Massive kudos to Ben O’Connor, who absolutely deserved this stage win and leader’s jersey. The Tour de France Netflix documentary made me a big fan of his, so I’m happy to see him at the front of the race. I know he’s moving to Jayco next year, but I’ll be rooting for him to leave AG2R with a nice gift.

The craziest part was Ben O’Connor didn’t even put in a crazy acceleration to attack lipowitz. For the time bonus nobody contested him so he easily got the 6 seconds. Then at 60k the breakaway wasn’t working well together and he just kinda drifted off the front with lipowitz not even paying attention. He sees he’s got a gap with a guy he’s comfortable working with and then starts putting the work in to extend it. Lipowitz waited for the other to come by and close the gap til he realized that the gap was 0:45 and he’s got to attack across now. He’s gotten the bonus and the gap with minimal effort which means he’s full of energy for the final climb in which he barely lost any time to the peloton despite being in the break. Idk if the team didn’t give lipowitz any instruction but he didn’t do anything at all to make O’Connor put extra effort in. Foolish stuff

The problem with Roglic or Jonas, they depend on their DS and team (and on Pogacar if he is there) too much and luck the awareness to read the dangerous moves. Even Remco is much better at reading the race. Remco when he is in the backfoot, he panics and argue too much with opponent riders. For Roglic it is too late now, but the only solution to this is send them to one day and one week races with weak team and fend off for themselves and try to read the development of the race.

It's great to see this second video with a more detailed analysis of the tactical mistakes that RBH made. Ben O'Connor was on a great day on a course that perfectly suited his capabilities, but he should have never been allowed this big a time margin. It all comes back to the DS and his inability to modify the plan on the fly. It is up to the DS to know the capabilities of the other riders and the course. IMHO, the riders in the break were too strong to have allowed them all to go. CVV said that before Peacock came on air, there had been a huge fight to establish the break. But still, the peloton has the final say as to who is allowed in the break. And yes, I thought Roglic looked really upset after this stage too. He should be because his DS has made his (Roglic and the team) job harder than it should have been. For us, the fans, the battle for the podium has gotten a lot more interesting as a result of this stage.

Primoz can't just drop the elite GC selection at the flamme rouge & jag bonus seconds on every summit finish anymore. With that much time to recover he has to try and drop O'Connor much earlier, and turn it into an FTP battle this plays to Almeida's strengths in my opinion. It will be interesting to see who will fire the first shots when the opportunity comes to attack O'Connor.

@@veganpotterthevegan Kuss, in the Grand Tours at least, was only a super domestique until winning last year's Vuelta so I think they are on about the same level. Last year Kuss wasn't really helped much by Rog or Jonas, in fact they attacked him. O'Connor (and riders like him, like Kuss was before year's Vuelta) are susceptable to having off days and I think he has to have one of those to lose this race. I don't think it's even a mentality thing it's just whether can sustain riding with the other GC riders day after day on the tougher stages later in the race. I remember Adam Yates having a massive lead in the Giro a few years ago, the one that Froome won with that amazing 100km breakaway effort, and he capitulated later in the race so even though you're right in saying O'Connor has a 4th in the TdF and Giro, the latter, this year's Giro what from Pog just didn't have any top GC riders (not blaming O'Connor, he did what he needed to do to get 4th) and the 2021 TdF he finished 10 minutes back and that was 3 years ago so I'm not convinced yet he won't lose all this time he's gained. It does remind me a bit about the Giro that Richard Carapaz won. No one thought he was a threat so let him go up the road and he the race lead all the way to the finish. It could happen again I need to see more of O'Connor on mountainous stages to be convinced and there are quite a difficult stages still to come.

Regardless of what happens by the end of the Vuelta, Roglic is totally right to be pissed off. That said, in same circumstances, Hinault would have bossed that one to the T. Roglic, though team leader, didn’t. That may cost him dearly.
@mattpotter8725
@mattpotter8725 20 күн бұрын
Roglic on the road have told his best domestiques to go to the front and do some work to bring the gap down on the climbs. The Bora riders on the front weren't even rotating through and then taking a break, they just did their pull and then peeled off, so if Roglic is pissed off with anyone it would be himself. Sure those in the car should have been running the show but when it was obvious the plan wasn't working you send Vlasov and Martinez to the front, you even get on the radio and call back Lipowitz as well, so I have little sympathy I'm afraid.

Hopefully Decathlon AG2R have a decent DS and not one from the Ineos school of thought… they really don’t have to do anything - they can let breakaways go with the likes of Kuss, Yates, Carapaz or C-Rod in them and peg them at 3-4 minutes and leave it other teams to close it down, all those riders 7-10 minutes down become podium threats long before they become red jersey threats. Plus UAE aren’t going to say ‘you ride’ to DAG2R if Roglic goes up the road and vice versa with Bora…. It’s definitely made this Vuelta interesting, as long as they don’t do an Ineos and decide they have to control everything and close things down alone…

I think that Ben has it. He can only loose, nobody else can win it, even Rog, he's not in a super form and Almeida or Landa are more a follower type not a strickers or ride with agressive style to make a real difference to Ben. Let's see what Rog can pull out

Chris, what would you say about riding in another Grand Tour?! indieVelo is going to have a 5-day stage race called the indieVelo Grand Tour at the end of September - it would be incredible if you were there to race it! GC, mountain, and Sprint jerseys are all yours to fight for with or without a team 👍🏻

@chris horner , education required please, why didn't all the other teams just do track stands and say to Roglic your in Red and are the favourite over to you and Bora if we lose 10 mins that's your problem?

Could it be that everyone was expecting Roglic and BHG to make a move, but he's actually injured and unable to do anything? That would explain a lot. He might have been suffering during the interview as well. If that's true, he essentially gifted the win to Ben because all the other teams were relying on him being the alpha. Such poor tactics all around. It looks like it is time that all this old school "tacticians" are being replaced by algorithms.

UAE also came to espanja to win ! so they also had to work . Bora AND UAE had to move each 2 riders to the front to get O connor back ! For both teams it was importand Ben wouldend take to much time. Now we have almost a sep kuss scenario .... Ben wil not loose a lot of time in the high mountens from all the climbers. And BTW Ben is having a great team arround him !!! dont forget !

It wasn't UAE's job to put everything in on their own to bring the gap down. They did send some riders to the front to have a chat the Bora riders, I'm guessing to see if they wanted to work together to bring the gap down, they obviously didn't see a problem with how things were going. Last year many teams on many stages of the Grand Tours pulled on the front for Jumbo-Visma giving them a free ride only to disappear once they're brought breaks back and for Jumbo-Visma to win the stages so if they had done this the same thing could have happened to them so I don't see this as being because it's been a long season but just because they didn't want to do it. It was Bora's having the race leader to say last do some of the work and they just weren't prepared to do so.

@@mattpotter8725 I agree to disagree Roglic is at 4.51 and Almeida is at 4.59 8 seconds difference that's nothing. Might have had more to do with Yates fall ?? Essentially everyone lost a shit ton of time. I doubt UAE would have ridden the same if Pogacar was in the race . But all makes for interesting viewing .

BO'C needs to ride SUUUUUUUUUUUUUPER Smart! he doesn't need to respond to every Roglic attack he needs to minimise his losses and ride his own race, for a rider of his quality, gifting him a lead of nearly 5 mins is a ludicrous error. The biggest errors were not pulling Lipowitz back and allowing the last Movistar rider to ride the front and allow the advantage to re-blow out!.... they should have at least put all their guys on the front and caned it in the last 10km and brought the gap down to 4 mins....a 2 min gap would be more manageable and controllable for RBBH/Roglic
