The single biggest factor to determine spring vs fall seeding is large trees. If you have large shade trees in your lawn, it's practically impossible to get seed to germinate under those trees in the fall. There's not nearly enough light to get the plant established before it gets too cold and/or the leaves fall and start smothering the seedlings and almost all means for removing the leaves (blowers, rakes, mowing) are detrimental to the immature grass. If you seed in the spring, the grass has an opportunity to germinate before the tree canopy blocks all the light and the grass has a much better chance of getting established. Yes, you have to be vigilant to make sure the seed gets watered in the summer, and you may need to seed a few times if spring storms wash away some of your seed, but I can assure you that planting grass seed in the fall on a shady lawn is a fools errand even under the best circumstances.
@PrincessCutLawnCare3 жыл бұрын
Oh yes totally agree with you, spring seeding is the way to go for heavily shaded areas!
@jimshorts59703 жыл бұрын
Always seeded the heaviest in the fall with a mostly fescue lawn in OK to get the most bang for the buck. Spring seeding is difficult because it normally doesn’t have time to get mature enough to withstand the intense heat and you lose a lot of it. Don’t have that issue with the milder fall temps. And the only reason to seed fescue /KB/rye in the first place is BECAUSE of trees/shade. Bermuda is the main grass you find in OK but doesn’t grow well in the shade. I seeded as soon as possible in Sept. when the forecast showed cooler temps coming so it would be fully germinated before the leaves fell in Nov/Dec. At that point I used a blower to get them in piles and bagged them up with very little light raking involved. At that point I’d throw down Howard Johnson’s fall fertilizer w/Barricade to prevent winter weeds from being a problem in the spring. Applied their spring fert. w/Barricade in March to prevent crabgrass and any other weeds in summer. Never put any type of weed killer on it because there was no need. Arguably had the nicest looking lawn in town for 20 yrs. It did help being on a corner lot and mowing it multidirectionally to give it that baseball field look.
@roberttreasure19862 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! I have a massive oak tree which blocks sun and rain. I have even watered the grass when it was raining outside (which makes everyone who is ignorant to the canopies of large shade trees think you are a certified nut!). In the fall, I am competing with acorns and shade, and dry weather here in Missouri (the fall is the driest season where I live). Also we sometimes have Indian summers which last with 90 degree highs until the 2nd week of October and then a frost the 2nd week of November. Leaves don't fall off until Thanksgiving. So where I live, fall is very sketchy for planting seed.
@WhiteManKangJump2 жыл бұрын
@@roberttreasure1986 try a shade mix.
@roberttreasure19862 жыл бұрын
@@WhiteManKangJump Thanks, I have to be very careful about shade mixes, as I used to buy them without delving into them. A lot of time they seem to include fine fescue. If you have fine fescue, you want the entire yard that, as it doesn't mix well with other grass seed, it wilts over, and you have to cut shorter. A lot of yards use the blue grass mix, and they are the last cool season grasses to green up in the spring and they need more water. For some reason, the blue grass lawns in my neighborhood look like hell this year, after a hot dry summer and fall and dry winter last year. I put one of my "accidentally bought" shade mixes down on the edges of my lawn instead of putting it to waste this year. It was mostly a mix of annual and perennial rye and bluegrass. Rye doesn't tend to do well in the heat either, but it sure is pretty. Tall fescue is my choice.

Always used Milorganite when I seeded in the fall due to it being low nitrogen, greens grade (small granules), and it’s organic. Mowed the fescue really low when the intense heat of OK subsided in mid/late Sept. then hand sowed the seed heavily (50 lbs on an average sized lot). Then got 10 or 12 bags of topsoil and threw it over the seed by hand. Spread the Milorganite on top and watered 3 times a day with a sprinkler system. Smelled like the shit it is for a week or so but would germ. faster and would give it that deep green color. Tried seeding in the spring some initially but found that you usually couldn’t get it mature enough before the heat got most of it. Also highly recommend Howard Johnson’s spring and fall fertilizers w/Barricade. After a few seasons of that stuff you won’t have any weeds to deal with. Just have to wait until the grass has all fully germinated before spreading, usually in late Oct/early Nov before the leaves start to fall. Had 3 huge oak trees that shaded nearly the entire front yard so pretty much had to seed KB/fescue/rye to have a thick lawn, as Bermuda grass (the most common in OK) doesn’t do well in the shade. Nicest lawn in town for 20 yrs:)

I overseeded early April at the same time I leveled my lawn. I had a ton of bare spots that I’m guessing were from ant damage, I’m 100% perennial rye so it was probably going to look bad until fall. Peat moss was sold out at both HD’s and Lowe’s in my area, and I am cheap so didn’t want to dish out any more money. I basically used the ol spray and pray method and used probably 3x the seed I would normally use because I had a bunch lying around from previous years. Of course we got 80 degree days for about a week straight 2 days after seeding. I hit it with water 4x a day and am currently looking at the thickest lawn I’ve ever had. Sometimes you get lucky, we’ll see if she survives the summer! Edited because of fat fingers 😂

It's March 23 here in Philadelphia PA area and I've just prepped and seeded a 2.5' x 40' length of dirt as a result of a (gas pipe) trench dug last mid October. Followed your most helpful instructions, but finished off with a very light covering of last years pine needles and replaced the very open burlap to hold it all in place for a few weeks - parts are about a 45 degree slope. Luckily this is on the north side of the house, so pretty shady in the dead of summer. Hope I did everything right. Best wishes for you and your business.

I've had better luck with early spring seeding, get it down early well before the first mow and it will have plenty of time to establish itself. Fall might be better for those who have time to water or have irrigation but the fall is just to dry for me, spring rains make much easier work for growing grass at least for me.

These are great tips, although fall is always best for seed. I put down the Seed Super Store "Sunny Mix" down last fall using a similar method after having grubs tear up my front lawn last summer. I put down some Scott's lawn soil first as it has the starter fert in it already and my soil is mostly clay (being in Chicagoland too) but yes soil, seed, rake, peat, water, water, water about 10-15 mins 3 times a day did the trick by the time late fall came around my grass was the best looking on the block.

I would actually recommend to NOT water it too much while the temps are still cool in the Spring. because you mentioned that you wanted this new grass to grow deep roots, watering it a lot in the Spring will not allow the roots to grow deep. roots grow deeper when they are searching for water, ie, if they don't need to search, they won't grow as deep. but yes, in the summer, you will have to water it often. it's tough enough for established grass to deal with the summer heat, but very difficult for less mature grass to survive the summer.

Great tips! Spring weather is so janky in the northeast it creates a very small window to seed / overseed. 50 degrees one day, 70 the next, back down into the mid 40s. Thanks George. I've been checking out your vids and now have a better idea how to boost my lawn appearance to keep up with a particular neighbor LOL. ( his is such a lovely dark green color and despite mine being healthy it just doesn't look quite as good so I'm going to try a fertilizer with less phosphate and having a bit of iron to see how that works).

I just planted Saturday and I hope it comes up i cant get peat moss in the small town I live in or haven't seen it anywhere but I covered it with dirt after raking it in an used meso 4sc so hope it comes in before heat comes it's still cold here in Nebraska!!!! Great video brother thank you!!!
@PrincessCutLawnCare3 жыл бұрын
Nice! Still cold here too but that’s alright because as soon as it hits that growing temp your grass will germinate, giving it a head start before summer gets here. Good luck vin!

Peat moss is the fossil fuel of the horticulture industry. It is is harvested from ancient bogs; most peat used in the U.S. comes from Canada. Peat takes many centuries to develop, and it’s being removed much faster than it ever can be replaced. As a beginner I can understand using it. There are many new things you’re trying out and it’s best to use what works best. However, as your skills develop I would encourage people to look into using compost as an alternative. Google this: Gardening Know How: Peat Moss Alternatives: What To Use Instead

I moved into a tiny studio apartment on the side of a barn at my retirement. The small little back yard attached is nothing but very lush and healthy population of sticker weeds. If I put out a pre emergent this coming fall ( everything it will actually turn yellow during the very hot summer in the Texas panhandle ). And then a post emergence during the winter. As well as removing as much of the plant material as I can, do you think I can plant a lawn next spring? Or should I wait through until next fall to put in the lawn. Can get very hot here. Lots of wind and exposure. Today in the 90s about 5 pm. But we can have night time freezes all the way until about Mother’s Day, even with the hot days. Desert area. I thought about just putting down rock, but a friend did that, and the rock just seemed to intensify the heat in the back yard. Perhaps I should cough up the money for turf in the spring.

Good video. I live in Arizona, tell me about heat. Burmuda grows best but luckily in my side yard it is shaded most of the day and I am able to keep Fescue and Rye year round. I bought a Scotts Lawn Care book years ago and you follow what it says almost exactly.

@travisandrist2892 жыл бұрын
really it depends on where you live. I live in central Arizona and I seed in the spring and have wonderful success. Seeding in the fall does nothing. I have found that when the temperatures reach 80* + the results are great and the grass gets well established by the time the 100* heat arrives.
