About This Video:
With the wet season at it's peak, a shelter was needed to keep tools and materials dry as well as providing a dry work-space for future projects. So after some procrastination, I decided on a low roof design. A 2.5 m by 2.5 m hut with a ridge 2 m above the ground and side walls 75 cm high. Upright posts were put in at about 60 cm intervals along the 3 walls. The front was left open as this is more of an open workshop than a dwelling. Grass was collected from high up in the hill as it will not grow in the darker, lowland forest. Carrying the thatch to the hut was the most labor intensive part taking approximately 36 hours over the course of more than a week. The walls were then coated in soft, grey mud from a nearby clearing. The floor was coated in the same material. A large amount of rain fell due to a nearby tropical cyclone passing to the north. Despite this there were only a few leaks (mainly on the ridge line) that were subsequently patched with more grass. A fire was then lit with fire-sticks despite the damp conditions. This was done to help dry the mud walls and floor. The end of the video shows the yam mounds behind the hut doing well from of the torrential rain. The shelter will suffice for the remaining two months of rain that is expected to fall.
About Primitive Technology:
Primitive technology is a hobby where you build things in the wild completely from scratch using no modern tools or materials. These are the strict rules: If you want a fire, use a fire stick - An axe, pick up a stone and shape it - A hut, build one from trees, mud, rocks etc. The challenge is seeing how far you can go without utilizing modern technology. I do not live in the wild, but enjoy building shelter, tools, and more, only utilizing natural materials. To find specific videos, visit my playlist tab for building videos focused on pyrotechnology, shelter, weapons, food & agriculture, tools & machines, and weaving & fiber.

I realize this message will get diluted near infinetly with the massive audience. I have been a long time viewer. I just watched a very cool critiqueish video of your whole series, and I found that I wanted to comment on that particular youtuber's thoughts. I started typing and then realized how inappropriate it was. I was just about to provide my comments to you, but to someone else. I absolutely love your channel. It is so very calming and rewarding. I am confident I can replicate so many of your tasks with some practice. That, oddly enough, puts modern society in perspective. If I can survive with some sticks and rocks, what the fuck am I doing working so fucking hard for someone else. Your channel provides such a great perspective/vantage point. I love it because I am now working to embrace it. I will not go full primitive, but it is soooooo very rewarding to know that with your video tutorials and a whole-helluva-lot-of-kilocalories I can be (and be happy). Lots of love to you and yours.

The least I could give in return for the hours of entertainment is a minute or two of kudos. While a short reply: "Love your videos" (for example) might suffice, trying to explain why I love the videos should mean something more. It does to me as an artist when I receive feedback. I don't get the opportunity for dialog (or to a minimal degree) here, so I want to put it out there and explain. Context matters, and I want to explain myself sometimes. Derva Kommt von hinten well he needed a new shelter next to his yams. It would last about 2 months. It's not a permanent shelter, after all, there's no plaster on the walls, and it's not really built for permanent stay. His old hut with red brick shingles was better, but it wasn't on his own land, this however is. And if he has a shelter while he is on his own land now, then it's a lot easier for him to make non house building videos as well.

I work on tow boats on intercoastal waterways and have a 20 days on 10 day off schedule. On my time off, I have become infatuated with primitive survival. My mom has a 47 acre plot in deep east Texas, US; within that plot I have an acre of my own. We have a creek that runs completely through the property with a high embankment, surrounded by the pineywoods, almost just like this. The creek has great clay "tiles" for pottery in mass abundance. I have created a dam and several fish traps within the creek and have been highly successful. Crawfish, minnows, catfish, bluegill, sun perch, and the occasional bass. We do have an open grassy field that I use to collect my thatching, along with a Blackberry patch smack-dab in the middle. We have wild hogs, deer, and all of the other creatures that live in the woods. Flint is plentiful, I do make arrowheads by flint-knapping, along with arrow shafts and bows. I have learned how to do so much, just from watching your Channel. I have subscribed I would like to connect with you on a personal level just to answer some more questions that I have. This is pretty much how I have started to live whenever I have time off from work offshore. It saves me money, it keeps me healthy, it keeps me agile and aware. If anyone is really looking for a good Channel to subscribe to pertaining to primitive survival skills, this is the one.

Shows how little, if any, free time humans had. The daylight hours were spent collecting materials and food just to survive. It also shows how the concept of dividing work between members of a community and occupation specialization came to be, where one would only collect wood while another would only build structures, and a third would hunt and gather food, with each one profiting from the other's skill in his or her particular fied.

It also shows what life was like before mechanization of any kind was able to lighten the work load on the individual and that is an extremely fascinating part of history and societal development. As far as I know, a lot of the shelters he's made get worn down over time. He converts them into things like storage or takes them down to reuse for other things. This one he built here is likely because the other hut got too old. It's been ~6 months or so since he built that one?
