1999 man. no record has ever hit me as hard as that one did. it was like opening the door to a new world. then when you get older and dabble in music yourself you hear brand new doors open up that you couldn't see before. detuning hi hats and minimal hi hat patterns. snares that just popped. made drum machines sound human after all. synth voicings that made even the simplest of rifts seem so thick to the ears. basslines that were oftenlayerd to achieve affect, but only on close critical listening would you pick it up. his clever use of guitar, especially his rhythm guitar. the melting pot he created with the band. a double album that hasn't been matched in my world till he did sign O' the times. the lyrical content of the songs of 1999 which spoke to the youth, directly. pure genius, in a time when musicians had to be genius to have long-standing careers. Prince was simply automtic amazing and he is missed so much. Legend.

I believe that Prince's vision was to demonstrate his virtuosity to his record company. You have to remember back then the record companies was calling the shots. Prince probably saw it as leverage to develop those groups. The Vanity 6. single Nasty Girl was absolutely amazing. ..The Time 7779311 was incredible .that album I used to play and dance to with my boys back in the day, Since starting into the world of show business, Prince's music back in 1982 was a real stepping stone for me. In Purple Rain he made Morris who he was. So he wasn't thrown off to much with how Morris's character was percieved. Plus I personally believed that Prince didn't expect the movie to take off as it did. But, in any case he was prepared for the outcome. The movie turned out to be a great movie. Especially for the time.

Listening to this show again. It struck me how critics would suggest that Prince was very audacious to think he could be a director, script writer and producer in film. Looking at The Time specifically, Prince : wrote their "script", he directed them, and produced them. He did the same for himself and his band and Vanity 6 (less successfully for various reasons) He may not have been as successful in film but he had reason to believe that he could be because of his past successes. He had little if any training in any of those capacities yet he was very successful with The Time and was very good at spotting talent and bringing out the best in others. We also know that Prince was very focused and soaked up knowledge and understanding like a sponge so we know that "Purple Rain" was an in-depth learning experience. Prince's greatest difficulty was discerning when to trust those outside of himself who had experience in areas where he had little to none. And that, for me anyway, is fully understandable.'

You don't understand the darkness and allure of Prince from the 1999 era. Morris and the Time were different as in a different manifestation of Prince;s persona but not a threat. The contrast was reaching a wider more diverse audience. A bridging so to speak of cultures. 1999 to me was Princes most innovative album ever, A-u-t- omatic is something that has never been conceived before or since, completely unique in it's tonality and phrasing and dark textures yet romantically seducing, Purple Rain, although a good album of work to me was disappointing creatively as I found it to be a water downed version of 1999. To me 1999 was Prince's last true edgy artistic body of work with true innovation.

Star Mac Actually "Morris" the character is an invention of Prince AND Morris Day. Susan Rogers said in the studio Prince talked & behaved like the character of Morris & was very funny all the time. He told her he & Morris started that character in high school so NO, Prince was far from jealous. Prince wrote most of their songs (Jamie Starr) & for all his groups would record most of it & sing most of it then give it to the various groups to follow line by line. That's a LOT of work. He was a Genius!

While they did have a clash of egos during certain points, once Morris left the camp, he had quite a few movie/tv & music opportunities on the table that, for one reason or another, didn't exactly pan out. Starr Company, one that would benefit from that said it. We don't know if that is real. And I expect NOT, because one of the members had passed away. Prince was funny like that. If he didn't have the whole group he wouldn't do the project. Example [ the band that played on the CD] Welcome to America couldn't tour playing the songs on the CD, so prince didn't release the CD because he couldn't get the whole group together. It was a matter of principle to him, he didn't need the money. He already had so much money that he couldn't spend it all, after he had 26 property's and a whole Island, he was still rich. So NO, wishful thinking though.

I gotta disagree with you about Prince vs the Morris Day Character - and I know this is a super old video now, it just popped up for me so I watched it again. But man I really think a lot of why Prince was so massive was the character he played in Purple Rain - the emotional journey we go on with him. No it’s not written in a very sophisticated way, but I can definitely see how audiences adored Prince for how he was in that movie. Now I do think the Time and Morris would have been way bigger if Prince had let them do their thing alongside him - but everything happens for a reason I guess. But Ive heard others talk about how had the Time and Jam and Lewis not been kicked out of the circle basically, if he’d let them do their thing within the Paisley Park realm or on his imprint, that could have been the beginning of a new Mecca for music, far beyond what it was in that one period. Definitely agree with that part. But as much as I love Morris Day as a character, my heart roots for a Prince character so much more because of his look and aura and what he was working towards, the greater good, but still flawed in the most human ways. Anyways sorry I know this is old now, just had to respond to that one thing lol I love Morris, and I know everyone did, but I think many of us still wanted Prince to win in the end. And the songs he had for himself were better as far as artistic merit, musically speaking. Computer Blue is one of the sickest songs ever written, the solos and the movements in the music, it’s pure genius. I think the storyline we follow with those tracks during those nights he plays the club, it’s so brilliant. He took the idea of a rock opera and reversed it - actually made a movie out of but based it around the album which writes the story for the movie and holds some of the weight of the plot on its own. God it’s so brilliant lol.

Prince was the beginning of Minneapolis sound... crazy music: lady cab driver. No need to say more its the start then Terry and Jimmy went on their own to fly and Janet skyrocketed ... prince made a mistake to fire them but it was good for music ideas. Morris could be a good as he would...Prince opened the door for him and he exploded as a character as suited for him. Prince was the idea behind it as a further step given to Morris to get to the next level. Ideas came from Rick James too and there was a battle whose best...prince got him via MTV without being too interested, MJ was the favourite for kids, Prince was the revolutioner for adults. Prince asked Morris: Do you sing? and the story was written for The Time cause the drummer was JellyBean...

@@avace917 yeah, now Morris is saying he played drums on the Times album. But he has said a couple of times in interviews that the album The Time was finished when he first saw it.
@avace917 Жыл бұрын
@@saa9099 I know. If you listen to Cloreen Bacon Skin which IS INDEED Morris, the drums do sound similar to Controversy, Let's Work and several of The Time's records

It's odd at how I hear people trying to say that The Time had better sets than Prince but yet they fail to realize that ALL of Morris's character and The Time's swag was actually orchestrated BY Prince...lol, smh. It didn't make P. feel threatened in the least bit. All it did was help him prove that EVERYTHING he touched was that deal!! And I like how Jimmy Jam breaks it down that if it weren't for Prince he wouldn't be the producer he is today. Also Terry Lewis also gave Prince tha tag credit. Yet, I hear the subtle Prince haters say stuff about how The Time made him feel threatened. SMH. Morris even mentioned about how when they first shot a video on Cool and he didn't even know what to do. Prince was the one that told him to pit one hand in his pocket and dont remove it and just stay cool and calm about it.

When Graffiti Bridge came out, Prince said that The Time were the only band he's ever been afraid of. I've even heard audio of him saying it. There were even reviews where critics were saying that The Time were better. I know 2 people who saw the 1999 tour at Radio City Music Hall in nyc and The Time didn't play that night. He took them off the bill in major cities. Just sayin

You're right with your speculations...on Prince and Time...Time is Prince monster (creation)...to where he challenged against himself...All of them are Minneapolis...the SOUND. They just brought their Boyhood ways from (out of) the basement...invading Hollywood...the world. All of them just caught ya off guard to where ya was not Expecting to expect...Performing live and being original is their MESSAGE...which makes their presence...NATURAL...All of them... US/NC c/c

Nubias You clearly haven't listened to MJ's 90s output. "They don't care about us" alone is riskier than anything Prince did.

PURPLE RAIN, iz life. Good, vs. evil. Substance, vs. fluff. Conservative, vs. Liberalism. Black vs. white. So herez where ur wrong. By da time of PURPLE RAIN, Princez audience, had xpanded, & while lotzo SO CALLED white folkz, woulda been n LOVE wit DA SHOW, preSINted by THE TIME, Prince woulda given those liliez, dat Rock & Roll, they knew & loved, PLUS! So, n Prince, they woulda gotten their Mick Jagger, their David Bowie, ( Especially during COMPUTER BLUE, wit Wendy suckin Princez guitar. ) BUTT also sum Jamez Brown, sum Jimi Hendrix, & sum Sly Stone. Uh...... THE TIME wuz da bizness, BUTT Prince wuz NEVER 1, dat would steer away from competition. #PAUSEYOCLAWZ

Back then people (strangely) didn't know all of the music was prince. The public saw the time and on stage even the revolution admitted the time was killing them on stage. The Time were more raw at the time (no pun intended)

@MrAzmatMahmood No one has to convince anyone of the truth,you are just in denial,like a great many fans who do not let truth guide them. Like I said you are not centered,that means little to you now,but in 10 years or so hopefully you will understand what it's all about. Doesn't matter what you do,truth will never dissipate,truth,playing an instrument gives you direct control over the music. How can you change that? It's not rocket science. If I use a blues scale,and for some reason decide to switch to mixolydian instead,I would need to have direct control of these scales,when it came to the music Michael did not have that control. If it were vocals,of course he had that control. A voice is a instrument,albeit a biological instrument. When it comes to forming the base of most songs which are made with instruments,yes they are the end all,and be all,when controlling the sound,it is truth,how ever much you shun it like a vampire running from the dawn. I am not trying to take anything away from Mike,he was bad,the world as we know it can not be imagined without his contributions!
