Not everyone is motivated primarily by a desire for survival. It seemed clear to me that most of the elves, king included, would rather have died and gone extinct than violate their oaths and ethical obligations. Suffering to do what is right. Living by principle rather than by necessity. Some people place other things as more important than their survival and well-being. In this case, the king's position does make sense. In their history, the elves almost completely wiped out the human race. Their oath was more to prevent the elves from becoming genocidal monsters than it was made from a desire to protect humans. They rather would be wiped out than have the blood of billions on their hands, because they knew that would be the end result if they went to war again. That's not to say Nuada was wrong or unreasonable. I totally understand his position. But the King wasn't wrong either. Sometimes neither side is wrong; they just have irreconcilable differences that prevent them from coexisting.

Looking back theres a big plot hole in this movie. If the prince and his sister are linked then wouldnt the kings order to kill him effectively also end her life? And if the sister was willing to die (which it seems like she was) why didnt she just stab herself right then and there to kill the prince and end his crusade? Why wait until the end of the movie?
@gwac06095 ай бұрын
she didn't have the strength to do it cause killing yourself is a horrible thing to do and despite the path her brother chose it was still her brother and she accepted her father doing it despite how much despair it brings her it will be nothing compared to the despair he would feel and at the end she knew hellboy and his friends weren't going to kill her brother cause they didn't want to be responsible for her death so nualla knowing her brother was never going to stop made the heartbreaking choice to just end it.
@mattkingsbury94594 ай бұрын
Not a plot hole, but definitely a central plot point. Yes, King Balor's order meant the death of Nuala, as well. And Nuada actually calls her out on this: "Are you content with your king's verdict?" "I am." Nuada wasn't a self-interested tyrant; literally his entire motivation is, "I have returned to save my people." That now includes Nuala, as well, as he's literally just heard her telling him, "I am ready to die." As to the second part, there is some plot contrivance going on there, but there is also the point to be made that Nuala was simply non-violent; her and King Balor were advocating the Elves and magical races fade away slowly and peacefully, not through bloodshed. It's only at the end of the film where Nuala is really forced to take action.
