From what I gathered from Caine's explanation (to anyone reading this comment, please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong or share your own theories), I think he misunderstood the others when they said they wanted a way out - he thought they just wanted a way to leave the GROUNDS, not the WORLD. So he set out to build more maps outside of the grounds for them to explore and made an "exit" door as a sort of warp between said maps. But he didn't have any ideas for the other maps, so he either abandoned the project entirely or took a break to try to come up with something - hence why there was an "exit" door, but nowhere to go.

They put on a headset and got sucked inside the computer I think and there is only 1 way to leave but jts. Really hard to leave not even Caine knows how to leave, He built maps inside of the world so they wouldn't break or go insane, The exit is that you have to find a bunch if things and gather everything by the computer and place it in but when you try jumping in which Is what you do to escape when you go closer to it ur heart starts ripping out and it's trying to stop you. THIS IS A THEORY

Fun fact: Caine is an AI (Gooseworx the creator of TADC mentioned) and is most likely trying to keep people from going insane and doesn't know how to since he doesn't know what the humans want and doesn't understand them, he made that exit (that never ends) just to make them happy but he doesn't know what to put in the exit so he never finished it, weird he put that computer there though.. maybe he recycled it from the little memory some of them had left and put it there? idk

That's actually a pretty good theory, kinda like what happens in Soma. The game just copies the person personality but in a wrong way and the real person is still outside the real world as if nothing happened to them not knowing they trapped a version of themselves inside a digital world.

Well, I see 2 possibilities with Caine. Either he wants to exit as well, tried to do so, and now knows it is impossible, but actually missed something... or he knows that everybody can exit except him, so he hides the exit to not be left alone.

Bro are you kidding ? Being in the Digital Circus would be awesome. No need to eat so no need to get money, no need to get a job, no need to overwork yourself and live a stressful life. You can just participate in fun activities all day. And the food still gives you the sensation of eating, so you can eat as much as you want during the feasts without gaining weight. And for the "lack of purpose" thing, personally I like writing stories so I could probably ask Caine if I could come up with stories and characters for his adventures, and I could see them come to life which would be very cool. And it would be more recognition than I ever got in real life. Sure you can become abstracted if you lose your mind trying to find an exit, but for me, why would you wanna leave ? This reality is a lot better than the real world.

The exit led to the void, and we see at the end that we zoomed out through the void to see the computer that they’re trapped in. So I think that Caine lied again about creating the exit because they wanted there to be one. I think he tried deleting it, but couldn’t completely delete it due to some safeguard that his creators put on him. I feel like Caine plans on releasing them all once he’s done creating his story. As Jax said, “is this another one of your NPC’s or is it another character”? So, since he couldn’t delete the exit, and he didn’t want anyone to be “spoiled” or escape before he was done creating his story, he just broke it apart and started moving it from place to place so that no one could exit. Kaufmo the clown happened to see the exit as it was disappearing, and this caused an obsession that eventually drove him insane, and he abstracted. Just a theory.
