@Amygondor10 күн бұрын
you can terach a dog to drink/submerge in water to calm down and refocus. It wasn't a sensory overload, it's a learned conduct. As in: "owner told me water calms me down and makes things better, and would you believe it, it works! Humans are geniuses!" The thing is, water does make things better when you're neorvous/ angry/ scared. Every dog owner should teach his or her dog a "drink" command; it doesn't matter if the dog drinks the whole water tank or just smells the water for a few seconds, the trick has worked because the dog found something better to do with its senses than harass other dogs.

Great explanation Joel on why extinction will not work with reactivity, and may I add other unwanted behaviors like jumping on ppl because the dogs are getting an endorphin rush reward, so the punishment must be stronger than the endorphin rush to stop & prevent the unwanted behaviors. Dogs Teach Dogs in the right situation is so beneficial. A friend of my mine has this sweet smart wonderful mini mix whose sister was completely shut down, afraid of everyone & everything. There is so much that I can do to teach & reinforce confidence paired with the mini hanging out with my Mal Mix Amica has taught her how to be a confident pup as well as taught her other skills, like having a good recall, sit, down, stay, fetch, etc.

We have always allowed our older dogs to correct our new pups. They do a better job than we do. I have an adult Shepherd with a high prey drive who doesn't "speak dog" very well. Our Cane Corso gave multiple warnings, which were ignored. The interaction ended with our Shepherd pinned to the ground. She is MUCH more respectful now. There was one small puncture wound but if the Cane Corso had wanted to do real damage, she could have. I love watching our pack dynamic. Over 50 years of having dogs, multiple dogs at a time, a natural leader has always emerged.

How much of this is lack of exercise? I have an ESS who has been well socialized but she will occasionally get into this same exact state(maybe 20% of the time we pass a dog on the street) However, that number is significantly higher when her activity has been dampened in days prior. My conclusion from my experience has been that these working breeds need vast amounts of exercise, otherwise, no matter how well socialized they are, they are going to be looking for a job to do and in many cases this manifests in this type of reactivity. Her reactions are so visceral. She will bark, lunge for a split second and then immediately tuck her tail and look at me. But it’s that initial visceral reaction that I can never seem to help her get rid of. She is always well rewarded when she remains neutral as well.
@Asto50812 күн бұрын
Which begs the question why people get dog breeds with such high energy levels if they cannot give them appropriate release.
@jankysail1712 күн бұрын
That can most likely be attributed to simple ignorance the majority of the time. It’s too easy for people to decide one day that they want a dog but not be well-versed in the subject of actually raising a dog, let alone the types of breeds and the differences in behavior, training requirements, and necessary exercise. And there’s too many breeders willing to sell their dogs without proper vetting and/or education of the potential buyers.

@@Asto508 I adopted a lovely little mutt from the shelter. They said she was an African Village dog/Africanis (I'm in Cape Town, South Africa). What the DNA test said was a 66% Malinois and 33% Australian cattle dog. Energy off the scale, reactive, massive prey drive and smarter than a lot of people. I can see dog behavior issues rising exponentially. As more and more people are replacing child-rearing with pet ownership, they're going to start assigning human emotions and needs to them in an attempt to fulfill their parenting urges. It's why more people think they should be able to bring their dogs everywhere, even when it's unsanitary. And God forbid you ask them to actually control and train their dogs. They think being assertive will hurt the dogs' feelings. Good luck, normal humans.
@StarkK9Academy12 күн бұрын
Totally agree. Dogs in strollers in stores barking at ppl or service dogs is such a pet peeve of mine. (1) Only Service dogs should be in stores. (2) If you’re putting your dog in a stroller train it so it has great manners. I wish store managers would tell owners of bad mannered dogs that they are welcomed back when their dog is properly trained, until then the dog is not allowed in the store.
@jennabennett423612 күн бұрын
The problem, as I see it, isn't necessarily treating dogs like children. In my experience, raising the 2 is actually very similar. Raise them both with manners and respect, with rules and boundaries and limitations and they'll, more than likely, turn into decent, well-rounded adults.

Yesterday on my first try out with the regular dog collar, he earned his way through the door and outside. He did great with the neighbor dog barking, corrected him. Learned the butt jerk.. which is awesome! He went on ignoring that, saw the cat, I corrected him for lunging etc... that worked. We continued to walk... experienced dogs barking.. seeing adog at a glass door barking, he lunged got corrected. We were doing fabulously until my neighbor who was rustling leaves invisible to sight across the alley made him go nuts. I acted calm jerking him back, But he went coo coo even more he went backwards in front of me nearly pulling out of the collar. I got him, don't even know how, put him on his side. I don't know if this was right but I was a tad shook up that he almost escaped. Had he done that I would never had been able to get him and he could have attacked my neighbor. This has me very nervous now about that collar which was tight... but too close for comfort nearly escaping. I bought a martingale collar for large breed which he is. And too.. I've purchased a gentle lead. Online at your suggestion and link. What in the world do you do if the dog gets away outside? We have begun the come commands last night and this morning. He gets distracted at the moment but he is 90% there in the backyard.

I'd work on getting a pretty solid recall in different environments if you can recreate it to an extent. But it sounds like maybe just more exposure and desensitization may help too. How old is the dog? Is it new to you? What breed? Lots of things could be a factor I suppose.. I only ask because the leaves rustling seems like it got a pretty wild reaction for just leaves outta sight. You may (and I know people hate them in general ) wanna get a front pull harness like an easy walk. It won't turn you into a sled and your dog is gonna have trouble pulling out of it if it's on correctly. Then you can fade it out later.
