In my humble opinion, THIS was the tightest and dopest of all of Prince’s band. I wished that he had never changed from this band. They were funky and even looked the part. Everyone did their part, and did it very well! Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t mind, Wendy, when she joined his band. However, Dez on guitar just gave this band something special. I remember the CONTROVERSY tour because I was fortunate enough to go myself. Prince outdid himself, of course. I miss Prince so much! The music industry just isn’t the same without him. This first 'era' of Prince was so brilliant because the music industry had absolutely no idea what had hit them - or what was *about* to hit them. He was an amazing musician, composer and social critic - and he hadn't even become a world megastar yet (but was well known in US clubs and R&B rotation). This single was off of his *fourth* album - "1999" was the very next album, which changed everything. I love his early work.

@@HighFrequencyRadio yes, Prince is, was sorry such a talented musician, and this track is actually quite simple if you break it down. The bass is almost one note the entire song, the synthesiser is the most prominent instrument in this track, but when you take all those layers of simplicity and balance it the way he and they have makes it seriously one of thee best songs in history, which sadly isn’t one of his most well known tracks. Controversy has a way of hitting you deep directly to your funk bone and inner groove to dance with moves you didn’t even know you had Hahaha But you’re right Voitures, that basic guitar riffs and absurdly talented musician, to just be so freely capable of throwing little licks and funky leads. “Controversy,” much like Prince himself, refuses to be pigeonholed into one category: it’s a timeless dance classic, a psychological confession (“People call me rude / I wish we all were nude / I wish there was no black and white / I wish there were no rules”), and an unflinching social critique all in one (“I just can’t believe all the things people say… Am I black or white, am I straight or gay… Do I believe in God, do I believe in me?”). I like this song but is it too synth & glam, but damn he plays it so dirty....he's dressed in heals and stockings, but he talks dirty and oozes sex sweat, animalistic passion for women. You're ga some guys would say if you were a guy and a prince fan. But even those who said liked it. Except the complex type of guys that needed to show they were too manly for it. . (it was stated that way in that time save any pc bs about the you're gay wording) some of that part remained through till this day. Sexuality, Controversy, Do Me, Free, Annie Christian, Jack Me Off & Little Red Corvette remain at or near the top of my list till his day. “Controversy” is the song that made me a Prince fan, back in 1981. I was eleven years old and I’d never heard anything like this before. I particularly love the long version with The Lord’s Prayer that they would play on the radio. What other artist would ever think to recite a prayer in a song? Only Prince! And he was so sincere in his religion; one could tell that. When my best friend heard it on the local radio station, she said, “KFRC is getting religious!” I just wish that MTV had played this video back in 1981. We had to wait till late 1982/early 1983 before we got to see Prince on video. Prince had the most beautiful and expressive eyes. Prince’s talent and charisma was incredible! He was already a star in this video, destined for greater things in the near future.

The most gifted artist to ever walk the planet 🌍. The world 🌎 never seen anything like Prince 💜. Some actually believe he would flame 🔥 out. Dirty mind, 1999 , purple 🟣 Rain, sign of the times, etc continued. I followed Prince from his first album to his last 😢. Nobody will ever replace him. The first 5 albums produced written arranged composed and played all the instruments by Prince 💜.

I had this song echoing in the deep of my mind, I used to listen from a cassette in the 80s but recorded from the radio, no name on it. I spend long time looking for this song inside 80s hits Playlists with no luck, during years... Until today, I found my old cassette in a old box from my mom and finally Shazam it to get the name. This was like a travel to the past, to listen this great song again after 30 years leave a incomparable feeling with nostalgic included. Finally I found it.

Prince set the president at that time for future music Genres. He wrote so many songs for other up and coming artists that made supersonic hits. Not just in his time but future times right up until he died. Absolute Genius.

The moment the whole persona came together. Purple, guitar, funky groove for days, the charisma... Then 1999 opened him up to the MTV living room... Then Purple Rain put him in front of the whole world. This right here is the birth of a supernova.

Prince scared people with his music, and it wasn’t just the lyrics, he knew how to transfer emotions and make people feel things they never felt before. His album Purple Rain was the one that started the “explicit lyrics” sticker on the CDs back in the day because of citizens and the government complaints to his art.

Yeah, this comment of yours is quite insightful. Comes close to putting into words the intangible of what is generally difficult to describe.
@simonemotton7450 Жыл бұрын
Don't tell that to the Too Live Crew.... I'm sure they thought they were the reason for the sticker, what with the whole Congressional hearing and whatnot
@sexobscura Жыл бұрын
and back then it was LPs and not CDs (CD didn't really hit at all as sellable until 1987ish)

I agree, it was Too Live Crew, but after reading this comment, I researched and found out the politician's wife who started the sticker movement also mentioned Darling Nikki. It seems it took years to get through the courts and Miss Lady's daughter apparently was listening to Darling Nikki and her mom caught her. I was surprised because I grew up then and remember all the Two Live Crew craziness. Now, I am going to listen to Two Live Crew. Have a great weekend.

I know, right? He made it look easy, but he had to have been tremendously well practiced. His songwriting skills were IMO phenomenal. I'm happy he is now recognized for his superior skills on guitar, but I hope one day the world will recognize him for his absolutely outstanding skills as both a composer and lyricist.

Prince opened up doors other musicians couldn't open. He brought fashion to the forefront for both sexes and made people realize they can still look good no matter what they wore. He exposed the music industry and the greed the corrupts its very essence of the greed of man. RIP dude!

💜Did you ever see the episode of the Dave Chappelle show were he dressed up as Prince? It was hilarious! It was loosely based on the real basketball match at Prince's house after an award show. They all played basketball in the clothes they wore to the show. Comedian Charlie Murphy told Dave Chappelle about that night and they did a skit about it. Prince/Dave jumps in the air while making a basket and slowly floats down...very slowly, lol. Prince was both extremely athletic and graceful at the same time. He could of easily had a career in dance as well.💜 SHIRTS VS BLOUSES...GAME BLOUSES.💜🏀💜🏀💜
