There is an acoustic performance where Prince says, while playing 'Cream': " You know, I wrote this while I was looking in the mirrow. I'm serious...."". And then...he smiled like a playfull child. Just adorable! 💖

Cool video. I've really gotten into 'Strolin'' off this album. Heard it years ago and just kinda blew it off, but I rediscovered it a couple months back and it's really grown on me. Sounds like a prequel to When You Were Mine.

This album is LIFE! My Wedding was a D&P theme. My bride walked out to the D&P track and every table at the reception was named after a track from the album. It was a Prince fans dream. Favorite track on the album; Insatiable. Great review!

Great review. Just finished listening to the Diamonds and Pearls album it's great. I was a toddler when it was released and only song I really knew from it was Diamonds and Pearls (which is one of my favorite Prince songs). I grew up on that hip hop/new jack swing sound of the 90s, so this is right up my alley. There's a few tracks I don't practically care for but all in all, it's a great album. Definitely in my top 5 of Prince albums.

Also: The version of Willing & Able on the video is different than the album version, and I think it's a lot better. Prince's vocal is a lot more dynamic on the video version. If you haven't seen it, you should hunt it down.

The influence of '70s glam on Prince's music is underestimated. "Cream" almost out-glams Marc Bolan himself. And I personally think "Strollin'" is perfectly placed on the album; it's a great little change of pace. I've listened to this album and "Symbol" more than any of the others. This period of his work is so varied there's always something new to hear.

Diamonds and Pearls was one of his pop gems for sure. The review you gave was fair. You focused on what was imminent at the time. Especially, with his label. The dichotomy of that internal mental stimulation. He created in my opinion a brilliant album. Cream was his way of saying look I really can write a song about any theme. Brilliant work. I remember hearing that album saying at the time. Oh! he's back on the frontier with everyone. I particular like your enthusiasm for your Christmas gift back in 91.

Diamonds & Pearls was Prince's current album when I became a fan, and it gets a lot of the credit for pulling me into his music, though Graffiti Bridge and Batman both did a lot of that lifting as well. It's hard to pick favorites on here, because the whole album draws me into that time of my life and the excitement of discovering this music. The singles are all fantastic. I was glad to hear you give some love to Push. It seems like many reviewers delight in trashing Push and Jughead, but I think both of these songs are a lot of fun and terribly underrated. Also, you made me laugh out loud when you pointedly mentioned Sonny T, not B.

great review this is one of my favourite albums and periods. Was also looking 2 do a video about that era after doing a gold experience era one too. as they are probably my 2 favourite periods. when D&P came out id only been a fan/friend for 2 years and it was my first prince band for My generation. I loved the whole gimmick of the thing from the holographic album cover to The look of the band and prince's typhoon hair and the yellow suits and cloud guitar. the new videos all higher production than ever before and even a D&P video collection on vhs which was my Xmas present in 92 when it came out. and the D&P tour was just incredible!!!! you got it spot on when u said the album was ahead of its time as I remember my first listen and just going whoooaaa what the hell was that!!!! just sounded like it was from another universe back in 1991!! also love the D&P new beginnings which has in my opinion a much better version of insatiable on it.

Good review. The 2 songs that I love from this are Gett Off and Insatiable. I understand why this album was so well received. I guess for me entering the music business at the time this came out, I started to listen to music differently. It personally kind of hurt me listening to Tony rap overall. And although I just said I love Gett Off, I found it hard witnessing Prince chasing trends as opposed to setting them. That said you're VERY good at reviews.

Here we go! I'm watching your album reviews in order, and THIS is where I jumped on officially: It's the first Prince album I bought, but the Batman soundtrack was the first I got really, really into. I mean, this album contributed to my entire sense of identity, and what it means to define a sense of style for expressing masculinity. I cannot stress enough how much this album means to me. I love every moment of it. It was so transgressive to a farm boy in Georgia. LOL Also, "Diamonds and Pearls" could perhaps be my favorite Prince song. It's so rich, dreamy, and almost like something out of a fantasy universe. But that's also how I feel about "Most Beautiful Girl in the World," which also transports me to a dream world.

Great video as always, so a big thank you from across the pond. I don't wish to bother any Prince fans but after Lovesexy, I never truly loved a Prince album again, there were moments of brilliance, and some great songs, but for me Dirty Mind to Lovesexy was his best run, maybe the greatest run of any artist. I may not b a soldier but I know what it's like 2 b hateful but also at the same time being hurt by people that don't care. And yes the guitar solos is on point and it speaks 2 me as well. Eye still have the vinyl LP I bought on the day of release back in 1991 :-) Diamonds and Peals is a fantastic album. I found myself singing to each and every one of the songs and it dawned on me how good it has aged.

I love the review as always. I actually like Tony's contributions to Prince's music. It showed me that you don't have to be a hardcore rapper to make an impact. His flow is smooth and his lyrics are always stellar to me. My favorite song? OMG... I love the power of Live 4 Love, the boldness of Thunder, always loved when he talked about God. Willing and Able is my joint! Gett Off is just wow. Money Don't Matter 2nite is in a class all its own. So I cannot pick a favorite lol. But if I must choose, I'd have to say Live 4 Love. But the entire album is Insatiable 😉💜💜💜

It must be admitted, after the mixed reception that had been reserved for Graffiti Bridge we were pleased with the commercial success of Diamonds And Pearls. When Gett Off comes out in maxi single it's going to be crazy, in Paris one of the Fnac stores shows the VHS of Gett Off in his auditorium every hour and the fans of Prince go there regularly "religiously", too funny. It was with the tour of this album that I saw Prince in concert for the first time, in Bercy (renamed Accord Hotel Arena today). Here's my playlist for the album : Thunder Daddy Pop Live 4 Love Jughead Push 4 Love Gett Off Money Don't Matter 2 Night Cream Diamonds and Pearls. My favorite songs : Gett Off, Live 4 Love, Thunder

I recently spent a month just listening to this album over and over and over and allowing the grooves and the beats and the music just win me over. I dismissed this album as being top heavy with the singles being the “only good tracks” but I was so wrong. Thunder (not a single in the US), Live 4 Love and Willing & Able are some of his best non-singles from the 90s and while I’m still not a big fan of Tony’s contributions, I do like what he brings to Live 4 Love, Push, & W&A. This is a 4/5 for me personally. Rosie is the NPG MVP of the album though.

Cartridge doesnt fit in your video game - is a dated term. In the 80s home video games (Atari/Sega/Intellivision) were on cartridges. So the use by Prince doesnt mean he never played video games.
@PrincesFriend5 жыл бұрын
Still don’t buy the argument. The cartridge IS the game. The lingo he used is like what the parents of kids who played it would say. I don’t think he NEVER played them but he definitely didn’t come off a “gamer” for sure. It’s cool, still love the album and song

Prince thought Sonny T was a better guitarist than he that's how much props he gave Sonny. D & P Another album to love and adore. Money Don't Matter Tonight is a favourite deep soulful and is what I want for my life. Daddy Pop is just banging and repeated constantly. Cream is tasty, in the UK I remember it was everywhere in heavy rotation. The beautiful Willing and Able sounds more like New Orleans creole music to me its superb I love to dance hard to it. Walk Don't Walk I will play to my pupils as I want them to walk to the beat of their own drum. Live 4 Love recently saved me from a road rage incident last year. Being a speed demon i overtook a driver. he didn't like it and tried to overtake me back. He drove alongside me gesticulating wildly. I wound down my window and turned it up loud to irritate the rude driver then started singing Live 4 Love over and over again he was furious at 1st then laughed we apologised to each other he gave thumbs up and drove away. What a powerful message Prince sent us both. Love hearing the back story to each of these albums which makes you want to dive in and find new things. I did not notice Prince singing/saying the names of all the tracks on his albums so guess what? D and P this weekend. Thanks again Prince's Friend for another terrific review 😎🎵

The press has often derided this album as being overly commercial. That's total bs, in my opinion. Diamonds & Pearls is Prince continuing his quest for constant reinvention, exploring new territory. It works better on some tracks than on others (although I wouldn't call any of the tracks on Diamonds duds), but that's always going to be the case with an artist who doesn't limit himself to familiar territory - it's the price you pay for being artistically daring. In that sense, Diamonds Pearls is a great example of Prince being Prince. The fact that he managed to match his musical explorations with some great pop hooks shouldn't be seen as a negative at all; if anything it's a testament to what a great songwriter he was. Favorite tracks: Cream, Thunder, Gett Off, Money Don't Matter 2Night, Diamonds & Pearls, Daddy Pop, Insatiable, Strollin'.

Hey P Friend - do you have the link to the Diamonds And Pearls lyrics recited by actors? Im not finding it. Thanks!! Insatiable is my fav but Diamonds is a close 2nd.

I can't believe you like Jughead and Push, they are awful and stop this album from being a classic. Glad u like Insatiable though. Its a good album, but misses the quirkiness and cleverness of earlier projects, musically pleasing and catchy though. Great review.
