I had a white Shepard that looked like Princess. His name was Guss (yes, two Ss). He was the greatest dog ever. My dad had gotten him from his neighbor who was going to put him down just because he didn't want him. But Guss had always been Dad's buddy so he took him in. We lived in the country so there was no law about a leash and no one around to catch us if there were. He didn't even have a collar. When I was born, Guss always stayed in my bedroom. My parents weren't married and as you can imagine, there was a lot of fighting. Mom and I didn't stay with Dad long but while we were there, whenever there was fighting, Dad said he always found Guss standing by my crib upstairs as if to protect me and if I started crying at night he would run over before either of my parents could even get out of bed and stick his nose through the bars and nuzzle me and lick me to try calming me down. When I would visit Dad on weekends, he would go outside to work on trucks for his job and never had to question if Guss and I would be okay. I even learned early on how to feed him and get him water if Dad was out. Guss never tried to get more food than he knew was allowed and never begged at the table. Guss had a chair in Dad's office at his house that had always been his. He slept there while I slept on the couch downstairs. I get night terrors now (maybe from the constant fighting that my mom always starts with people) and when I would wake up at night I never make a sound. Somehow, though, Guss always knew. He would come out of the office and over to the couch then, knowing he wasn't allowed on the couch, he would lay next to it and I would crawl down to the floor and put my face in his soft fur until I fell asleep. Dad says when that would happen, he never once saw Guss move until I woke up

What makes this story chilling is I grew up with an Alaskan Malamute. Trixie didn't seem unusual to my parents but once she got older, they decided to send her to obedience school. My dad got a call from the school one day. He thought she had gotten into trouble. It was the opposite: she had beaten EVERY single dog to the top of the class. The toughest rivals were two German Shepherds but the teachers said she clearly was ahead of them in every area and learned faster than any dog they'd seen all year. They gave her a medal, my dad still has it in the attic. Trixie was always very gentle despite her enormous size. My dad said when I was only a year old, her favorite thing to do was walk up and just lean on me. Of course with a dog like that, she sometimes accidentally knocked me down. She meant no harm, she was just saying "Hi little buddy!" We didn't need a cat. She was an expert at tracking and killing mice, rats and other nuisances. One day, she tore down the back door to our yard. My dad of course, heard it and ran outside. She walked up to him and dropped at his feet the BIGGEST rat he had ever seen in his life. He grew up in Central America and had seen big ones there but they were tiny compared to this! Considering how she continuously amazed relatives and friends with her intelligence, I'm glad she never turned out bad like Princess. Hearing this story left me shaking. If she had gone bad, there's no telling what might have happened. I had a high school history teacher who also had a Malamute when he was my age but he was scared of him because the dog was not only very intelligent, but oddly, held a grudge against him. They never ever got along. He had to wait until his parents leashed the dog in the back yard before he could walk home from school. I immediately thought of him when I heard this story. This is one of the scariest pastas I've listened to in months.

This story reminds me of a dog my grandparents had called King. He had behavioral problems and could have been potentially violent towards people and animals. They got him from a shelter and never realized how much the poor dog struggled. He was never violent towards their family or their other pets. He had to be put down shortly before I was born after getting in a dog fight.
