How about some kind of survival camp/shelter? Fast built, less than a day, a sort of "I need to survive here until I can get home" type deal. With editing, it sometimes seems like everything works first try. How about showing us the times when an idea fails, and then you working out how to fix it? Whatever you do, keep it up. I can't get enough.

I can't wait to see what they look like after harvest! Although, aren't yams root vegetables? Won't you have to tear apart your hard work to get to them? @@0-Kirby-0 and another factor is that, those underground yams can grow to a bigger size than the "Digging a hole" method. since they dont need to "push" soil ; which after a while will be compacted due to rain. tapioca has the same problems, and when the root encounters hard soil, the harvested tapioca root is hard as wood.
