Hello Todd, although your videos on FAA regulations serve a very small segment of the KZbin world, for guys like me they're invaluable. Just hearing an experienced DPE like you vocalize and explain the regulations has helped me better understand this dry topic. At this stage in my career in aviation, your videos have been gold! Good stuff. I like the way you explain the dry areas of flight training in an interesting way. One last thing, not really important, and it's just my opinion - I think you can find better intro music. Also, have you thought about producing some Q&A videos where pilots can ask you questions and you answer a list of them?

Ah hah! I will work on the music!! Also, I have a segment coming up with @GoldSealFlightTraining where we are doing a Q&A. That will probably take place in October.

Hi Todd! Just have a question on 61.197(2)(i). You stated that your total pass rate has to be 80%. However, the regulation states that it refers to "those students." Does this refer back to the 5 students that we have already signed off? I do not see where it references our total pass rate, just the five students. Hope that you can help! Thanks.

Hello Mr. Todd. Thank you for such wonderful information. You make regulations sound really simple. I have a small doubt. I'm confused as to why the eligibility 61.103 doesn't state that person needs to hold a valid medical? It is stated in 61.23(3) that for the practical test, we require at least a third class medical. I'm not sure why they haven't included that in here.
@ToddShellnuttCPC2 жыл бұрын
Because 61.113 states that you can use Basic Med, and the requirement for a medical is contained in 61.39. Hope this helps.

Can you please elaborate on 61.109(a) flight training oppose to 61.1099(a)(5) flight time? Thank you.
@ToddShellnuttCPC3 жыл бұрын
Sure! Flight training is with an authorized instructor onboard, and flight time is respective to the specific guidance of the regulation. In this case, it is "solo flight time". Does this help?
@jefferykearns24773 жыл бұрын
@@ToddShellnuttCPC Yes and no. I may have worded my question improperly. What I meant to ask is how I should interpret the conflicting word use (training/time), and which takes precedent over the other?
@ToddShellnuttCPC3 жыл бұрын
@@jefferykearns2477 I am still not understanding your questions. If the FAA calls for "training" then that mean it is with a CFI. Flight time is as it states. Solo time is as it states. Feel free to respond again if this still does not help you.

Hello Todd. I have a question regarding the 3 simulated instrument training hours required for ppl. Can a CFI provide this training if he/she does not have an instrument rating on his/her pilot certificate?
@ToddShellnuttCPC4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. The wording for this is located in 61.109(a)(3) where it states. "3 hours of flight training in a single-engine airplane on the control and maneuvering of an airplane solely by reference to instruments...". Now if you turn to 61.195(L), it states that as long as you hold the category and class, you can provide this training. The wording is specific in this case, " control and maneuvering an airplane solely by reference to the flight instruments".

There is no requirement for you to do math without a calculator - most pilots nowadays fly with a tablet or their phone and use those to perform any in-flight calculations. You should be fine.

Todd, do the FARs cover all the endorsements CFIs need to give or are there extra endorsements hidden in AC 61-65?
@ToddShellnuttCPC4 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. Meaning, some regulations like 61.87(b) do not state that an endorsement should be given, but it is listed in AC 61.65. You should use the AC as the main reference guide for endorsements, and then back it up with expanded regulatory guidance. Does this answer your question? Let me know.

Ok curious, why not a DPE anymore?
@ToddShellnuttCPC5 жыл бұрын
Good question, several reasons. (1) Be sure to work for a FSDO that will support you and back you up when the customer complains about failing checkrides. (2) It's not financially a good decision when you have to pay your own insurance and taxes. (3) The redundancy of repetitive wrong answers on a daily basis are extremely monotonous and (4) I wanted to really advance in my trade and felt that going to work for a very reputable flight school would assist me in doing that. I plan on going back into the DPE business in 2020, I just needed a break to ensure that I continue to give the best service I can.

@@ToddShellnuttCPC Hi Todd, I am loving the videos, I do have a question to your response above. I am currently working towards my CFI after completing my Private and Commercial Training at a Part 141 school. I am now looking at instructing full time at a Part 61 closer to where I currently live, with my end goal of getting to the airlines. I feel extremely dedicated and motivated on my current path to become a CFI though. Referencing part four of your answer above, what are some traits I should be looking for in a flight school to work at? Right now I have two options, a flight school (part 61) and a flying club. I know CFIs who work at both, both seem to enjoy their work environment. What are some things that make a flight school/club a reputable environment and what are some questions that I should ask the CFIs, owners and operators of each about the operation? Thank you for you time, dedication and information. Your content in invaluable and you are a great communicator.
@ToddShellnuttCPC5 жыл бұрын
@@cmcintyre3165 The concern with going with a smaller school is the inability to finance bigger projects that can really help a pilot/CFI like me really grow. For you, I would concentrate all of my attention on becoming a Subject Matter Expert (SME). For me, that's regulations, but I am good at other subjects as well. Don't get caught up in the building of your flight hours and lose track of the end goal. The fact that you are, where you are now, means that you have spent a lot of money to get there. How are you going to account for the financial strain and burden? LEARN YOUR TRADE! That is how. (this sounds like the start of another video series) So, what makes a flight training establishment reputable? No accidents/incidents from the staff is a good start. The condition of the equipment is another. I would be very wary of a "flight club" that has CFI's and provides flight instruction, Technically, that is illegal. The FAA defines a flying club as a nonprofit or not-for-profit entity (e.g., corporation, association, or partnership) organized for the express purpose of providing its members with aircraft for their personal use and enjoyment only. So if it has a recognizable “owner”, that’s a good sign to stay away. The owners are the flight club members. www.faa.gov/airports/resources/publications/orders/compliance_5190_6/media/5190_6b.pdf Questions to ask. Don’t ask the owner/operator anything! Statistically, they will simply tell you what they want to get you onboard. CFI’s are a hot commodity, and they will rope you in any way they can. Talk with the CFI’s, preferably away from the school. Instructors are always looking for a free meal, so treat them to lunch and pick their brains about what they like about working for ABC flight school. If the flight school is inside of an FBO, talk to the front counter person, or line personnel. They always have the juicy gossip. Hope of all of this helps. Thanks for being a great subscriber!
