In the wake of Vera's departure they really made Powell's character a bit over the top. Vera never had to resort to physical violence to be effectively oppressive. Aside from the ever present inappropriate grin, the Powell character isn't really distinguished enough in terms of personality to play a central role as a replacement for Vera.

Vera was quite hard but had style, she had her hair nicely in a bun and presented well. Mrs Powell relies on hairclips to fix her hair constantly and has no style. She'll never be another Vera no matter how much she copies her.

Po-face had a habit of going from kind to viciously cruel pretty rapidly, long before Vera left, when she was union rep. She was particularly brutal to the teacher David Andrews, happily destroying his employment at the jail.

Powell is only flirting with Fletch because it was he who caught her beating on the new prisoner Hennesy. Powell is attempting to manipulate the situation by softening Fletch up through flattery, so as to escape the consequences of her actions. This is quite a drastic shift in character for Powell of late--in just a few episodes she is transformed from a strictly by the book union representative to the bride of Frankenstein.

Colleen is proving just how much she cannot handle being promoted. First she overreacts with Alison and now she has a go at Andrea like that when all she needed to do was take her to the governor. Vera had her faults but she would have remained in control of the situation and got it sorted out in a more appropriate way than that. Colleen can butter up Jim all she wants to keep him on side, but I'd still report her if I were him. If only these first timers of reasonable intellectual ability could only see when they first arrive how important it is to get on the right side of Bea. They just make it more difficult for themselves than need be by going against her.

Andrea makes me think of Rick from the Young Ones. A 80s version of a politically inclined hipster student/wannabe anarchist. She spouts crap about justice, freedom and equality yet looks down her nose at those she considers inferior, a typical champagne socialist. For all her talk about changing the world, she'll be working in the city in a few years just like the rest of the 80s yuppies. I've met plenty of her sort before.

I think Colleen's very good at the nasty stuff, much more sinister than Vera and much less obvious than the Freak. And she chooses her targets well: who wouldn't want to bash Page and Hennessey? The way she went from nice to nasty, with that subsequent gradual mellowing out that was so gradual you barely noticed it, was an interesting character arc that Vera and the Freak never underwent. I always thought she was the best officer of the lot, in all phases.

2nd appearance by an actress, who also appeared as Tony Reids pregent girlfriend for another guy. I feel it is very obivious Coleen was a stright away replacement at this stage for Vera. I don't like it as it was too soon after Vera's departure. However non the less, she is very good at playing the b**ch screw also. I love her stern face, but also I think she has an edge of Vera, where she is more tactifull using her feminity with confidances, flirting & charm like that. Something Vera lacked

@ Ozlass 777: In the expression 'working class', the operative word is 'working' because the other so called classes have never done an honest day's work in their bloody lives.

Most middle-class people spend their lives working. What are you talking about?

I'll be skipping a lot in the next number of episodes. Andrea one of the worst characters ever. Hated her.

Andrea is like every other person of her ilk - a hypocrite. What right have they to protest when they know nothing of the ordinary person's struggle to survive?

these writers need to pay attention to what they write.....lizzie keeps saying she's been in jail half her life....which would put her age at ....44 or so....hmmmmm

Tammy lynn, I think by Doreen saying she's been in jail half her life she's referring to institutions and homes while she was growing up when she was younger along with her multiple prison sentences.

There's never been any mention of Lizzie spending time in homes or institutions when she was a kid or prior to going to prison for poisoning the sheerers. Lizzie has always talked about a life full of travelling and doing different jobs etc before she went to gaol. And her kids were taken from her and put in welfare. But not Lizzie herself. I think that you're getting Lizzie and Doreen mixed up, Heather.

But I do agree with the stupidity of Lizzie always claiming that she spent half of her life in gaol. Lizzie is supposed to be 72. And she only got locked up for 20 yrs for the poisoning incident. Even if you add about another year or so since she was released/pardoned for that. But that's hardly half of her life. She hasn't spent 35+ yrs inside hehe. They could have still said Lizzie had spent almost 1/3 of her life inside, and it would still make an impact considering she wasn't a young woman at that time.

It's just a figure of speech. No need to be so literal about it.
