While I'm certain they didn't have an affair, Penny always has a special place in his heart. She was everything Elizabeth couldn't be; free, fun, not afraid to show her emotions, and lively. They had their own share of loss and frustrations in their marriage; Penny's husband Norton also left the family for a mistress in the Bahamas only to come back when it fizzled out. Then again, it's hard to feel bad for Elizabeth either, given that she kept Porchey close because of his dependability. It gave her a taste of how Margaret must've felt not to have Peter, for Charles not to have Camilla, and for Diana not to have Charles. Having physical affairs is one thing, but Elizabeth really depended on that connection and it must've been hard to see Phillip have it with someone else.

This is so well said and accurate - you made some good points here! All the people you mentioned were very hurt and frustrated by their loved ones but either commoner or royal it's always better to slow down, get to know who you are compatible with and most of all look for the things that connect your hearts and heads together for the sake of LOVE - sincere love. From the books I've read Diana was warned against marrying Charles because of the age difference and nothing in common and she was according to her grandmother and mother unfit for the position. Margaret maybe could have flat out walked away from royal life and married Peter Townsend. It's a shame that Porchester and Elizabeth didn't meet first when she was only 13 as she did with Philip. Life has its OWN plans for us....

I felt that elizabeth had a soft corner for porchey because phillip continuously hurted her in many occasions with words it affected her somehow deeply and i dont know whether he cheated elizabeth by having affairs . I don't know about the series but by your words I can understand porchey also had pains and failed relationship .and also elizabeth porchey love towards horse is also acts as another reason that made them get closer to each other's

On September 11 the queen was photographed crying but it wasn't for the victims of The Twin Towers in the US her tears were probably for Porchester who passed away at the same time in a nearby hospital. Years later the queen met Irishman lord Patrick pinchett and the queen was obsessed with him! He worked very closely with the queen at Buckingham Palace every day. When he passed away the queen had a shrine made to him!! He was buried with the royals! It was an interesting story to read. Rumors were bad about Porchester being the father of Andrew and Pinchett was rumored to be Edwards father! The read was fascinating but I wondered if it was true? 🎉🎉🎉 I also wonder what Prince Philip thought of the shrine? That was a bit much and to be buried in London not his home in Northern Ireland?!!

I don’t know if anyone else noticed this, but it seems like Peter Morgan just had Philip shift his affections from Diana in S4 to Penny in S5. I know irl the tabloids always suspected that Philip had an affair with Penny. I don’t know if I’d go that far (there isn’t any concrete evidence of that happening), but he definitely had a thing for younger women. They became lifelong friends after the death of her daughter and both loved carriage driving. Penny was also one of the few people who got to attend Philip’s funeral.

Prince Philip was kind hearted and sympathetic towards Penelope. The prince wanted her to have her passion and escape from her blah routines probably. The real life Penelope is taking care of her daughter's little legacy with a charity and Penelope also runs Mountbatten Broadlands, I think. Penelope did indeed take Philip's advice and she started carriage racing! Good for her!

Penny Mountbatten, Lady Romsey. At the time wife of Lord Ivar Mountbatten, Phillip's distant cousin and godson. I don't know if they mention it in the Crown or not but the marriage problems they had were due to the fact Lord Ivar was a closeted gay man. Penny and Ivar divorced and he ended up marrying another man years later.

​​​@@Myne1001 I read very little about Lady Romsey but this is new to me. I can't judge him - to each his own. Ivan Mountbatten was interesting. I admire how Lady Romsey tried to keep the memory of her daughter alive with a foundation and the Broadlands open to the public.
