Because Prince John was only the incumbent ruler of England. Richard the Lionheart was the actual ruler, but he'd taken off on the Crusades. His brother John ruled in his stead. The thing is, John was actually a great diplomat, but a poor military strategist. As to why his taxes were so damned high - the Crusades wouldn't pay themselves, after all.

Okay, interpretations. He's immature, narcissistic, and childish. He's lived his entire life with privilege, but he's never had to deal with responsibility, or boundaries. As a child he was constantly in his brother's shadow, and possibly developed a sense of shame or self-loathing watching his brother assume the responsibilities of kingship while he was left in idle, irrelevant luxury. With his brother out of the way, John is on a power trip, pure and simple. His ability to overtax the kingdom is a childish temper tantrum, a way of getting back at his brother by taking all his toys when he isn't looking. Sir Hiss is the one with the cunning to make this plot work, but John also resents him because he hates being reliant on someone else, and he'd rather think the plot was his own idea, which it wasn't. He bullies Hiss because he constantly is trying to prove that he really is the one in charge.

+William Craig If you want a great portrayal of Eleanor of Aquitaine watch "The Lion in Winter" with Peter O'Toole as Henry II (Richard and John's father) and Katheryn Hepburn as Eleanor of Aquitaine. Hepburn was definitely born to play this role. Eleanore is a great mix of Hepburn's natural charm, charisma and sass. It is set late in Henry's reign during a Christmas court. Henry's son and heir died and now he has to choose a new one, but he and Eleanor can't decide between Richard (the eldest and Eleanor's favorite) or John ( who Henry prefers). Eleanore and Henry are not in the best point in their marriage since Henry has previously had her locked up for helping their three sons rebel against him, but has now let her out just for Christmas. Basically everyone in that family are plotting against one another in order to come out on top. The script, especially the one liners, are great and all the acting is superb all around. I can't recommend it enough.

Some people just call him Robin Hood, but then they say that he steals from the workers (Which Robin Hood didn't) and gives it to the immigrants (Which in an ideal world isn't really something that exists since every human is still human, same laws apply) Actually, when it's looked up properly, Obama doesn't either (WHAAT?!) Yeah, well, in some countries. I've seen the tendency in capitalistic conservative countries. Other coutries has like what some people say "Robin Hood taxes" (with some negative hints to it, for some reason I don't get, specially after watching this...).
