The ashira part is supposed to represent the sounds of children playing more that they're freed. So it really is supposed to be a joyful part. Apparently he played Ramses. I watched him too. He so clearly loves these people like family, but he also refused to even open his mouth during the Hebrew part. I’m certain he could sing it backwards if he wanted to, but I think in deference to his character he wouldn’t join the chorus until they recommenced in English. That shows genuine class. I’m sure he’s wonderfully talented too.

Last year I took a class in Biblical Hebrew and I’ve loved it more than any other language I’ve learned. About a week ago for one of my classes, the professor told us to look at Exodus 15. I had my Hebrew Bible with me, so I opened it and the first verse was, “Ashira l’Adonai ki ga-oh ga-ah.” I was like HEY WAIT A MINUTE and went ahead and sure enough, the other verses in the Prince of Egypt were there. Apparently that Hebrew singing is taken directly from the song in Exodus 15 right after the Israelites crossed the Red Sea. Hope that little story puts a smile on your face. Shalom!
