My mum always disliked Princess Margaret, she said that the reason she gave up the “love of her life” wasn’t for duty but because she didn’t want to lose the trappings of Royalty and being kowtowed to as the Queens sister.

Princess Anne is the best! Totally loyal to her mother and brother. A brilliant sportswoman…to Olympic level. I can’t help remembering when I was young that she wasn’t the favourite. The press seemed to think she was a bit too outspoken and bolshy…just the things we love about her nowadays. Love Princess Anne…she hasn’t changed and that’s what I like about her. That and her unswavering loyalty.

Yes she does. There’s a pattern emerging. You’d think being the spare, having all the privilege but none of the pressure would be a good thing…not if the last three generations are taken into consideration (Margaret, Andrew and Harry). On the other hand, King George VI was a better option than his elder brother. Maybe because he didn’t such a soft experience. He was sent off to the navy and served during the Battle of Jutland when he was a young midshipman.

Princess Margaret was very aware of her station. She was the sister of Queen, and daughter of a King and last Emperor of India. I've read that she may have chosen to not marry Peter Townsend because she would have had to relinquish all her royal titles and privileges to do so. I doubt she would have liked to be plain Mrs Townsend.

@@ynys_mon6928 Harry really seems the odd one out in this trio. Margaret was a very intelligent woman and my thoughts on her early life is that neither she nor her sister had a “ normal school experience “. The Late Queen had tutors etc because what she needed to know you couldn’t learn at school or university. Margaret, left to her own devices was just expected to make a good marriage and be around to support her sister. Andrew was focused on his career, like Anne was successful. Harry just seemed like a loose cannon and with all the privileges and support he was given, he never made use of his education- if he wasn’t Royal, I really don’t know what career path he would have taken. If it was the military, he would have started at the very bottom.

Picture this with Diana. Falls in love when a teenager with one of the staff, a married man who is over ten years older than her. Can't marry him because he has no money to keep her lavish lifestyle and servants to do what she demands. Gets divorced and next lover is a young gardener in his twenties and she is in her forties. He dumps her and she becomes a bitter women who sees a naive, unworldly 20 year old girl fall madly in love with a man in his 30s. She realises soon after that he is in love with another older woman and he only married her because he wanted children to keep the lineage going. The bitter woman died a lonely death with no public funeral and very few mourners. The naive girl tragically died in her 30s and the whole world mourned for her.

My cousin, a junior diplomat, was at a dinner in honour of Princess Margaret on an official visit to Cyprus. After dinner, when they'd repaired to the drawing room the Princess didn't sit down, so the elderly ex-pat guests had to stand. It was a lack of purpose. Or at least they were made to "wait" in leisure until "a certain time" wch hardly ever came. Meanwhile P.Anne found purpose in just doing the work regardless of titles, and bore the brunt of a lesser status royal... mostly spares get resentful when they receive the less than royal status. I am certain the Waleses are doing something about such upbringing, and why they have 3, despite Catherine having such a hard time with all her pregnancies.

I'm loving this book and don't want it to end either Shauna. I completely agree with you about Princess Margaret. She was a spoiled, entitled brat and it started with her father's spoiling. In spite of her support of Lady Glenconnor (who gave the luckless princess way more support than she received I might add), Margaret would have made a better celebrity than she did a princess. When she was eventually told she could marry Group Captain Townshend but she would lose her titles and her 'royal purse' she very quickly fell out of love with him. I think he had a lucky escape actually!

Margaret was a handful yet her two children are the classiest of the 6 of that generation.. They are unspoilt , delightful adults with impeccable manners . And never tried to exploit the Monarchy. How sad for the staff to be subjected to such horrible treatment by Princess Margaret. Had I been in charge of the staff, I would have assigned one or two to attend to Princess Margaret and allow them to sleep in the next day, rotating the staff so that they would all take a turn on the "late shift". The royal family seems to treat staff rather badly and then assume that they should just suck it up and be thankful for the privilege of working for them. I was not surprised to hear that Princess Anne had no live-in staff at Gatcombe Park, and her children (especially Zara) have grown into fine, responsible adults. Prince William and Princess Catherine seem to be carrying on that tradition by not employing live-in staff at their Adelaide Cottage residence. Their three children have been raised with beautiful manners, and I look forward to seeing all three grow into responsible and caring adults

When stories like this come out, you can understand why Harry wanted to leave. His big mistake was marrying his egotistical, narcissistic wife, who could not go quietly. They would have succeeded in America as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, if they stuck to doing charity and not publicly attacking the family. The RF have a lot of faults and used Princess Diana for their own means. But Diana was not perfect. She pushed back using the press as her weapon. And in the end, it resulted in a terrible accident that took her life. And, in the long run, Harry was always going to fail as he was never taught how to support himself in the real world. I used to feel sad for him. I don’t anymore. He is too arrogant and too stubborn to change. Much like his Uncle Andrew.
@dominaevillae28
@dominaevillae28 Ай бұрын
@user-nn3pe3ky4l Diana feigned interest in Charles’ interests and hobbies (Balmoral, fishing hunting, etc.)-basically, she pretended to be who Camilla is, a hunting, shooting, fishing, reading country girl. Then as soon as they were on their honeymoon (most of which was at Balmoral), Diana declared each of his interests as borrrring. When the honeymoon moved on to Balmoral she would have have fits of screaming and crying when he wouldn’t do what she wanted when she wanted him to do it (the court was at Balmoral for the summer so there was official business going on and many witnesses). After the honeymoon she proceeded to, one by one, separate him from his friends (he would give in to avoid conflict with her), then his staff (who would quit because she would not look at or speak to those she wanted to leave). In her mind, she loved him, but then attempted to change everything about him, and if he wanted any kind of peace, he would comply. Diana and her family, particularly the Spencers, were very ambitious and misrepresented who she was to the RF, particularly regarding her emotional health & stability. The Spencer’s actually had a bit of a reputation for unstable men (Diana’s mom cited abuse in the divorce), but the RF didn’t think the mental issues affected the Spencer women. Diana actually refused to cooperate with mental health professionals provided by the RF when they realized how unstable she was, and wouldn’t accept mental health help for years (yes, the RF tried to get her professional help) until a friend threatened to out her bulimia to the press because she was afraid it would kill her. And that is just how she treated Charles. As a grown woman she held hostility towards her mother for leaving her abusive father (her mother took Diana & her brother with her but lost custody); Diana was 28 years old when she pushed her 60 year old step-mother down the stairs(long after Diana married btw), threw her stepmother’s things out the window in trash bags after her father died, fired one staff for claiming expenses with the palace for some trips with Diana (completely legitimate expenses), and fired another who was the currier delivering tapes to Andrew Morten for her for accepting reimbursement from the publishing company. The virginal “Shy Di” persona was completely a creation of a press. A bit like the common impression that the Queen Mother “sweet ol’granny.”

Princess Margaret was although beautiful & had plenty to be grateful about ,act like spoiled brat & abuse kindness of sister & everyone ,specially herself. SHE never was grateful what she had . As had to give up love of her life!! it was condition of marry the man or chose the privilege come as a princess. SHE chose money. Like Japanese Princess choose love & have ordinary life.

I agree with you about Princess Margaret's vices and imperiousness. But she was quite fabulous and I don't think she courted the media. She was a **tch to those she deemed inferior and made life difficult for the Queen. But over her reign the Queen had to deal with many family members who were difficult at times - Prince Phillip, 3 of her children that divorced, Diana, her mother, Edward and Wallis. H was just the latest in a long line of family that brought her trials. Love the book Shauna ❤

The ‘spare’ is always allowed to get away with too much and I wonder if it’s because not much is expected of them. If the royals upped the standards to expect more from all the royal children, maybe the second in line wouldn’t be such brats! I have high hopes for William and Catherine’s children 💕

I think Margaret came from a different era when royalty was more revered and served by "servants" and not with the modern consideration of people who work for the family as staff. It's easy to criticize with modern views. But it was just the way she was brought up. With great privilege comes great responsibility. The Harrys and Margarets tend to enjoy the privileges and reject the responsibilities.
