I remember being on tag. Wasn't for very long at all but I've never been more conscious of time management. Remember my friend driving me home and we got stuck in non moving traffic because of an accident. I got out and walked almost an hour to get home because I did not want to breach it. Had another scare when I got a call at some ridiculous time of the morning. They said that something was wrong and it said I wasn't at home even though I was. Knew I hadn't done anything wrong but I was expecting the police to knock on the door at any minute. My freedom was in the hands of some faceless people on the other end of a phone

I can't believe the jails there they've got all these fluffy sheets and comforters, they have an electric tea kettle, they have window shadings and actual windows. That's not like prisons in the United States at all you can't have anything I think I even saw a flat screen TV in that cell. Our TVs are huge and see through. They would never let them have an electric tea kettle.

It's a golden opportunity to reform criminals. In the end they clean up. You can punish or you can reform. Whatever sick satisfaction you derive from their harsh punishment is quashed the next time they rob you or run you over. Here in the states there is no chance to reform and it's a revolving door. In Arizona where I live we have the toughest jail in America. Tent city in 120 degree heat and yellow water to drink. Ppl die in there on the regular. If they don't die their back in a matter of days weeks or months. No coffee no salt no nothing. Being on the chain gang is a privilege here. It isn't working. The trauma they go through in the jail only serves to make addictions of all kinds worse. A hand up instead of a smack down goes a long way. If my nephews drug dealer had been reformed instead of punished perhaps he would be alive today.

@@tanyamushaney2743 the US system is absolutely horrible and animalistic. There's so many comments on videos about UK prisons saying "looks like paradise" or "neighborhoods here are worse". Is that a good thing to some people? This sort of prison is actually trying to help you, unlike America which is about beating you to a pulp because you made a mistake. The fact that one of the first defenses in the US is a tazer is fucking stupid, and it shows how animalistic the system is. You guys have paintball guns filled with pepper spray for what reason? Why is it necessary to have "the pit"? Why does anyone think that is okay to do the fellow human beings. These aren't grizzly bears, they're mom and dads.
@tanyamushaney2743
@tanyamushaney2743 Жыл бұрын
@@bigmanmccheez5342 You can't rehabilitate and punish at the same time. That's not how the human psyche works. The thirst for revenge may be quenched but these people will be released back into our society, they'll be in line behind you at the ATM so it might behoove society to look into correction rather than "punishment". If they're never going to be released punish them all you want but if not I would concentrate on something besides revenge. American prisons are not all their cracked up to be. We have prisons that are over 100 years old with no heating or cooling in harsh environments. We feed many of them food that would make a goat puke. Guards look the other way while inmates are beaten and raped.. They come out so traumatized they'll never be even close to right much less rehabilitated. Then you and I deal with them. Might be your neighbor or renter or the son of an acquaintance. Maybe they have a taste for male on male rape now. Perhaps they choose to regain their dignity by visiting that violence on an innocent unsuspecting person. Then we get revenge again and they're released again. Round and round we've went for hundreds of years. It doesn't work.

I was sent to prison in the late 70,s in London for driving while under the influence of drugs i was desperately ill from drug addiction the prison was Victorian in condition and in the way it was run. There was zero medical treatment even though I was in the medical wing. I developed pneumonia in a freezing cell and almost died even then I had no treatment. I realize I should not have been driving but my life could have been turned around then it was not and things got worse much worse. I was introduced to heroin for the first time during my period of punishment .

These shows illustrates why we need much better and far more accessible state funded drug treatment centres to try and get people off drugs who want to come off BEFORE they end up committing crimes and ultimately in the prison system. Yes, it costs money but not as much as it costs to keep these people locked up and all the knock on effects from that. It would be in everyone's best interest and would save money in the long term. It's just not a vote winner to say you'd like to help addicts and that's why there's no political will to do it. Unfortunately the "lock them up and throw away the key" rhetoric is far more popular because people think it will never be them or anyone they care about. Pretty sad really.
@sarahstrong7174
@sarahstrong7174 Жыл бұрын
Too often people are using drugs to help them cope with mental health issues such as being overwhelmed by bereavement. It would help if support was available for people going through these issues. With things like bereavement, job loss, close friend or partner being terribly ill or injured. It would save money & people would be happier & heathier if there was a support group & a few counselling sessions available. These things are normal & people need support with them. Trying to save money on things that people genuinely need almost always results in extra costs in the long-run. Another example & please take this to your M.P. Is that a great deal of money could be saved in the long-term if benefits aimed at providing housing to people in need, were channelled into buying homes for housing associations for use in providing social housing in perpetuity, instead of paying private landlords for temporary use of buildings. This also might help reduce the prison population as boys who have been moved around a lot & who thus have literacy problems later are six times more likely to go to prison.

Your bang on mate I'm on methadone at the moment it's stabilized me I've been off the drugs now couple of years don't think about it anymore without the methadone I would be still living a nightmare
@gearoftones8585
@gearoftones8585 Жыл бұрын
@@tech9auto223 the problem mate is that unless you've lived it or have experience of what it's like for addicts, it's too easy to assume it will never affect your life and it's too tempting to write them all off as wasters in society who made stupid choices, don't want to work and are no use to anyone. The reality is very different. Addicts, firstly, come from all walks of life. Most will come from poverty but not all. The fact so many famous rich People have had serious addictions illustrates that fact, the only difference is they have the cash to pay for proper treatment to get out of it although some don't manage it and have died as a result. 99 out of 100 usually have some sort of either childhood trauma, childhood abuse, a childhood in care or some sort of mental illness. These people almost always have a story to tell, a harrowing one that most of us haven't experienced. You'll always get the lazy people who will say "well I know somebody who had a bad childhood and they didn't resort to drugs" well, that's good for them but we don't all deal with trauma the same way. Everyone is different. Once that addiction takes hold, these people's lives aren't good in any way. They aren't having a party. They aren't enjoying themselves. They're simply sustaining an addiction and often doing terrible things and sinking to lows they never thought they would, to sustain it. It's a horrible existence. Most of them would love to be helped, most of them want to be free of it. Criminalising them doesn't do any of that. I've never been a heroin addict myself but in some ways I am an addict. I was prescribed Tramadol 14 years ago after a serious accident that almost killed me. I've been taking tramadol ever since for back issues. My body has become dependent on it. If I don't have Tramadol, I start to get ill. It feels like a cold at first, I get lethargic, achey, then my skin starts to crawl, my head feels heavy and all I want is a dose of tramadol to take it away. It's horrific, truly horrible. That's just Tramadol. Heroin is much stronger and I suspect the withdrawals are much more acute. I don't see myself as any different. My body has a dependence and so does theirs. It's no use telling people to just stop when every fibre of their body is telling them they need it and the withdrawals are utterly horrific. It takes both physical and mental help to conquer that. I am lucky, I get my Tramadol on prescription but if it was just taken away abruptly? I could be capable of anything to try and get it so I can feel well again and not face those withdrawals. Forget blaming people for trying it in the first place, stop blaming them for their addiction and stop criminalising them because one day it could be you and you'll realise that all you need is the proper help to get over it and if you can help an addict over their addiction, they'll no longer be a cost to the legal system, they'll no longer steal or commit crime to feed their addiction and they will become productive members of society but you need to give them that opportunity. It's in the best interests of EVERYONE to fund proper treatment centres and change their lives as opposed to making them worse and probably spend even more money dragging them through the legal system and throwing them in prison.

What a shame & what a waste that people are not able to access the help they need with bereavement etc & end up relying on drugs & then getting addicted & having to go to prison in order to have a chance of getting clean. There should be somewhere for people to go for help. Also some people repeatedly land in prison. They cannot cope outside on their own. It would save a lot of money & probably save lives if there was somewhere they could go & live & work as part of a community with structure & routine & social activities & company.

Why is it that this woman in prison can barely speak her indigenous language? She can barely speak at all for that matter! Why is it that most of England, Scotland, Ireland and Australia speak English so poorly? Very poor pronunciation, enunciation and horrid local dialects. While, of course, the US has many poor speakers but mostly in the South and Midwest below a certain income and education level. However, no country’s general population speaks English as was originally intended as does the US.

I know not possible with the 'soft' prisoners they chose to film in this case as most didn't have an actual victim, but they could have shown someone who lost someone to a drink driver, or lost a limb etc, and also another victim who got assaulted by someone carrying an offensive weapon. Would be a much better documentary then.

Every single one of them said it was their own fault and they deserved it. None of them blamed anyone else. There's an old song. It's called "Walk a Mile in my Shoes.". The line to take notice of is: "Walk a mile in my shoes, walk a mile in my shoes. Before you accuse criticise and abuse, walk a mile in my shoes". I'm Australian but my great Grandmother was a Scot. One of her favourite sayings about judging other people was: There but for the grace of God go I". I'm not religious but the religious take on it is : "Judge not, lest he be judged". If anyone hurt any of mine and I could get to that person, I too could well end up in prison.

Remember not everyone has the same ubringing as you. Yes we can all think why did you keep having children or taking drugs, but many people didnt have the guidance in life or they lived in poverty and its a cycle. You need to look outside of your situation.
