Princess Diana's Last Engagement Before Stepping Back (1993)

On 16 December 1993, Diana, Princess of Wales attended an event with Centrepoint, a charity dedicated to helping young homeless people, in London. Earlier in the month, Princess Diana had announced that she would be stepping back from her public duties and asked the media to give her "time and space", the constant press attention having become "hard to bear". The Centrepoint event was to be her last public engagement for a while, though she said she would continue to support a number of charities. As the crowd and media awaited her arrival, ITN spoke to freelance photographer Dennis James, who insisted that the Princess of Wales needed to change her attitude to the press and argued that her reduced public appearances would only increase the value of 'off-guard' shots of Diana.
