There is an official biography of CL Franklin written with the consent and participation of his daughter Erma, who died not long after it was published. It's called "Singing in a Strange Land" by Nick Salvatore. In the book, Erma acknowledged that CL fathered at daughter by a 12 year old girl he met at the church he pastored in Memphis. Erma and her siblings found out about this half-sister some time in the sixties. This girl was conceived not long after Erma was born. Salvatore implies that Barbara Franklin knew about the child, but stayed with CL and had three more children with him. There is no mention in the book about what CL thought of his daughter Aretha having a baby at the age of 12. Erma is quoted as saying that Aretha, "suffered in silence" during her pregnancy. She named that son Clarence, after her father. Clarence is schizophrenic and requires constant care. She would have another son at age 14. She was out of school more than she was attending school because she toured with her dad. Another detail that is disturbing is that when they traveled together on those gospel tours in the fifties, CL kept Aretha in his hotel room, even though there were woman singers with him whom she could-and should- have roomed with. Stories like this add up to bad news. It's really sad.
