'just be good to me' was one of those monster mega-jams that was everywhere and loooooonnnnngggg mixes on black radio weekend party jam slots, with extended sections of the bare beat breakdown, late in the evening. wdmt Cleveland played the hell out of all of the sos band songs. 'no one's gonna love you' was the other radio mega-hit on black radio that eclipsed the other songs on the radio, at the time. some of the greatest music of the era.

Business wise, if Jam & Lewis was under the control of Prince then it means they were under contract ( you see how much they were getting paid) and as cold as it sounds Prince probably knew in the back of his mind how talented they were, and the only way to get out of the contract was to get fired. He probably wasn’t surprised at how successful they were. And I’m sure they understood later in life because they had people working under them under contracts, but they probably paid them their worth. Prince created the Time and the Morris Day whole persona was really Prince’s alter ego, so behind the scenes he controlled the whole Time image and music .

The story is he fired them to see if they would flop so that they would come back begging for their jobs, which he was gonna do. THEN he changed his mind & only wanted Terry back. Terry was like f u dude & kept his handshake deal with Jimmy. I think once SOS was a hit, Prince left it alone & moved forward. Building for "Purple Rain" & destroying The Time in the same stroke.

Prince anonymously donated towards many charities and has donated to many peoples causes, to includes a independent film maker and one who've produced a small screen movie that alledgely lead Judge Joe Brown onto receiving exposures and eventually onto a TV Judge, California residents received Solar powered energy, and prince not once-in-a-lifetime ever talked about it...!

I high-key think Prince was not feeling Janet Jackson mainly BECAUSE Jam&Lewis brought her under their wings and made her the Icon she is with a string of groundbreaking albums (Control, RN1814, janet., TVR, etc.). Prince ALSO had a rivalry with MJ so those two things combined REALLY MADE Prince NOT BE INTO Janet.

Prince did Jimmy and Terry a favor by firing them because they went on to be big time producers making more than 150 dollars a show which was nothing even back then. I once heard that Prince paid his band members low wages which makes me wonder how did he ever keep his bands members from leaving him.

An old bass player told me once: "I'll be your road ho for little money but if you want exclusivity it's gonna cost you more." That $150 blew my mind even for that time, those venues. It wasn't a tour of east coast bars with four guys sleeping in car to save money.

That snow storm in ATL bit made me laugh way harder than I should have. I was stationed in Augusta, GA for acouple years. A single snowflake slowly falling never touching the ground, was a harbinger of the city shutting down. Granted in late 2010, they did get like 8in, more in the upper northern areas. Augusta was frozen for like 3 days.

That story may be right, however, it is suspect since while being a longterm resident of Minneapolis watching how Prince handled himself after he finally moved up quickly with Warner Bros. to call some shots, everyone that he produced was almost a color clone of himself, including Morris Day who was the drummer for Grand Central. He would have probably produced his bass player Andre Cymone if both egos didn't clash and he would capitulate to Prince's control freak attitude. That is who should have been second in line after Prince to break out, since they were part of the same band Grand Central and they too look like cousins. Then third, Prince was dabbling witth producing Sue Ann Carwell, who was a pretty, high yellow, light skin soulful sister that could have been Prince's sister. Whatever the politics that caused both Andre and Sue Anne to go their separate ways, seemed to the rest of us to be different from what appeared to be the color conscious politics that Prince employed dealing with other talent. Prince then turned to other light skin artists, Sheila E., Vanity 6, and Appolonia Cotero. Morris became the front man for Prince's alter ego clown show, the Time, whose music was way away from the product being heard in Nightclubs by Flyte Time who had arguably two of the best R&B Urban singers in the Twin Cities, Alexander O'Neal and Cynthia Johnson, who should have reached Diva status under the right management but only recorded one popular dumbass dorky song, TAKE ME TO FUNKYTOWN! However, what we could see was that the proven talent was milk chocolate i n complexion and what Prince appeared to be attempting to persistently introduce was high yellow acts. So to us residents of the city his moves struck us as color conscious since neither Prince, nor Morris Day, nor their group played regularly in any clubs in Minneapolis of St. Paul. Both cities practiced their own brand of de facto segregation so there were only a hand full of clubs that black musicians could play, and you could count those on one hand with a few fingers left over. You see that purple coat Prince is wearing, it was made by the talented young lady whose basement he was living in at the time, the oldest sister of Andre Cymone (Anderson), named Sylvia who was the stage costume designer and seamstress for many of the Minneapolis -St. Paul acts, Vanity6, Time, most of Prince's wear, all the way up to Mint Condition. Flyte Time was already a popular and viable group while Prince and the group Grand Central were still playing High School Hops and Church basements. Prince was being groomed to come out of the Anderson basement as a performer by one of Andres older brothers, Eddie Anderson, the CEO of the fledgling Mighty Midwest Entertainment. To make a long story short Prince betrayed Eddie, and went with Owen Husney in a contract Eddie pleaded with him not to sign, because it reduced Prince to owning nothing not even his own name. That would ultimately come to pass a few years later, since Prince wanted to be a star so bad he signed the contract. However, years later he would have to walk around with a sign and calling himself the Artist formerly known as Prince. The animosity towards Eddie for not going along with Prince, and being right on a number of occasions was always a competitive sore that never healed between the both of them, and also stunted Prince's mind and sense of humanity when he was the first to emerge from that Mighty Midwest Entertainment task force of Grand Central revealing himself further to be a control freak that appeared where intentional or not to be color struck as well. The further Prince got away from the discipline of the Anderson home, mother Bernadette, Eddie, and Andre the more he got further and further out into the O-zone of nuttiness. He had gotten kicked out of his mother's house on the southside of Minneapolis when Andre asked his mother, Bernadette, if he could stay on the northside with them. That house, in hindsight, was like a mini-Motown, because it was so vitally self contained with talent, intelligence, and discipline, and good food, much of which Prince seemed to be missing when his first manager Eddie Anderson approached our company around the corner from their house. Ivory Tower Media Company, which co-produced the R&B radio programming in the Twin Cities, and basically handled all radio advertising for KUXL 1570 AM and Pharaoh Blacks' daily show on that station. Prince would betray Eddie when Eddie arranged to get $20,000 to develop Prince and deliver him and his demo to record labels. The fellow they took the money from was not anyone to play with and Ivory Tower Media;s CEO, T.H. Johnson, who Eddie first approached to get the money for Prince and Eddie's own Mighty Midwest Entertainment Company would be the brother to get the money lending brother to agree to stand down because he had given the money without a contract to a friend who guaranteed the loyalty of his young protege, Prince. That was Eddie, who came to Ivory Tower's office with a sad face when its CEO, T.H. Johnson, told him to straighten his face up and keep it moving because free enterprise did not guarantee anyone success the first time, but when he told him what happened and whose money it was, T.H. no longer had a happy face himself and had to go to the brother and plead for Eddie and most particularly this young unknown teenager who the lender considered to be on the hook as well as Eddie. However, T.H. told him he needed to take the "L" and leave it alone because he knew better with all the contracts he entered with other businesses and that was a dicey conversation that could have gone down hill fast between those two in a matter Johnson had nothing to do with but stepped up because of their mutual friend Eddie Anderson. That was the last of the era where a lot of up and coming black managers in Minneapolis did not sign artists to contracts because most of them could not guarantee they could deliver a contract from a major label, and those artists generally had to leave Minnesota to attain their contracts. However, Eddie was the first to say that he did not believe they had to leave, and that Minneapolis-St. Paul could be a major music production center with a unique sound. He told T.H. Johnson that what happened to him with Prince would never happen again, since Eddie had already read the book THIS BUSINESS OF MUSIC from end to end even before his debacle with Prince. T.H. bought that book from Eddie and had it in his library and loaned it to one of the members of James Brown's band around 1979 and she said that book kept the angry band members quiet all the way to their next gig in El Paso, Texas during the down times of JB before he went to jail for his own drug problems, that book was the bible of music contracts back then. Johnson started writing a manuscript or movie treatment about the beginning of the Minneapolis Sound and the perennial battle after the Prince situation between the white dude Owen Husney and Eddie Anderson, in a manuscript called "THE MUSIC MAKER". Owen who wanted to be considered allegedly "the father of the Minneapolis Sound" was competing with Eddie and attempting to allegedly derail him after Eddie signed his own brother Andre Cymone, and the first girls group that Andre had to produce to get out of his contract with Eddie called THE GIRLS who Owen allegedly poisoned as well. That was an intense battle that rose to the threat of blood letting, and Eddie calling on the initial money lending brother to come back into to aid him, in what that brother apparently reveled in, blood letting. That was an interesting time, with Eddie getting his rest dozing at Ivory Tower Media's office, to get peace he could not get as his mother's house because of the strict contract he had on his own brother, Andre. If Eddie and Owen could have seen the future from a broader standpoint and worked together the Minneapolis Music Production center could have been even much greater than it was as opposed to reflecting only a limited restricted few who had gotten fired by the control freak at Paisley Park.

Cool video. Prince and Morris were in Andre Cymone's band, Grand Central. Flyte Tyme is not The Time. The Time name was never a play off Terry's band name Flyte Tyme. The Time was Morris Day's band. He was cool with the members of Flyte Tyme and wanted some of the members in his band. Yet, (again) Flyte Tyme was Terry Lewis's band. That was something separate and different. Prince and Morris put The Time band together. Again, The Time was Morris's band.

This account is almost accurate. Prince didn't actually fire Terry and Jimmy. He was actually trying to bluff and scare them hoping his threats of firing them would deter them from producing and writing for other acts and it backfired on Prince. In their interview in 2021 on the Breakfast Club, Jimmy said Prince was still paying them a paycheck but then Prince had Jellybean Johnson to call Terry informing him that Prince wanted him back as they were about to start the "Purple Rain" movie and when Terry asked about Jimmy coming back, Jellybean said that Prince didn't want Jam back. According to Jimmy, Terry told Jellybean to tell Prince to blank himself and he shook hands with Jam and agreed that they would split all money from producing and writing 50/50 and that's how it actually began.

Why did Prince fire them? It had nothing to do with being late... But they broke Prince's rule and were caught moonlighting and missed one of Prince's shows. Which is probably why Prince had that rule. If you don't get paid enough to eat, do what you have to, but don't blame others for being fired when you were not only caught but missed the show. It worked out, but they deserved fired. I'm sure they wouldn't be as patient if two members of SOS missed a recording session because they were singing back up vocals for another artist. Just saying..

The Time WAS Prince's band because he signed them AND Morris. He wrote all the music & gave Morris his direction. He was responsible for their payroll & they opened up for HIM. Kapeesh?

Because Prince wrote all the songs for the Time. The group never had a recording project with Warner Brothers. The band was side project that Prince did under his production contest with WB. The guys worked for his production company as a touring band with a set salary

$150 a week, not per night. If you base it on a 40 hour work week that's around minimum wage...Wow..They were truly on that dreaded " Gladiator Tour "..But the big producer in heaven took care of them in the end...🤟🏾🎼🤟🏾

Jimmy and Terry were not slaves. They did not have a recording contest with WB that worked directly for Prince and knew they would not be writing or producing anything so no additional money other than salary. Who works for anyone without knowing what they are going to be paid. If you look you can find a copy of a contract for Prince performing in 1980 and he only received $500.00 if he spilt it with his band he would have only made 90.00 bucks. Not sure why Jam and Lewis would have expected 1,000 of dollars when only a year before P was just pulling down a hundred. They tell this story and leave out the details

I like his music but, Prince was a narcissistic control freak. Possibly a manic bipolar as well. Prince was insecure and always felt threaten by anyone talented or more talented than him. Towards the end a woman broke up with Prince because of his insecurities and drama issues. Prince didn't take it well at all. He texted her, called her, but no reply. Prince even left terrifying voicemail about "You can't leave me. Do you know who I am? I can make your life miserable. You're nothing without me, etc." Prince was THAT insecure about himself. Prince was unpredictable. Just ask anyone who worked for him. Oh... That's right. Prince made everyone who worked for him sign NDA's before working for him. Including his housekeeper. No joke.

Nonsense. Prince said he was scared of The Time live. You realize Prince wrote all the songs for The Time 3 albums. They were not in a band with him and they were fired for missing a show and working with the SOS band which they had agreed they would not work with artist. Why agree to something and then be surprised when you are fired they also never missed a step after and they should be glad they were fired. Not going to go into Alex and his nonsense

This is not completely true. First off, Jimmy & Terry was fired for producing outside of the Prince camp when they were not suppose to. Prince had told them not to produce outside the camp in part because he didn't want them to give away their sound. He wanted things to be in house. Which I totally get to some degree. Jimmy and Terry missing that San Antonio show off the 1999 Tour in 1983 didn't help things, even though they were fined and wasn't fired at that time. The firing happened later. Prince did not solely write all of the songs and did not play all of the instruments on the first 3 albums by The Time. He wrote and played on most of that material. Several collaborators/musicians from his camp contributed as well via writing or playing on some of those songs also including Dez Dickerson, Dr. Fink, Lisa, Morris Day, and Jesse Johnson. Hints why (in part) the album credits went from being under Morris Day & Jamie Starr* to Morris Day & The Starr* Company for Another Starr* Production. Prince didn't want the public to know that Jamie was him and the fact that (although he led the ship) it was still a collective effort. Prince and Morris were in Andre's band, Grand Central.

Susan Rogers and other engineers who worked with him have said none of those guys with exception of Morris on drums are on the two fist albums. Morris and Jessie are playing on the last one. Dez Dickerson worked on the first one and it is noted in the liner note a d in the publishing. Jimmie and Terry have both said they are not playing on any of the first three albums.

@@lql1094 It was the 80''s. Money wasn't moving around and being valued as as well as made like it is in 2023. I'm saying this to give some context in regards to it all. To some degree, Alex was right. I think it was more to it.
