Yeah the record labels don't sign true artists anymore. But the indie labels release stuff by true artists sometimes. In my opinion. I think commercial success and artistry have really been separated over the years. Prince was genius

Hey 👑. I'm so glad that you reacted to the " Extended" version of the song/ video, it has gotten on my last nerves when I've seen other reactors just play the " edited" version, And Im like that's only half of the song. LoL

That was his band The Revolution. They were with him in his drama film Purple Rain. Which this video is made from. When he was first signed (round '78) he played every instrument on his first couple records!! He was a badass

"When Doves Cry" was the lead single from the Purple Rain album. It went to the top of the charts in the US in 1984. The song was huge. The album dropped the summer before my senior year in high school and you could hear the songs from it were everywhere you went that year.

Fan of Prince since the early 80s. I watched an interview with his sound engineer (may Prince RIP), and she discussed all the changes he made to this song, all the instruments, the tracks...and it wasn't working. Kept adding. Worse. So he pared it down and took out the bassline -VERY rare! And it still hit #1. Prince was a genius in every sense of the word. Thanks for this reaction. New sub! (if a few months late). Edit to add: if you haven't watched the movie Purple Rain, it's a MUST. All the songs make a plot to the movie, which is why so many of these videos look like they're from a movie. The movie was iconic to all things 1980s. And Prince...well, genius. Said that before.

He has a ton of bangers, so you don’t have to decide your favorite. 😉 And this came out when I was young, so I can’t remember when I first saw it, but I must say it’s been a while since I’ve seen the extended video. This song is from the movie Purple Rain. A lot of great songs in there. I love The Beautiful Ones and Let’s Go Crazy.

This song was one of his biggest singles of his career. This and ''Kiss'' was consider has his two signatures songs of his career and his two most reconnasable songs of Prince. This song spent five weeks at n.1 in US in 1984. This song was the first single of his album ''Purple Rain''. ''Purple Rain'' was his fattest selling album (25 millions since his released in 1984) and was also his most successful in terms of singles, with the first four singles all reaching the top 10 in US, including the massive n.1 ''When Doves Cry'' and ''Let's Go Crazy'' and the three first singles remains three massive worldwide hits. Prince was his highest of his success with this album. He continued to make many successfuls albums after that, including the critically acclaimed ''Sign o' the Times''.

I heard when they were mixing this song Prince was not happy in the studio and the engineer was like well what do you want to see happen and Prince just pulled the fader for the bass guitar track completely out and stared back at the engineer.
