I caught on to Prince, as far back in thr late '70's when he first bagan his music career. With his Dirty Mind album, alot of black people distanced themselves from him because for them, he want too rock n roll, punk & pop. Not me. I couldnt have cared less how others perceived him. To be certain, the way he dressed live on stage sometimes I couldnt vibe with, but his MUSIC and incredible music talents I stuck with from his For You album all the way to the unreleased Deliverance album right before his untimely death in 2016.

In the UK we never really questioned Prince’s vibe, or dress sense or whatever. Having been through Bowie, Queen, glam, New Romantics…he just came across as super awesome and exciting. End of!

The "Sign 'O The Times" film is peak Prince with one of the greatest bands that ever played with him, and every single song is genius, the sets, lights and sound are immaculate, and the style and performance are off of the scale. It is a sensual feast and an artist at the top of his game, totally in charge of everything he wanted to do yet free to cut loose and soar at the same time.

Queen got big a few years before Prince in the 1970s, but there were several years in the late 1970s through the 1980s where they were both popular. The Revolution was Prince's first promoted band that he recorded and toured with in the early to mid 1980s. They were also featured in a movie with him titled "Purple Rain", which "When Doves Cry" was also from the soundtrack of and had clips from the movie in this music video. As far as fashion, what Prince was wearing wasn't all that unusual for several celebrities of the time (there was a period of androgynous fashion sense from the 70s into the 80s). Prince was just able to pull it off (like his music) on a level better than most.

You could not go very long back in the 1980s without hearing a song on the radio from either Prince or Michael Jackson. 'The Purple Rain' movie and soundtrack were particularly culturally iconic. His music stands up to be remembered always. The part of the Prince bio that does not always get reported is how he mentored and supported female artists. Both within and apart from the Revolution band. Sheila E., Sheena Easton, Vanity, Apollonia, and Alicia Keys were all among the Prince protégées. Also noteworthy and admirable is how Prince did not absorb himself within the Hollywood glamor lifestyle. He was born in Minnesota and spent most of his life there.

Prince and the Revolution were around for a long time. I think that Queen was formed 10 years prior to Prince releasing his first album (1978), but this man was multi-talented and would rather play most of the instruments in his songs. This was on the Purple Rain album in 1984 and I was just learning how to ride my bike when I was 6 years old. It's a really good song.

Prince was one hell of a guitar player. I saw him at a hall of fame induction. He and quite a few well known musical artists played, When My Guitar Gentley Weeps by George Harrison of The Beatles. George Harrison's son was there playing guitar as well, and he looks exactly like his dad.

I couldn't help but smile when you said that you wished you were in your 20's when Prince was popping off because your look and your vibe are totally reminiscent of that era. You look very much like Apollonia and the types of women Prince was into back then for sure. I tell my now Teenage kids they would have LOVED the 80's and might choose to stay there if I took them back in a time machine. I get the feeling you might have chosen to stay as well. I was 6-7 years old when Prince started popping off (and 8 when this song and the movie "Purple Rain" dropped) and very much into pop music even as a little kid and I used to feel like I was getting into trouble whenever I'd see him on TV lol. Like I knew I shouldn't be watching it as a little kid but I couldn't help it it was so good and STILL is. It's even better now I think, personally. 1984 was the best year for music ever and Prince's "Purple Rain" soundtrack was right at the top of the list. "When Doves Cry" was the lead single, followed by one hit after the next. As a kid in his teens, I was obsessed with his music-I own every one of his albums, many on vinyl. Queen, meanwhile, also had a big album in 1984-"The Works" which included the hits "Radio Ga Ga" and "I Want to Break Free." So you could easily turn on the radio and hear Prince followed by Queen. Both tremendous artists, both one-of-a-kind. Great reaction!

This era and Queen was basically the '80s. So many different and unique musical styles. The Revolution was Prince's band back then, he handpicked and assembled each individual musician in his band. By the '90s he had formed a new band called The New Power Generation.

Anyone who loves Prince is a friend of mine. About his "outrageous" visuals: The 80s was shamefully different from now in one important way: It was practically impossible for black artists to get on MTV. (There's even an MTV interview with David Bowie from the era, where he interrogates/chastises the interviewer about this. Look it up, it's brilliant). Michael Jackson broke through this glass ceiling with Thriller, but only after his label threatened MTV to withhold their other artists. Now, Prince not only had similarly big dreams to that of MJ, he was adamant not to be marketed/viewed as a "black artist". All of this contributed to his fashion and image decisions - and to him hiring such a diverse bunch of musicians for his backing band The Revolution. Black, white, male, female. (Still an unusual thing in the 80s). I frankly don't know why anyone would be bothered by his style, unless they harbour some latent anxiety over their own sexuality. I certainly wouldn't wear everything he wore, but hey, it's show business is it not? Just wait til you see him at his early, most outrageous: Just a thong, high heels and an open trench coat. Opening for the Rolling Stones in that outfit, the audience threw things at him until he left the stage. In reality though the man was 100% straight. (To the nth degree, as I'm sure you can imagine...) In any case, the androgynous thing was big in the 80s - lots of artists were into it. (And quite a few openly gay artists emerged as well). Even the tough hair metal guys wore makeup and borrowed clothes from their girlfriends. What's important though is that Prince is the GOAT. The rest of it is just noise.

Prince recorded more sexually open records like 'Controversy' and 'Dirty mind'... before his 1982 album '1999' (which The Revolution members played and sang on) made him a superstar on MTV and inspired him to make his first movie 'Purple Rain' released in 1984 and filmed in Minnesota... It became a blockbuster hit and the 'Purple Rain' soundtrack sold 25 million copies worldwide, credited to Prince and The Revolution. At least half of what you have written is inaccurate....for example, he wasn't discovered in MN by WB Reps at all, he went to NY with his manager and demo in hand and shopped around all 5 major labels, each showing varying degrees of interest, but only WB were willing to give him a 3-album deal AND allow him to produce himself. Prince didn't put The Revolution together until 1983, not 1979, Dez Dickerson left before they formed and only "some" members of the still-to-come Revolution were on 1999. However, they only provided backing vocals on a handful of tracks - no-one else played anything on the album other than Prince, except for just ONE guitar solo (on Little Red Corvette). I could go on, but please check facts before publishing - it doesn't help the legacy or the people new to his music.

Your way of putting it wouldn't even make Cliff's notes, because it's just WRONG, not abbreviated! Except it is NOT a fact, the only fact is that Prince put a band together in 1979, called THE REBELS, which feature 2 musicians who ended up in The Revolution when it was formed in 1983. He was toying with the name once 1999 was recorded and even printed it on the 1999 album, but in reverse. Maybe u know the finer details, but accounts do vary from person to person and maybe some say what others deny... U may be a Prince superfan... but hardcore fans of artists are the WORST because they get upset and triggered by minor details... This was not YOUR story - this was Prince's story and recollections vary. WE can only base our interpretations of what people recollect (Correctly or incorrectly) For example: Mick Jones of Foreigner is credited w/ writing "I want to know what love is"... A little insight on the era from someone who was there. This was 1984 and "When Doves Cry" was the 1st single Prince released from the "Purple Rain" soundtrack album. It topped the charts. A month or so later, the movie "Purple Rain" hit the theatres and that was it. Prince took over the world. As for the club scene, his music and image ruled. Guys tried to dress and dance like him and the girls LOVED it. Prince's music PACKED the dance floor and it was LIT...in purple. It was truly something you had to be there for.

This song is from the album "Purple Rain"- There's also a movie with the same title that's all about him and his upbringing. The "Revolution" was the name of his band. His catalog is amazing! 80’s and early 90s was my teenage years… it’s still the only music that plays in my car. Prince is definitely in my collection. Earlier this year I drove a band around on a US tour and they played at the First Avenue Nightclub where prince and a lot of other bands played. Outside the building across the street on a giant building is a mural of Prince you’d flip out over. You need to watch Prince’s movie Purple Rain. There were so many hit songs from Prince, it was the number one sound track. Some of the scenes you saw in the video you just watched, are from that movie.

Yes, Mia would be in a Prince video if they ever met. He is a hell of a dancer, and this 'short' version of this video does not show where he jumps and do a 360 in the air and make the landing to the beat of the song. It is one of his coolest dance moves.

The Revolution was his band in the 80s. The movie Purple Rain was "quasi-biographical". I think it would be worth watching for you because he plays a character very loosely based on himself, and you will have a better understanding of his vibe and what the era was like. The 80s are known for using synthesizers (electronic, programmed keyboards) to produce music. Prince made a lot of great music, and was known for being an amazing live performer. After the success of Purple Rain (album/movie/tour), people just pretty much respected and accepted Prince, acknowledging his talent, creativity, and boundary pushing. He was a bit mysterious; he spoke little, but created a lot. (He is said to have produced a song a day. When he died, he had two rooms ["The Vault"] full of work - music, video footage, projects, etc...) He was allowed his own genre and was as androgynous as he wanted to be, while others were likely to be judged if they tried to do the same thing. Some thought he was strange, but Prince did what he wanted and kept bringing the beats, so that was respected. He was an icon, even when he was alive.

You MUST watch Prince's performance at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction ceremony for George Harrison. They play While My Guitar Gently Weeps and it's one of the greatest guitar performances of all-time.

Yeah the 80's was definitely an era I'll never forget, I was in the Army when this movie "Purple Rain" came out. I and about a couple dozen people sat in a Air Force theater, we sang every song together, I know I watched the film at least twenty times that night until morning.

I love this song. Prince was arguably one of the greatest performers of all time along with the revolution who are his band. This song was the ultimate club song. Also a prolific songwriter. Holy moly was that album HUGE when it came out.... I saw the Purple Rain tour in Houston back in the 80's... He played for about 3 hours without an opening act..... Listen to his 1999 album... "D.M.S.R." or even his earlier music 👍🏻👍🏻

Yes! The 80s music was great music all around. Soooo original. The way Prince dressed was normal for the entertainment industry at that time. They dressed androgynous, a style popular for some big celebs. Men wore eyeliner as well. Prince, Michael Jackson and Rick James were big rivals. Prince movie Purple Rain and the movie album made him an Icon.

Prince transcends genre and taste. Anytime anyone says they don’t get him, I figure they don’t have the capacity for him anyway. He loved his FAM (not fans) cause he knew we had discernible taste. I just seen your "Kiss" reaction so I had to see your reaction to one of my favorite songs. The introit of the guitar on this song is waay pass bad a$$. You have commented on his high voice in his Kiss video and now you get to hear a 'normal' voice, and yes, the highs. I had to stop at around the 2 min mark when you mentioned that you wish you were in that era back then because our club days were insane well, like I mentioned before, that was my era (1980 to about 1985 for me, 21 to 26 years old) and there would be no damn way you with your looks would be standing by the wall on your phone(we did not have cell phones, thank God). No lie, we danced, and a girl like you, there would be guys coming at you at the same time to ask for a dance. In my 20s, before I got married at 26, my brain would explode if I did not go to any of the clubs on a Saturday night in Los Angeles. Rick James, Eddie Murphy, members of Earth Wind and Fire are people I have seen as I went clubbing. Yes, you would have been given a lot of attention and if you are standing on a wall in a club today, I cant explain that.

Mia, The Revolution was Prince’s band and at the time of this video consisted of members Wendy (Guitar), Lisa (Keyboard/Piano), Matt “Dr” Fink (Keyboards), Bobby Z. (Drums/Percussion) & Mark Brown (Bass Guitar). The band members changed periodically over the years. You need to watch “Purple Rain” which is loosely based on Prince’s life as an upcoming musician in Minneapolis. It was released summer of 84’. He was already a star but this movie & album made him a worldwide superstar.

1984... I was a freshman in high School then... as for Queen, they were out before but still making albums at this time... Prince and the Revelution were Prince and his band, not a separate band... and i am a bonfire metal head but first a .musician, Prince was one of the greatest artist in history, and musicians... one of the greatest guitarists as well... I was, and still am into Metallica, Megadeath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dio, Ozzy, etc then but still listened to Prince for his geniuses...and I'm not nor ever will never ashamed to admit that!
