This is a well-done, pretty important topic that should probably be revisited again in the future. It is also long overdue, just like Android's modern app permissions system. Tricking someone is the number 1 way to "hack" them because then they do all the work. No exploits needed, besides the person. You get them to install the malicious software to own their system. Actually, the only difference between what is illegal and what CBC marketplace did was that they had terms and conditions
@ethanjohnston1338 жыл бұрын
What the marketplace didn't mention is that depending on the app even if you delete it they can still access your information.
@ethanjohnston1338 жыл бұрын
For example there are some apps that may ask to install a new profile on your phone, which allows that app to see what websites you've visited using cookies.
@competenceattractsluck69977 жыл бұрын
True. It may even have registered a new Administrator account, that can be used by other apps. So once you've had a malicious app installed, even Google Play apps may be able to access data that you never gave them permission to.
@hurasane39477 жыл бұрын
This is using droidJack remote access tool its not part of the android software development kit. It is eiher standalone or binds to an app (apk file) it uses reverse tcp as its protocol for transmitting if you delete the app there is no way it can still access your info. Cookies dont really track you if you delete them everyday.
@TheRealNaika7 жыл бұрын
Android works by using VMs for each app, only if two apps are running with the same developer certificate it then allocates 2 apps to use same VM and share info between, but if app is stand-alone it cannot interact with other apps. Permissions in apps work at installation stage, consumer should think before giving permissions to certain apps if they think app does not need it, just do not give permission. As most consumer you dont think to what they are accepting. Google Play store has a Bouncer which checks apps of-site, but of course cannot check if that app really needs all of those permissions. Apps like: Facebook, whatsapp call for all possible permissions so think twice to how they get those ads so spot on. Because they monitor your device 24/7 and put ads on what you need (search history, location etc....)
As if you can use those apps by clicking on "no" to the agreements. That guy thinks knowing and reading all the terms would've allowed him to say "no" to them and still be able to download the app.
@VIsTheMusic3 жыл бұрын
Exactly! They have it all figured out, they will get your data no matter what. As long as you continue using these so called "free" services, they're in their legal right to mine all of your data around the clock. Knowing is power.

19:52 One these apps need to be designed so when you turn off features they will stay OFF until you ether decide to turn it on permanently or temporally. Once you have uploaded or downloaded what you want on the app the settings will AUTOMATICALLY go Back to the way you set them. When it comes to using your Location before it uses you location it will ask you if you want them to use your location for any other purpose than what it is meant for in the first place. This means the app would have to disclose why and who they want to share your location with and there needs to be a way that you can say yes or no before you give any permissions. This will mean that only YOU can allow pictures or video etc to work if you want it on a on demand basis. Before any app can be downloaded or any content can be downloaded every part of that download has to give you the option to check or remove checked parts that you may or may not need off so those parts will not download. For example lets say that you download an app to open PDF's but it wants you to download a Virus protecting software. Lets say you have a virus protecting software but you already have one this will allow you to NOT have to download what you don't need. For example lets say you want to share your picture or video on Instagram you would share it but once you upload it the setting goes right back and unless you click yes to have something you use on that app to be shared with anyone other than the original purpose then the app will not be able to take that picture or location and share it with that business like that picture of that ice cream cone couldn't be shared with McDonalds or even what you write unless you Tag the person or business into that you don't want them to use. Every country needs to do this so it will force app developers to have to make shore when they design an app someone can't go through your phone remotely and turn on your mic or camera etc. There needs to be some very strong and harsh punishments if people don't follow the strict laws.

I don't use apps, log into sites using social media, take online surveys, or use a debit card. Just because someone asks you for personal information doesn't mean you have to give it to them. My massage therapist doesn't need to know my birth date, or zip code, my cashier doesn't need to know my email or phone number, and my utility company doesn't need my social security number. All were offended when I told them that they don't need that information to provide a service. Yet, all transactions went through just fine anyway. Nothing is perfect, but we don't have to make it easy for hackers.

all this started for me way back in the day, when i popped into radio shack for some batteries, cash in hand. geekboy clerk's hand poised over the cash register/computer keyboard, he said "phone number?". i said "what?" him: "i need your phone number." me: "what? no. why would you ask me that?" him, in a haughty tone: "it's routine. so, phone number?" me, annoyed laugh: "are you going to call me?" him: "no, i have to put your number in to begin the transaction." me: "are you saying i can't buy these batteries with this cash unless i give you my ~phone number~?" him, annoyed: "yes, so i need your number please." me, in disbelief: well put in ~your~ number then. i'm just trying to buy a couple batteries here." him, pizzed: "afraid i can't do that. are you going to give me your number or not?" me: "no." him: "well please put the merchandise down and leave the store then." me: "are you serious right now? get me your manager please." him, yelling across the store: "bill! need some help over here!" it kept going for a while like this with 'bill'. long story short- i had to make another stop to get those batteries somewhere else, and radio shack is no more. same thing started happening all over, in many stores. and after saying no thank you, i have been denied purchases quite a few times. friends say "just lie!" i hate to be put in a position to be forced to lie... but now i just lie, using an old land line phone number from decades ago. this is ridiculous. they should be PAYING US for our personal info.

The main problem with apps, and im referring to android only (windows and ios doesn't have this problem) is that there are tonnes of bogus apps. Note, if they ask for permissions like camera or call logs when its a horoscope app, delete the app immediately. Its malicious

What were the permissions of this Zodiac app? It must have the permission to run at startup, which means it would run in the background which would allow it to monitor your activity without having the app open, right? If the app doesn't run in the background, it would only have access to your data when you're using the app, right?

Even with smart phones be careful because safety is everything and watch TV shows that educate you on what can really happen.
@kokokorea67944 жыл бұрын
Really surprised that the majority didn't know about it. Everyone should be educated about these stuff. Don't use apps that ask you for permissions that the apps DON'T NEED. Don't support them...basically by not installing their apps.

In most places on earth these days everything is done online. What I have started doing is when applying for a job, car, rental home..anything..I demand a good ole paper application! I have not hit one snag in this process when I kindly explain WHY I feel the need to protect my personal information! Of course..I'm positive my personal info has been added to the net but I have no doubt that I have started companies wondering how "safe" the net is! It also has another huge plus..I get an immediate response to my request from..get this..A HUMAN BEING!!

Still no real solution... Sure you can disable permissions but it's becoming more and more difficult to function in society without giving up privacy! If you ever use gps map or search a local business, you're telling where you are. Everything you send on Facebook messenger or Instagram dm's, you're Zucc'd baby. Makes me wanna just become a hermit!

Facebook knows all about people who don't have accounts because it accesses everyone's contacts. It knows all about you from crossing the data it gathered from contacts with data available elsewhere. It's crazy.

I think that girl missed the point, she's angry at the wrong person as none of her data was shared on TV well except her face. The main thing is the permissions she gave to apps in her phone.
@chocofancy8 жыл бұрын
Most of the time, app will stop installing if you don't accept. Also, for some phones like Samsung S4, I don't see an option of turning some options off in Settings after the app has been installed. You pretty much have to uninstall the app to change anything, which is annoying. Everything is done to discourage people from being aware and protecting their privacy.
@nonyabizness.original5 жыл бұрын
accept, install, then go turn off all permissions. apps usually work fine without them, and if not, delete.

They did actually go into everyone's private information that's what they did not show you in the video so shut the hell up you have no idea what your talking about. You were bot there. They asked us to help them review an app, they never explained anything to anyone. They basically tricked us into the interview. They should have been sued. You have no idea what they did with the information. They showed the public that they deleted all the information they had gathered but no one knows for sure. If you dont have all the information shut the hell up
