Thank you for your video. I’ve been having this problem for a year. I’ve been having to check my coolant every week to prevent overheating and recently I forgot to do it and my car overheated today in the rain. Fortunately I found your video and felt confident to drive home because the coolant was not leaking after refilling 3 times on the way home. I immediately follow your instructions and disconnect the coolant to the catalytic converter. For those that is wondering, you have to take apart the windshield wiper, the mechanic driver for the wiper, and the large panel above the engine in order to access the coolant hose connectors. Took me about 1 hour. Then it took me 1.5 hours to let the engine run and drive around the freeway to burn up the residual coolant at the heat exchange. There were lots of white smoke coming out. For fortunately it’s gone now. My heat works fine. So far so good now. Your video saved me lots of headaches and money. Can’t thank you enough for sharing this. 🙏🙏🙏

My car has been running well without any issues since I disconnected the coolant to the exhaust. It is worth the 2-3 hours of work and never have to deal with overheating and white smoke aiming out of tail pipe. What they did was stupid, there are too many vibrations at the exhaust and can easily cause coolant leaks.

By the way, as mentioned in the video, disconnecting the coolant from exhaust has no adverse effect to the engine. Only draw back is that your engine will take a few minutes longer to heat up. Waiting a few minutes to for the heater to work is way better than having to deal with coolant leaks and expensive repairs. For some reason, I think my mileage has improved since I disconnected the coolant from the exhaust pipe.

Wait wait wait so just doing that simple bypass, I won’t have that issue anymore?!? These guys from the body body shop located at the dealer are over here telling me that supposedly it might have been the water pump, but then after paying $900!!! It’s still doing the same thing! If that’s all I need to do to fix this, you are gonna be my new idol my friend!! 😮

To add a bit of context here. This, in my experience, doing this bypass is what I found for directions to get to the hoses. This is my model so your milage may vary. First I had to remove the wipers, which was a small cap at he base and a 10mm nut. No puller was needed Second I removed brake fluid cover, Then the two pieces of cowl on each side. They are held on with 2 clips each on each side had to use a flat head to pop them off. For the main cowl its two push through clips on the front one on each side. Then peel off from the windows. I had to used a flat head near the glass and hand under the cowl to pop the cowl from the rubber gasket at the lower part of the windshield Third remove the wiper motor. Its two 10mm bolts on each side then unplug and remove Forth the lower cowl. there are 10 10mm bolts two on each side 3 on the right back side one on the back left side and 2 holding the wiper motor braket. Then 4 14 mm bolts that are suspension mounting bolt. Only two of the 3 on each side need to removed. At this point to should be able to remove the lower cowl/cross member. You should now have access to the hoses in the video.

Wow! How many vehicles with this system have you seen so far having this problem? Would you recommend owners bypass this feature before failure occurs? Most car owners don't check fluid levels frequently enough.

I also have a 2017 Prius Prime that was smoking so bad it looked like a coal rolling diesel only in white smoke. I knew the EGR cooler had coolant exchange, but until I started researching youtube videos to learn there was another coolant exchanger in the exhaust. What will they think of next. I ended up heading to Lowes, buying 3/8 galvanized NPT pipe, 3", 6" and a 3/8 nipple and created a U bypass and pulled the hoses off the heat exchanger under the car. I added hose clamps in addition to the factory clamps to make sure they stay on and it indeed fixed the issue. It took me about a 50 hour drive to burn off all the coolant out of the exhaust system. Next day I noticed that driving in my town that the car was noticeably not putting out the heat by a certain gas station that it normally would. I may perform this bypass to reduce the amount of fluid in those lines the engine has to heat up to temp.

I have a gen 3 Prius and I've been having cooling issues and I think this just solved the problem. In fact I'm 99% sure it did! Please promote this to gen 3 as well as newer generation Prius owners!!! My coolant wasn't leaking but has been overheating. I changed the engine and was still having the same problem even though I replaced the coolant pump, the thermostat and had it flushed. Flushed. I think this is a design flaw of monumental proportions. My question is is it going to throw any kind of code? I don't think it should and it should not have any adverse effect on the engine, in fact, it should make it awesome! Thank you!

Did my first oil change today no coolant in the oil but I did notice there was a crapload what looked like an arterial bleed around the cat lool... I remember watching that short and was like oh my God... Well I guess we know why my head gasket blew now... Gasket Masters - Muffler Tech - Please comment: My 2014 Prius with 233,000 miles is experiencing coolant leak. My car still runs good. No engine shake. I usually drive fast 75-85 mostly Texas intrastate, The check engine light randomly comes on and then goes off after a while. Code P0117 The Temp warning light comes on randomly after driving a while then goes off when I slow down. I don't see any smoke or liquid coming from the tailpipe or leaking anywhere. I do have to add coolant (about a quarter reservoir) about once a week. Yesterday I had to refill the entire reservoir with coolant after a 2-hour drive driving 80-85, Then next day drove the same 2 hours at 65 and did not lose any coolant. Took my Prius to Toyota to check it out. They said they could find no leak but, I need to replace my engine and the water pump. They did not tell me why? To me, it appears to be a leak of coolant into the catalytic converter.

I know this comment is from a year ago, and you likely already have this issue solved, but for others who made need to context, I'll answer it: From what I understand, there is a way you can bypass it down by the cat. It's a little more intensive since you actually have to by a few parts and cut the hose, but it is entirely possible.
