Basically everything that can be done with popular music, has been done. They've run out of things to do with music in the form it has taken since the 1950s. The 1960s, 70s, 80s, 90s was a time of great freedom and expansion musically, and they used all of the best ideas up. There are a few good song ideas these days but fewer. A lot of new good songs are very derivative of old music and would be right at home in the 80s or 90s. What is the sound of the 2010s compared to the 2000s? Will the sound of the 2020s be different to the 2010s? The 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s are all distinct.
