Prince Oberyn Martell Vs Mountain Fight Scene - Game of Thrones ( GOT) - Season 4 Episode 8

"The Mountain and the Viper" is the eighth episode of the fourth season of HBO's fantasy television series Game of Thrones, and the 38th overall. The episode was written by series co-creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, and directed by Alex Graves. It aired on June 1, 2014.
In Game of Thrones Season 4 Episode 8 during the trial of Tyrion Lannister for the accuse of the murder of King Jofry, He asked for the Trial by combat. Here Prince Oberyn Martell of Drone comes to his aid and agreed to fight for him... There he finds his sister Elia Martell's murderer The Mountain, What happens next you will see in this video....
Everyone except Cersei and Tywin was rooting for Oberyn in this tense duel. The Viper is certainly a skilled fighter (or shall I say dancer, since those moves looked more like ice dancing with a spear) as he dodged and ducked the Mountain for most of the fight. It was quiet a spectacle to watch and the moment Oberyn knocked down Gregor Clegane was one of the most victorious of the season.
Shortly before his trial by combat is to begin, Tyrion discusses his chances with his brother, Jaime. When Tyrion is taken outside, he has a brief conversation with his champion, Oberyn, who is confident. Ser Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane arrives shortly thereafter, and the trial commences. During the fight, Oberyn demands the Mountain admit to raping and murdering his sister, Elia, and her two children. Oberyn lands several skillful attacks on the Mountain, seemingly toying with the much larger man. He knocks the Mountain to the ground and lands a near-fatal blow. Oberyn then screams at the Mountain to confess, hoping the Mountain will admit that it was Tywin who gave the order. As Oberyn circles him, he lets his guard down and the Mountain knocks him to the ground, knocks his teeth out and then gouges out his eyes while confessing to the murder of Elia and her children, and subsequently crushes Oberyn's skull with his hands, killing him. The Mountain then collapses to the ground from his wounds. Tywin rises and sentences Tyrion to death for regicide.

I cannot quite co-sign. I do not believe you can remove the desire for revenge from the overall endeavor. He was there strictly for this reason. He didn’t just want the Mountain to die. He wanted him to confess AND name the man behind him. He simply failed at his overall goal. But his goal WAS revenge with a sprinkle of justice.

His first misstep was drinking before the fight. No good fighter would do this. His second misstep was expecting a confession from someone who would be killed for giving one anyway. His third misstep was getting too close to the Mountain when he was still alive. And his final misstep was not retaliating after he got tripped. This scene frustrates me for those reasons, since Oberyn was a skilled fighter who was always confident but never so much to the point of being stupid, careless, or over/underestimating himself or his opponent. It just seems it was made for shock value rather than the easily satisfying payoff it could have been. I guess it was necessary for Tyrion to face more adversity and have the audience be taken by surprise, but this fight was a pretentious and heavy-handed way of making that happen.

@@BigBurg97 Yeah if you drink regularly and are going up against an opponent that is slower than you the reaction time effect loss of drinking would not be too big a deal. However it is still a terrible idea because that little effect could make all the difference. If I was him I would have just stood back and waited for my poison to finish him nothing the mounted said would have stopped tywin and tywin would probly have gotten Oberyn killed shortly after the fight anyway for pointing at him and calling him out the way Oberyn did. In the end Oberyn is still my hero lol just cant believe his woman saw him die like that my Girl was so disturbed by the scene. I went and played my favorite fighting game let myself and my team fall back and start loosing on purpose just so I could Imagin I was in Oberyn's shoes right as he got tripped. Then we proceeded to win the game. VENGENCE!!!!!!!!!!!! is SOOOOO SWEEEEEEEET. just not for mortal beings ;).

@@alilweeb7684 Nah, according to Jaime, there are “three men alive in the seven kingdoms who could best him.” This is a sign of Jaime’s ignorance/arrogance, but it’s quite easy to figure out who these three men are with the context we have. One is Barristan Selmy. Kind of a layup. I think the other two are the Clegane brothers, as Jaime would’ve been exposed to their strength for the majority of his life, and has an almost shocked look on his face during this fight as Oberyn beats the mountain. During this fight, Jaime realizes that even when he had his hand he still was quite far from being the best. Fighting Brienne is another part of this character dev for Jaime. It allows him to separate himself from his sword, and actually have an identity outside of “Kingslayer” Oops I ranted about Jaime Lannister. But anyway I think it’s important to his character that he ISNT the best knight alive in his prime. He’s just arrogant and believes he is, or that he’s at least close.

The ambush in which Robb Stark captured Jaime almost backfired horribly, as when Jaime realized the battle was lost he rallied his personal retinue and cut a path through Robb's army of 6,000 to reach him, nearly killing him if it weren't for 3 of Robb's bodyguards giving their lives to save him, and Jaime's sword getting stuck in one of their necks. one of the best fight choreographies in movies/series, the whole outcome is really shocking, especially because it conveys empathy about oberyn throughout the fight, avenging his sister and nephews, and beyond the fantasy of a man surviving to so many spears, but oberyn was not interested in the death of the mountain, the ending is surprising and the scream of the wife does not give you time to think about the unreality but about the injustice that poor oberyn could not achieve what he wanted, the confession.

That confession did still help Oberyn get the last laugh. It was one of those secrets in Westeros that everyone knew he had killed them, very possibly on Tywin's orders, but it was never confirmed. This confession confirmed everything and caused House Lannister to lose a lot of face because of it, so yes, in a way, Oberyn got what he wanted

The thing is here - both in the good the bad and the ugly and GOT - Both men *had* to talk. They were not there to fight and win and survive - they were there to take revenge. That means that you want to punish your adversary and maybe even make him feel what you felt in the past. You want to enjoy the ride as you make him suffer. That is why revenge is dangerous. If it was just justice he wanted he could have hired an assasin in secret or sped up the process of killing him here in tournament. But he did not.

An awesome subversion of expectations. We all wanted Oberyn to win and the way they pulled the rug out from under us, at the last minute, was brilliant. An example of excellent writing when the show was at its peak. I know some people think "character I like dying = bad writing," but that's a simple thought by simple people.

I actually fucking hated the way Oberyn dies here. Somebody as agile as he is shown to be wouldn’t fall from having a single foot swept, and, even if he did, would be rolling away from the mountain the instant he hits the ground. I’m an uncoordinated fat fuck, but even I make sure that my shoulders and hips hit the ground first if I slip on some ice and go ass-over-teakettle, and that I stiffen my neck to make sure I don’t crack my head. Maybe I’m really nitpicking, but I would have much preferred the mountain actually grab his ankle, or the opening of his boot, or something.

I think its interesting that they removed the "crowd" as well. In the books the mountain accidently slashes some stable boy then gets annoyed at his screaming and beheads him. But for this fight they have it staged so the crowd is nice and safe in the stands.

In the books Oberyn uses Manticore venom thickened with sorcery on his spear blade to poison him for a very slow, painful death. His screams of pain were heard for days in the Red Keep while the poison slowly spread through his body Tyrion even said "If anyone deserves to die screaming, it's The Mountain."

Not really, the scene is not that well made, they just use camera shifts to mask how underwhelming the choreography actually is. Game of Thrones never had decent swort fight sequences, other than a few exceptions like the fight at Tower of Joy. The Mountain basically swings that sword like he's holding a battle axe. In Game of Thrones, swords are like polearms, characters swing them like clubs and it just looks funy.

I watched every episode of seasons 1-5 back when they premiered on HBO (2011ish?). I was so dialed in and enthralled with this show. It's been almost 10 years since I've watched anything GOT. A friend was talking about the show recently, and I've never forgot this scene. It sticks in my mind above everything else.
