Uh oh...this clean 2010 Toyota Prius with 230k miles has a weird ABS system FAILURE.
No codes set, but the booster assist pump keeps cycling every 15-30 seconds.
Sounds like there is an internal LEAK inside the fancy "ABS Brake Booster Stroke Simulator Module" assembly.
To repair this issue costs an arm and a leg...
Oh, and you NEED an OEM-level scanner to perform the ultra-complicated brake bleeding procedure.
Do Hybrids really save you money in the long run??

Hey Ivan. We work on tons of Lexus and Toyota vehicles at our shop. Quite a few of these that aren't hybrids use the same type of brake system. We have had to replace them on the non-hybrids as well, they are just easier to get to. PITA for sure but actually profitable once you've done a couple. Most shops in our area won't touch them.

@@paulsz6194 The maintenance of the car is where the real savings come in. Failures like this are rare, while ugly things like Nissan CVT explosions are just a matter of time and miles. In the past 19 years I have had a 2002 Prius, a 2010 Prius, and a 2014 Prius, all bought used. In all those years my total maintenance time (besides the usual PM stuff) has been negligible. In contrast, all our other cars required repairs several times a year. In a total of about 300K miles among those cars I never once had to do anything to the brakes. The 2002 needed a hybrid battery rebuild at 208K miles and 18 years; $2000 and some basic wrenching set it up for the rest of its life. The 2010 apparently became magnetized, being hit by a sideswiper, a deer running full tilt into the driver's door, and a young woman who thought her doctor was being too uptight about her driving without her seizures under control... all within six months. The 2014 has been wonderful to us. I will never buy a conventional car, with all its troubles, again. 30 years of misery was enough for me.

If the customer runs a Carfax on the vehicle it would tell him if the part was replaced with an updated unit under a recall. What difference would it make on an 11 year old Prius with (230K), nearly a quarter million miles? This special breed of customer that purchases these wouldn't settle or trust anything used so the Car Fax gimmick is basically useless and the owners best bet is to continue driving it until the inverter and or battery fails, which may happen sooner than later.
@OzFrog48Z
@OzFrog48Z 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrYAMAHA32177 Ivan was concerned that the vin for the donor vehicle of the replacement unit fell into the recall, so the part might have the same problem as the original. The recall was for a bad accumulator, which is the problem the customer was having. I hate Carfax too, but if he ran the vin of the donor vehicle through a Carfax it would at least tell him if the recall was done. A Toyota dealer could tell him the same thing for free. Then he would know if he had the updated part. Trying to stop a Prius with a bad hydraulic unit is almost impossible so you have to either fix it or get rid of the car. I'm not a big Prius fan, but I do work on them. I have to admit they last a long time. On a car this old I would take a chance on a used part versus the cost of a new one.

This seems similar in concept to Mercedes Sensotronic Brakes that my 04 E55 has. They ran it from 03-06 in all E-classes and I think earlier in the S-class. Many issues over the years but after all the dust settled, there is currently a 25 year, unlimited mileage warranty on the system for ALL cars. That didn't come without a fight I'm sure but that's pretty impressive. Also, the SBC pump is integrated into the ABS block and it is super easy to access. Right on top on the passenger side front-ish of the engine bay.

Those vehicles have electronic brakes because they are tall and rollover-prone. They have a system called vehicle-dynamics integrated management (or VDIM for short) to detect a skid or possible rollover before it becomes an issue and make millisecond-by-millisecond brake, throttle, and steering assist adjustments to stay in control. A traditional braking system just couldn't respond rapidly enough, and the pedal would feel inconsistent.

If I was sure I would be getting a lot of them it would totally be worth getting the right equipment and spending time to learn the system, but there is just so much easier work around here to do it’s not needed. Also, I have found the wiper and cover under it not a big deal. To do the struts that has to come out, and if you just go right at it without trying to find a way not to do it it’s out in maybe 10 min or less. Nothing to complain about really.

Before the Citroen Xantia (around 1990) all Citroen cars with hidro pneumatic suspension had rock solid brake pedals. Brake pedal had no travel, braking action was controlled by how hard you pressed the pedal, not how much it moved. Toyota had a similar problem in the Prius, as the brake pedal travel is not directly connected to how much the brakes are applied, due to regenerative braking stands in the way. Toyota's solution is the contraption you are replacing in this video... Citroen's solution was to add a spring between the pedal and the brake controller... Springs convert travel into pressure. Just what was needed.

Well, earlier this year it was diagnosed that it needed a new INVERTER. Cost, is $5 000 CAD. It may even be 10 000 but either way it is almost the cost or half the cost of the whole car. Love your videos and appreciate the work you put into them. In this case I disagree that this has anything to do with the vehicle being a hybrid, as others have stated, there are multiple vehicles in the Toyota lineup that used this same system and are not hybrids. Additionally that vehicle has saved the owner(s) north of $10k in fuel over the life, so if it needed something like a $2k battery pack, then the argument about hybrid repair costs would make sense, but also a fair comparison to savings should be made.
@nick21614
@nick21614 2 жыл бұрын
Not even close to 10k in savings. A prius at 50 mpg at 230,000 over a similar not hybrid at 34 mpg is saving 2164 gallons of gas. So that is about $4,500 depending on where you live. When you factor in the higher cost to register a hybrid and the inflated initial purchase cost, you aren't saving any money at all. For example a base Prius in 2009 cost 22k when a base Corolla cost 15k. A $7,000 premium.

Same over priced components $1500USD for a new booster assembly, and the same tedious bleeding procedure. What was wrong with the good ole' vacuum brake booster? On a hybrid I can see the point, due to the lack of engine vacuum, but on a combustion engine??? Found out that this system was also installed on various late 90's/early 2000 model Toyotas and Lexus that will interchange with the Mitsubishi. Near impossible to find used units in salvage yards, at least here in California. Hoping to not have to replace this unit anytime soon.

Replacement card one motor tested bad upon removal. Somehow when they fry, the module fries but doesn't blow the atc fuse. Long story short, replaced the encoder motor with a bone yard oe one, disconnected the module, shifted transfer case into 2wd using jumpers at the connectors then grounded the front axis actuator so its got four wheel drive when the 4wd fuse in the dash is installed and 2wd when it is removed. F that module. Gonna install a custom switch plate instead.

It’s not just hybrids. My sons 2013 2.0L Ecoboost Fusion had an issue where only one caliper was working and would manually bleed. They would all bleed if you used ForScan to run the ABS module bleed procedure but otherwise, nope. Took it to the dealer, bad ABS module (hydraulic unit) and since it was revised, the old ABS control unit wouldn’t recognize it. Long story short, new parts were $1,500 for both + labor $680. I could’ve gotten used parts or reman parts but they were all old versions so it would’ve eventually had the same issue. Older gen fusions 2012 and below had a recall on these parts but 2013 was a different gen so, out of pocket for us.
