Prince Harry: I took drugs by FIONA BARTON and LOUISA PRITCHARD, Mail on Sunday Prince Harry was ordered to visit a drugs rehabilitation clinic by his father after the teenager confessed to smoking cannabis and heavy drinking, it was revealed last night. The short sharp shock treatment came after the Prince, who was 16 at the time, admitted experimenting with the class B drug with older teenagers at Highgrove, at private parties in Gloucestershire and in an outbuilding at a local pub. He also told how he had been taking part in underage drinking at the same pub during after-hours sessions. Prince Charles, who confronted his younger son after noticing a dramatic change in the boy's behaviour, took Harry to Featherstone Lodge, a residential centre for drug users in Peckham, South London, which he himself had opened in 1998. There the young Prince talked to recovering cocaine and heroin addicts who warned him that they had begun by abusing alcohol and smoking cannabis. The day-long visit shocked the Prince to such an extent, that he has not touched alcohol or drugs since. It is understood that although the Prince was accompanied by Mark Dyer, his aide and friend, his Royal Protection officer - who guards him round the clock - remained outside during the rehabilitation sessions. Prince Harry began experimenting with the drug when he was left alone at Prince Charles's country home, Highgrove, during the summer. Until last year, Prince Charles made it a rule to always be at home during the school holidays but last June and July, Prince William was away on his gap year and Charles believed Harry was old enough to be left alone. But the teenager made friends with a new, older crowd at the Rattlebone Inn in Sherston, just a couple of miles from Highgrove. One of his new friends, agricultural student Guy Pelly, 19, is understood to have introduced the Prince to cannabis. A family friend is reported as saying: 'He encouraged Harry to experiment with the drug at a private party in Tetbury and, on one occasion, in a shed at the back of the Rattlebone Inn. It wasn't long before Pelly would take drugs into Highgrove so he could smoke it at parties there. 'Harry would never smoke it inside the house, though on one occasion he went outside for a joint.' Members of staff at Highgrove noticed a smell of cannabis after one party and alerted Charles, who had already become alarmed at the change in his son. 'The Prince talked to Harry and he admitted it straight away. There was no point in screaming and shouting at him. The Prince is a patron of a number of drugs charities and he took advice from the experts. 'He decided it would be a good idea for Harry to spend a day talking to people coming out of cocaine and heroin addiction to see what happens to you if you start taking drugs. 'He wants Harry to learn from hard experience. These are hard heroin addicts and consequences of their drug abuse shocked Harry into realising what he was doing was not the right path to go down and that the people he was mixing with were not the right friends to have.'
